Jack Johnson And Other Celebs Donate Shoes To Save American Beaches

Filed under: campaigns, donations, shopping — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 10:48 am

Having lived in Florida for the first 18 years of my life, I have a special appreciation for the glory that is an awesome beach! Therefore, I am extra pleased as punch to hear that a slew of eco-minded celebs are auctioning off their shoes for the Surfrider Foundation – an organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.

The Barefoot Wine Rescue Project is a part of eBay’s Giving Works program and will feature shoes donated by Jack Johnson, Cameron Diaz, Matthew McConaughey, Kelly Slater, Sophia Bush, Andrew Keegan and many more!

“Barefoot Wine is committed to helping make beaches ‘barefoot-friendly’ through the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project,” said Jeremy Soine of Barefoot Wines. “We’re donating 100% of the proceeds from this charity auction to support the Surfrider Foundation’s ongoing efforts to keep our world’s beaches healthy for generations to come.”

So if you just gotta, gotta, gotta own a pair of famous shoes, make sure you visit eBay before December 12th and get involved. Happy Bidding!

Razzi Snap: Kelly Preston Holds Scientology Concert Benefit

Filed under: babies and bumps, books, campaigns, donations, events, honors, music, politics, shopping — sara @ 4:44 pm

Kelly Preston held a Scientology Concert on Monday to benefit the Sussex Air Ambulance Service. Say what you will of Scientology, but the event did raise $82,000. Sussex Air Ambulance Service Chief Executive, Dave Philpott, says the money will enable them to save 50 lives.

Singer Mariah Carey has revealed that not only does she sleep a whopping 15 hours a night (IS there 15 hours in the night?), she also uses “20 humidifiers around [her] bed.” Yikes. I wonder how much water that is a night? [Editor's note: Not to mention the electricity!]

Marama Davidson, daughter of actor and New Zealand Green Party Member Rawiri Paratene (Whale Rider, Xena: Warrior Princess), painted her pregnant belly with the words “Vote for Me” in green in support of her father’s Party while doing outreach at Auckland University.

Kerri Russell was recently spotted with an organic Ergobaby Carrier when out and about with son, River. Want one for your own green tot? Click here.

The New York Public Library’s 2008 Library Lions benefit was the place to be for many celebs on Monday. Barbara Walters, Charlie Rose, and Ivanka Trump, among others, all made an appearance. The benefit honored Edward Albee, Ashley Bryan, Nora Ephron, and Salman Rushdie; and one of my all-time favorite writers, Nobel Laureate and Library Trustee, Toni Morrison, was the Master of Ceremonies.

Celebrities Design Christmas Trees To Help Keep America Beautiful

Filed under: campaigns, contests, shopping — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 12:42 pm

Is it that time of year already?! Last holiday season, after Josh Lucas purchased a fake Christmas tree, Ecorazzi posed the question: Is an “organic” fake Christmas tree better for the environment than a real Christmas tree? Overall, most people had never heard of said “organic fake tree” and argued that a real tree is not only biodegradable but grown to be chopped down, thus making the latter option far more environmentally friendly. Well, as the holidays approach, the Christmas tree is once again being foisted into the spotlight, but this time for charity.

Actors Julianne Moore, Brooke Shields, Angie Harmon, Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker have personally designed Christmas trees – with the help of Robert Verdi and Smith & Hawken — for an online auction to benefit Keep America Beautiful.

Keep America Beautiful “combines education with hands-on stewardship to make America’s communities cleaner, greener, safer, and more livable.” Matthew M. McKenna, President and CEO of Keep America Beautiful said, “This is such a great concept for a fundraiser, and with the A-list stars supporting it, Keep America Beautiful couldn’t be more thrilled to be the chosen beneficiary. The funds generated by this auction will help us in fulfilling our grassroots mission to build cleaner, greener, stronger communities nationwide.”

To participate in the auction, simply visit SmithandHawken.com/Trees between October 15 and December 5th and click on the “BID NOW” button. The auction winners will receive their special trees just in time for the holidays. Happy bidding!

Razzi Snap: Al Gore To Buy Interest In Eco Mag

Filed under: donations, events, fashion, green and famous, magazines, shopping, sports — sara @ 9:15 am

flowerAfter gracing this month’s cover, Al Gore is buying stock in the environmental magazine Plenty. Founder Mark Spellun says there’s a deal going on, but Gore isn’t buying the company.

flowerNaomi Campbell may be known as a bad-tempered diva, but she’s also been known to have her better moments. One example might be her third annual Fashion for Relief Charity Show on Wednesday. Part of London Fashion Week, the event was co-created with the Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown, and benefited the White Ribbon Alliance, a charity that saves the lives of pregnant women and babies in developing countries. It seems to have been quite successful, with Katherine Jenkins‘ dress raising £1,000 and Cameron Diaz’s boyfriend, Paul Sculfor, auctioning a date with himself for £1,500.

flowerBeyonce, Jay-Z, Jimmy Fallon, Julianne Moore, Patti LaBelle, and “Gossip Girl” stars Blake Lively and Taylor Momsen attended the 9th annual New Yorkers for Children Fall Gala on Tuesday. The event benefited youth foster care in New York.

flowerNick Jonas was spotted in LA on Wednesday puppy-lovin’–and using plastic. Nick, Target’s got some nifty reusable bags that are almost as cute as your new Golden Retriever buddy! Try one out.

flowerRemember when we told you about Tim Robbins playing hockey for charity? He showed up at the Right to Play event with a t-shirt sporting the phrase “Hockey Dads for Obama.” He also gave all the other parents a shirt, and said, ““Palin does not speak for all of the hockey parents out there. I’m sure that there are a lot of Hockey Single Moms for Obama out there. I also believe that the ultimate hockey god, Don Cherry, is for Obama, too.”

Razzi Snap: Matthew McConaughey Runs Again

Filed under: donations, events, fashion, green and famous, healthy living, shopping — sara @ 9:12 am

flowersDidn’t Hollywood hottie Matthew McConaughey just finish the Nike + Human Race? He was ripped as ever in preparation for yesterday’s 2008 Nautica Malibu Triathalon, which benefited the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

flowersBrittany Spears is auctioning off her naked self–her naked self-portrait, that is. The painting, which the singer has also autographed, is being sold on eBay to raise funds for L.A.’s the Promises Foundation, which provides women and children with low-income with behavioral health services. Wait. Behavioral health services? Now there’s the ironic moment of the day. To bid, click here.

flowersThough the lawsuit hasn’t been settled (or dismissed) yet, Kate Hudson is still promoting her new hair-care line, David Babaii for WildAid. Not only is the actress actually using herself to test the products (Go Kate!), she’s also filming ads out in the bush with WildAid workers. “There was a black rhino right in front of our hut. It is one of the top on the endangered species list. It was so sad. It was all alone,” she said.

flowersWhile the Atkins meat frenzy hasn’t completely left the planet yet, there are plenty of celebs who use veggie means when they’re dieting. Joan Lunden digs fresh fruit, Kelly Preston chows on oatmeal and bagels, Claudia Schiffer munches on salad and steamed vegetables, and Heidi Klum uses a salad with vinegar as an appetizer going out to restrain her appetite.

flowersMolly Sims and Jennifer Jason Leigh are fans of Vert, L.A.’s first eco beauty boutique. Vert’s products are all chemical-free, mostly organic, and the store even holds makeup seminars and workshops to help customers lead more eco-friendly lifestyles.

Sheryl Crow Designs An Environmentally Friendly ‘Better Bag’ For Whole Foods

Filed under: green and famous, products, shopping — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 1:12 pm

sheryl crow whole foods bag

A quick tip: the fastest way to get eye-rolls and groans from your fellow grocery shoppers is to stand in line with a cart full of food and no reusable bag in site. In fact, if I perchance think a fellow line dweller is cute and I see her opting for the world-killing plastic alternative, she will lose an immediate 3… possibly 4 points on the dreamy scale. And I think it’s safe to say that Sheryl Crow feels the same way.

Crow has teamed up with Whole Foods and designed A Better Bag – a signature reusable bag created in support of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) Simple Steps program. The tote features a charcoal sketch of a tree with words written by Crow and is made from 80 percent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles with each bag representing approximately four 20-ounce plastic bottles.

Sheryl has been an environmental advocate for years and says: “I am a big believer in doing what you can, even if it’s something as small as reducing the amount of plastic we each use daily that ends up in landfills, whether it is plastic bags, water bottles or product packaging. I’m so happy to be working with Whole Foods Market on this project.”

So head on down to your local Whole Foods, grab a vegan muffin and get yourself a Sheryl Crow designed reusable bag. Because saving the planet is just frigin sexy!

[Update: The bag will be available October 15th]
