Mac Danzig is proving that plant-power is the real deal in a hot new UFC Undisputed game that we think it pretty effing rad!

Danzig has rocked the vegan diet for years and previously told MensFitness.com:

“I just got to the point where I wanted to minimize my intake of animal products. I knew about factory farming and the theories that meat wasn’t safe.”

HSUS President Wayne Pacelle Reveals Plans To Work With Michael Vick

Filed under: animals, sports — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 2:00 pm

Falcons Vick Arraignment Football

I think it’s safe to say that here on the Razz we’ve been quite thorough with our coverage of both the HSUS and the Michael Vick dogfighting case. Therefore, I am not at all surprised to hear that the animal advocacy organization has agreed to let Vick join their thriving dogfighting campaign.

According to HSUS President Wayne Pacelle:

“I sat with the man, but I still don’t know what’s in his heart. He told me he did terrible things to dogs. He said he grew up with dogfighting as a boy, and that he never sufficiently questioned it as he grew into manhood.

He said this experience has been a trauma and he’s changed forever. And he said he wants to show the American public that he is committed to helping combat this problem. He asked for an opportunity to help. I want to give him that opportunity.”

Personally, I believe that now Michael Vick has served his sentence he should be given a fair opportunity to prove his rehabilitation. Freedom lies in education and I’m optimistic that he has the potential to reach the millions who still condone this thoughtless abuse. In short: I’m excited to hear this news.

What do YOU think? Are you happy to see this partnership or are you still weary of Vick’s motives? Chime in and share your thoughts.

NHL star Georges Laraque of the Montreal Canadiens is proving once again that green protein is all you need.

Standing six-foot three and weighing 260 lbs, Laraque is one of Canada’s most famous hockey players. Oh yeah…and he’s also a HUGE animal lover and proud vegetarian!!

Georges recently took to his official site to discuss his first fur protest: Laraque writes:

“On May 3, 2009, I was present at an anti-fur conference protest in downtown Montreal. I want to personally thank everyone who gave me the chance to be part of this event and I will make it my mission for the rest of my life to do everything I can to protect animals. I’m also proud to announce that I have officially become a vegetarian and will slowly work towards becoming totally vegan.”

What made Georges give up the cruel stuff? One word: Earthings.

Yes, sir!  One of Ecorazzi’s favorite documentaries convinced the big guy to put down the meat. To learn more about this great film, check our exclusive interview with Earthlings creator Shaun Monson

Welcome to the club, Georges!

thanks to Gary from Evolotus PR for the tip!

Charity Beat: Salma Hayek Donates Breastmilk

Also: Timberlake Tees Up, And Aussie Stars Raise Cash For Fire Victims

Filed under: campaigns, donations, sports — Michael Andre d'Estries @ 2:05 pm

hayek_breastThis one has been well-covered all around the interwebs, but we wanted to throw a personal shout-out to Salma Hayek for her charity in providing food for a needy child. While on a charity mission in Sierra Leone, the actress came across a fellow mother unable to provide milk for her malnourished five-month-old son, so she breast-fed the tot herself. “The baby was perfectly healthy, but the mother didn’t have milk,” said Hayek, who is a recent mom. “He was very hungry. I was weaning my daughter Valentina, but I still had a lot of milk that I was pumping, so I breast-fed the baby. When he felt the nourishment, he immediately stopped crying.” You rock, Salma. A myriad of celebrities — including Justin Timberlake, Bill Murray, Huey Lewis, Michael Bolton, and Kevin James — participated in the 3M Celebrity Golf Challenge yesterday. About $29,000 in charity cash was up for grabs to the winner — which ultimately went to Bolton and James on the last putt. True to his Caddyshack character, Bill Murray won over of the crowd with some hilarious quotes. Check out the jump for video and more. [Read more...]

Celebrity Driver Leilani Munter Wants NASCAR To Go Green

Filed under: sports — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 2:06 pm

_leilani-munter-photo-2As a born and bred Floridian, I understand that for many people NASCAR is a deeply holy activity, second only perhaps to football or all-you-can-eat buffets.

When you think about NASCAR and other driving related sporting activities, the first words that pop into your head probably aren’t: eco, green or environment. But celebrity driver Leilani Munter wants to change all of that.

Munter describes herslef as a “carbon-free girl”, and a “vegetarian hippie chick race car driver,” and has started the Eco Dream Team — a green program that encourages NASCAR fans to become more environmentally-aware about their lifestyle and how it effects the world around them.

As previously stated, Leilani is a proud vegetarian and when you consider the fact that the meat-industry contributes more towards global warming than every mode of transportation combined, one could argue that she is technically more of an environmentalist than her bicylce-riding meat-eating counterpart.

What do you think? Can Leilani help NASCAR go green? Chime in and share your thoughts!

Super Bowl XLIII Goes Green With Energy-Saving Initiatives

Filed under: sports — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 10:38 am

sblogo

I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud to a born and bread Tampanian than right now!

Organizers for this year’s Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida (go, Tampa) have offset the big game’s eco-footprint with a massive treeplanting effort and the purchase of renewable energy credits to fuel the bright lights, TV cameras, and jumbotrons.

Apparently the massive amounts of energy needed for the event will come from a mixture of solar and biomass power generated by local renewables company TECO. As a result, TECO spokesman Rick Morera estimates that the carbon savings will be roughly equivalent to “pulling 20 cars off the road for a year.”

They’ve also redesigned their banners to use less material and will either reuse them next year or upcycle them into tote bags and wallets.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget that eating one pound of beef has the environmental equivalent of driving more than 40 miles in an SUV! So do your part for Mama Earth by switching to veggie-burgers at this year’s tailgating party, and make this Super Bowl the greenest one yet!

Olympic Track Star Usain Bolt Starts Charity Fashion Line With Green Fabrics

Filed under: donations, fashion, sports — dana @ 11:45 am

bolt_clothingThe Jamaican sprinter and Olympic sensation, Usain Bolt, has launched a fashion line in partnership with Sun Island Jamaica Limited. Bolt’s line will help support charities that better the island nation of Jamaica, including the Jamaica United Way to which he recently donated $100,000. The actual clothes will be divided into three lines to target different markets: a souvenir line, an Urban Line, and a line of Signature Polo shirts featuring the “To the World” pose he became known for at the Beijing Olympics.

“We felt that aligning ourselves with Sun Island, we could reach out to charities which would have a significant impact on society,” Norma Peart, Blot’s longtime manager, told the Jamaica Observer.

The line will be available in men’s and women’s styles in Europe, Asia and the Pacific. In addition to the charities it will support, Bolt’s European line will also feature organic cotton fabrics and be printed with environmentally friendly inks using state-of-the-art digital direct technology.

“We are just trying to help to better Jamaica,” Bolt said.

Barry Bonds Brags About Killing Buck

Filed under: sports — stephanie @ 2:10 pm

Instead of knocking baseballs out of the park, disgraced former sports icon Barry Bonds is now in the woods with a high-powered hunting rifle, killing Bambi’s mom.  Bonds has a new job as spokesman for Christensen Arms, and in a seven-minute infomercial for the company, he brags about taking down these poor defenseless creatures in a single shot.

His written endorsement of the hunting rifles on the Christensen Arms website reads, “With this super wide whitetail closing in, the only thing I had to worry about was putting the crosshairs on the front shoulder, and the rifle would do the rest. One blast is all it took and I left Canada with an amazing whitetail that scored 193.”

So, Barry went from a former baseball hero indicted for lying about steroid use to a gun-toting buffoon who kills animals for fun. Way to rescue your reputation, there.
