Sunday Clip: The Honeybee Mystery

Filed under: video — michael @ 12:03 pm

Seeing people dress up like honeybees and walk the streets of New York City never fails to amuse me. But then again, I’m also attracted to shiny objects. Any any movie starring Rade Serbedzija

Harrison Ford Ponders: Is Indiana Jones An Eco-Friendly Guy?

Filed under: green and famous, interviews, video, web — michael @ 5:20 pm

harrison ford

The folks over at BigThink recently conducted an interview with Harrison Ford about his work at Harvard scientist E.O. Wilson’s Biodiversity Foundation. The organization works to preserve biological diversity in the living environment through innovative business and educational strategies.

There are a great range of questions here, with everything from “Is Indiana Jones an environmentalist hero?” to “How has your love of nature influenced your acting?”. Here’s his response to the latter:

“I think the basis of acting is empathy. Knowing how other people feel. Certainly, one of the important judgments you can make about a person is how they fit into their environment, into the world that they live in. Specifically, whether they’re a positive force or a negative force.”

“I’ve always loved the quiet and the solace of nature. I’ve been fascinated by the complication of nature. In a way, I found that although I was raised without a formal religion, I found an ethical reality in nature — and the preservation of it. And I think that informs me in every way.”

One of the best aspects of these videos is how raw and thoughtful Ford’s answers are. There isn’t any interviewer — just Harrison and a camera. Check out the answer to the Indiana Jones question after the jump. For the rest of the great interview segments, check out the BigThink site here.

Missy Higgins, William Shatner Back Sierra Club’s 2% Initiative

Filed under: campaigns, video, web — michael @ 3:18 pm

As part of Sierra Club 2% Campaign — which seeks an 80 percent cut in carbon emissions by 2050, or 2 percent a year — celebrities such as singer Missy Higgins and actor William Shatner have produced PSAs urging action.

In the piece, Missy points out that “scientists say we need to make a big change in the amount of carbon that comes from our cars, our homes and our businesses.” Missy reminds us that being a part of the solution to global warming is everyone’s responsibility - governments, families, businesses - and that we need to cut our carbon emissions 80% by 2050. But she also says that we don’t need to do this all at once and that every little bit helps. If we can cut our carbon emissions by an average of 2% per year, we can stop some of the most damaging effects of global warming.

Billy Crystal And David Letterman Spoof The WE Campaign

Filed under: video, web — michael @ 9:32 am

The WE Campaign has produced several television ads featuring notables such as the Reverend Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson putting aside their differences and coming together to fight climate change. Like everything else that’s fair game in the world of PSAs, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to spoof the concept.

Enter Billy Crystal and David Letterman sitting on a beach and discussing their differences. Let’s just say that it doesn’t end up working out in the end — especially when it comes to paying for sex.
