Superman Gets Educated On Giant Floating Sunlight Reflectors

The paparazzi over at TMZ were following former Superman Dean Cain (of the series Lois and Clark), when an eco-activist took advantage of the attention to lobby a bizarre scheme for saving the planet.

Of course, for all I know, dragging giant plastic reflectors out into the middle of the ocean to decrease the amount of sunlight hitting the planet might be just what we need (along with 13 crystal skulls). But I’m going to go with Dean Caine on this one and say that the idea sounds “Far-fetched”. Hey, kudos to the guy for even listening.

Glenn Close Receives Golden Bone For Work With Dogs

Paris has too many. DMX might have been too cruel. Michael Vick…well we all know how that story ended. Aren’t there any celebrities out there treatin’ Snoopy right? Enter Glenn Close. 

Glenn Close recently received a “Golden Bone” from LookToTheStars.org for her role as co-founder of Fetchdog.com — an online store that offers high-end canine supplies while raising money for charity. Each time you purchase an item through Fetchdog.com a percentage of the total will be donated to a select dog charity of your choice. Some doggy-options are: Little Angels Pug Rescue, Animal Rescue New Orleans,the ASPCA and many more. 

The site is also home to Glenn’s blog and a section called Lively Licks where Glenn interviews celebs like Mary Steenburgen, Ted Danson, Dan Zelman and Debra Messing about all things canine. “Our dogs love us and keep us laughing through good times and bad,” writes Close on her blog, “This blog is a tribute to all the fabulous dogs who trot and wag their way through our lives and to the people who they have so successfully trained.”

Close has several dogs herself and is known for bringing her “kids” to the set while shooting. Now I know some of you might be wondering if Glenn got her dogs from rescue shelters, so I did a little digging (no pun intended).  I couldn’t get word if any of her CURRENT dogs are from shelters, but she has a solid record of owning rescued dogs and she certainly supports some great rescue shelters!

So a big high five, Glenn, from me to you. Thanks for setting the example and doing them doggies right!

Pierce Brosnan Offers Tips On How You Can Go Green

Oh Pierce Brosnan, how you make my inner 50-year-old, post-menopausal, environmentalist woman swoon!

Recently, the James Bond star wrote a letter on his website praising some great environmental organizations and giving his readers a few self-practiced tips on ways they might transition into a more greener way of life.  Some of Pierce’s hints include: supporting local and organic food, using eco-friendly cleaning products around the house, compost, compost, compost and encouraging environmental education.

Pierce is no stranger to green living, having  donated over $1 million buckaroos to environmental organizations throughout the years.  In fact, Pierce was even eco-friendly before it was “cool” and was given an Environmental Leadership Award from the Green Cross organization in 1997.

Jessica Biel Starts Social Network For Good

Just like MySpace, but without all the pervs

Jessica Biel has hooked up with her father Jon to start a new social website called Make The Difference Network. The organizers hope to connect nonprofit organizations with caring individuals and businesses — and already over 150 orgs have signed on to be involved. From the press release,

“MTDN increases the visibility of nonprofit organizations by empowering potential donors to search, select and fund these organizations’ specific “Wishes” and then see the results of their giving. Nonprofits can join MTDN for free and they get to keep 100 percent of all donations collected through MTDN.”

Each registered organization receives a “powerful, eye-catching multi-media profile including pictures, videos and blogs.” Jessica Biel is thrilled that the site is finally ready, citing inspiration for the idea from a fan that suffered from muscular dystrophy. In her own words,

“I co-founded Make the Difference with my father after an experience I had meeting a 23- year-old fan who spent over 15 years in a wheelchair due to the devastating effects of muscular dystrophy. Timmy and his family never ceased to amaze me with their courage and fortitude in the face of this fatal condition. As a way to help, I highlighted this family on my professional website, provided a little support for them, and encouraged others to help, if they could. Timmy has since passed away, but knowing him and his family had a profound effect on me and helped me realize I really could make a difference in the world. I will be forever grateful that I knew Timmy – he is the inspiration behind Make the Difference Network!”

Celebrity Teens Go Green! Kewl Magazine’s Eco Issue Is GR8.

As a mid-twenty, non-parent, only child dude, I am happy to say that I’m totally tweenless. That is, on an average day I have about zero exposure to anything intended for people under the age of about 18. So you’ll excuse me if I step out of my comfort zone and cover something a little more…tweeny.

KEWL Magazine, a magazine considered to be the Entertainment Weekly for kids, is showing youngsters that protecting the planet from global warming can be…well kewl. Expanding on its regular Go Green feature, KEWL celebrated Earth Day with an jam packed green issue, including teen celebrity ‘green’ pledges, information on endangered sites and endangered animals, and tons of information on how your favorite kind-of-awkward, semi-moody tween can get involved.

The issue also featured the Top Ten Green Celebs including Hayden Panettiere, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Bindi Irwin, and more. Also, celebrity posters place top celebs in front of world destinations threatened by global warming. Along with the celebs, over twenty earth-friendly companies donated products as prize give-a-ways in the magazine, including necklaces made of recycled precious metals, re-usable gift bags, and solar cell phone chargers.

First Eco Browser That Benefits The Planet Now Available

Taking a break from our regularly scheduled green gossip, we wanted to tell you about a new web browser — from the creators of Netscape — that actually benefits the planet through web surfing. The original version, called Flock, has been around for a bit and is based on Mozilla Firefox with a Yahoo search engine. Basically, what makes this browser so cool is that it takes all of your social networking sites and organizes them under one roof. The new green-themed option, aptly named Flock Eco, comes preloaded with the top green content on the web — with 10% of proceeds going to an eco-charity of the user’s choice. From the release,

Danny Devito Asks Who Your Eco-Hero Is — Besides Ed Begley Jr.

Continuing their efforts to get people talking about the environment, Current TV has added some more videos featuring famous folk. The one we like most is from actor Danny Devito — who as in past eco-PSAs (check out this one on his electric vehicle) — is always amusing.
