Try gifting from http://www.etsy.com. Search the gift guide under the heading
"environmentally friendly" or type "recycled" or "upcycled" in the search box. A number of artists are transforming what would have been waste into fun art and functional items. A great place to shop this holiday.

Stephanie, the idea behind the Gift List has several aspects:

1) IF people are going to buy, we want to buy green.

2) There are a lot of product companies out there pushing the green envelope and we want to champion them. It's better than buying plastic junk made in China. We hope they will inspire the giants to make a change for the greener.

3) As we mention in the Charity section of our Gift List, donations are certainly the greenest gift of them all...most of us don't need more STUFF.

4) Some of these products actually help you consume LESS. For instance, if you are a Pellegrino drinker and decide to switch over to the Soda Club, you'll be using significantly less resources and energy. If you buy your kid a Sigg bottle, less waste there (down with the juice box!). And if you buy someone a gift of a cool, compact reusable bag that they'll actually use, then maybe you've just converted someone over to byo bagging it at the grocery. Even the eco-clothes or accessories, which you could certainly argue are not necessary (you could by only used clothing)...perhaps they inspire others to make their own daily lifes greener just by being exposed to a concept that "spoke to them".

I certainly get the fact that the Gift List lends itself to consumerism...but I think many people are going to be buying anyway. So let's inspire them to buy green. Those are my two cents. Thanks for your comment...I would love to hear from others!

It's a great idea -- but is it practical? Do you think we should just stop promoting eco-friendly Christmas gifts and hope that people stop buying and instead donate? Unless you live in More's Utopia, you should understand that isn't going to happen. The best we can do is try to promote both aspects.

What's so green about holiday consumerism? So what if the item is recycled? I have a better idea for a holiday gift: Don't buy trendy eco-junk! Buy a plant or tree or donate some money to charity instead.
