Tim Robbins to Play Hockey for Charity This September

Filed under: donations, events, sports — sara @ 5:29 pm

On September 5, we’ll get to see activist actor Tim Robbins take to the ice for a great cause.  Along with fellow celebs Alan Thicke, D.B. Sweeney, Cameron Bancroft and Jason Reitman, Robbins will be playing in the inaugural Festival Cup charity hockey game to benefit Right to Play, an organization that works to help children in disadvantaged parts of the world get a chance to play sports.

NHL stars Joe Thornton, Jason Spezza, Curtis Joseph, Matt Stajan, Robyn Regehr, Mike Cammalleri, Sean Avery and Andrew Ference will also be playing at the event.

“I believe in the positive power of sport and play for children. In addition to keeping kids out of trouble and engaging them in a constructive activity, sports teach children many lessons and values including teamwork and determination. The Festival Cup is a great opportunity to help support the important initiatives of Right To Play,” says Wayne Gretzky, Right To Play’s Canadian Advisory Board Honorary Chair. What better way to raise money for gross motor development through sports than by playing a sport?

This also isn’t Robbins’ first time playing hockey for a cause. He’s played in the Heroes of Hockey game, among others. He once told Charlie Rose, “I like hockey. I like crunching people into boards and stuff, but it’s legal. I mean, on one’s going to die, you know. It’s a good, healthy way to get rid of that thing that’s in all of us, this violence, you know. We’ve got it in us.” Sports are better than, say, war or genocide then? Yeah, I’ll agree with that.

Alan Thicke Scores An All-Electric BMW Mini-Cooper, Promotes Tech

Score one for the Seaver family!

Joining musician James Blunt in cruising the streets with an all-electric Mini Cooper is Growing Pains star Alan Thicke. The Emmy and Golden Globe nominee is becoming the new spokesperson for Hybrid Technologies — a firm that develops and markets lithium-powered products worldwide. They’re also responsible for commercializing the process that guts the mini of its conventional engine in favor of the electric kind (which at last read, will set you back a cool $60K). Said Thicke of the relationship,

“As a Baby Boomer Consumer, I’ve been part of the problem so now it’s time to be part of the solution. Hybrid Technologies allows me to cut back on emissions and eliminate fuel costs without sacrificing luxury or performance. I’ve set many examples for my kids – pro and con – but this is definitely one of the better ones. I feel like a smart guy in a smart car!”

Ah, the power of celebrity endorsement. Enjoy the free wheels and zero trips to the pump, Alan!
