NBA Superstar, All-Star, and Olympic Athlete Amaré Stoudemire of the Phoenix Suns recently traveled to the country of Sierra Leone where he funded and helped build water wells to provide fresh and clean water to several impoverished villages throughout the country. Amaré also met with several heads of state, including the President and Vice President of Sierra Leone, to discuss his efforts and also his future plans to build a “green” Academy that would promote sports and education in the country.

“This is a trip that I had been looking forward to taking my whole life,” he said of the experience. “We had already begun to help the communities in Sierra Leone, and it was great to see the efforts in person. One water well built provides water for 450 people, so as you can see, the impact is huge.”

Amaré is looking to use product and resources indigenous to the region and is in discussions right now with architects about building his Academy in Sierra Leone. What’s even more impressive is that Amaré Stoudemire did all of this on his own accord, as this was not an NBA sanctioned project; rather, a man who saw a need and realized their was something he could do about.

Nice work, Amaré. Look for opportunities to get involved with his “Each One Teach One Foundation” soon. The new website will launch in December, but you can sign up for more information now.
