Filed under: fashion, film-tv, television — michael @ 12:27 pm

flowerMan, what’s happening with the big stores lately? They’re doing a pretty decent job with bringing on some major designers. The latest drop is that Anya Hindmarch will be creating some bags for Target. While Anya’s no Stella when it comes to sustainable or animal-free creations — she has been known to rock the green world every now and again. Here’s to hoping it happens — and is affordable! Another interesting trend are famous folk offering retreats to those celebs in need. Last month, it was Mel Gibson giving Britney Spears some time at his ranch in Costa Rica. This time, Johnny Depp has offered Lindsay Lohan free use of his island in the Caribbean. The location, appropriately called “F**k Off Island”, is a perfect, secluded, paradise — something Depp believes Lohan could use for a break. [Read More...]

Rocker Bruce Springsteen offered Discovery Exec David Zaslav some brand-building advice for the network while over dinner recently. The boss apparently told Zaslav that he needs to “make people fall in love” — much in the way that the Planet Earth series made people love the planet more. He said that’s exactly what he tries to do with every song he creates. Hey, if it works for him, lets hope Planet Green gets people swooning. [Read More...]

Stella McCartney Nabs Designer Of The Year Award

Upsets Anya Hindmarch for the win!

Filed under: fashion, honors — michael @ 3:00 pm

x66157053597360167_4.jpgBefore we began highlighting the myriad of green fashion trends and brands featured on ‘razzi, there was Stella McCartney. Amidst an industry famous for its use of animal skins and furs, she stood tall as an example of sustainable clothing design — ahead of her time, like most green forays, until a sweeping interest and focus on “healthy fashion” suddenly came in vogue this past year. On Tuesday night at the British Fashion Awards, Ms. McCartney was named the 2007 Designer of the Year in recognition of her achievements. We could not be prouder.

Of course, that’s not to say that McCartney stood alone in the green fashion scene this year. How could any of us forget the chaos created by Anya Hindmarch and her “I’m Not A Plastic Bag” tote that took the world by storm? For her part, Hindmarch was recognized with the Designer Brand award.

It’s obvious that sustainable fashion has found an audience; but it will remain niche at best until the big players follow the leads of designers like McCartney in modifying their practices. 2007 was an incredible year for moving the industry in the right direction and we can only hope that 2008 will cover even greater distances. Congrats Stella!

[Ed Note: I think I received larger awards for 8th place in Little League! But kudos to BFA for not wasting resources on something grander!]
