The stars came out yesterday for the New York city premiere of the dolphin documentary The Cove, starring Hayden Panettiere and Isabel Lucas. In attendance were Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, and Adrian Grenier — who made the gossip fly by accompanying former flame Lucas.

The movie is a heart-wrenching affair and documents the more than 23,000 dolphins killed in one little cove in Taigi, Japan, each year. Back in November of 2007, Panettiere and Lucas joined several other activists in paddling out to the cove in an attempt to stop the slaughter of a pod of dolphins. Japanese fisherman cut off the group and they were forced to return to the shore due to escalating violence. (You can see some harsh video of the confrontation here.)

After the premiere, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., actor Fischer Stevens, Netscape founder Jim Clark and Mr. O’ Barry sat in front of the audience to take questions. According to the New York Observer, Kennedy told the group, “All people have to do is see this, and it’s going to change because it’s so outrageous what is happening there. They’re destroying public health, they’re destroying 23,000 dolphins a year, they’re slaughtering them in the most inhuman, awful way, they’re subverting democracy, they’re corrupting democratic institutions across the world.”

The Cove will hit theaters on July 31st in New York City and Los Angeles. Hit the jump below to view the trailer.

On last night’s The Office, Scranton-branch Manager Michael Scott offered to donate money to a charity that Dwight Schrute doesn’t like as compensation for a failed safety exercise. Dwight softly muttered “PETA” as his charity of choice. I guess Dwight’s displeasure with bears – or basically anything with fur – is probably enough of a reason for him to have a beef with the animal rights organization. Michelle Obama’s preferred fashion designer, Jason Wu, has certainly risen to fame quickly for his gowns for the First Lady. So what can we expect from him in the future? Fur. Ugh. “I’m doing a significant fur collection, and the message will be all about luxury,” he revealed to The Daily. “Fashion is also sort of escapism, and women need beautiful dresses to lose themselves in.” I won’t disagree on making beautiful dresses — but why ruin such a high-profile rise to stardom with a line of fur clothing? Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi – who got married last August – threw a star-studded joint birthday party at their Beverly Hills house on Saturday. Even though the two aren’t the same age (Ellen is 51 and Portia is 36), their bdays are only a few days apart. Of course, as expected, guests were treated to a lavish all-vegan meal — as well as tunes spun by DJ Samantha Ronson. In attendance were Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette, Drew Barrymore, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Stiller.

We’ve covered several environmental disaster films here on the Razz — but nothing may be as hilariously frightening as what Tugg Speedman is up against in Scorcher VI.

Tuggman, the action moviestar played by Ben Stiller in the upcoming flick, Tropic Thunder, has his own presence on the web. Head on over to his official website and you’ll feel right at home — especially if you’re a fan of Tom Cruise. Notice the similarities?

Anyways, Tuggman’s filmography lists several very funny films — but the one that caught my eye was the site for a film called Scorcher VI. All the bells and whistles usually associated with a real movie are here — even the absurdity of the film’s synopsis isn’t a far cry from some of the more humorous big-budget action flicks we’ve all seen. Here’s a brief highlight:

“In 1994, audiences held their breath when for the first time in history, the earth’s rotation came to a halt, leaving all of North America on the hot side of the globe. In three short days, the United States became a desert, and in one week, the sun had scorched over one half of the earth completely. The entire might of the US military, and even that of President Jill Remis couldn’t solve the problem.

Lucky for them, construction worker, divorced father, and ex-navy seal Jag Leugerman got the planet spinning again. Pretty rad, right? Problem is, mother earth picked up a habit she just can’t kick. Now she seems to stop spinning every two or three years. No one knows how or why, and it just keeps getting worse. Fortunately, America knows just who to call when it does happen.

I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t see this film? Apparently, the sixth film in the series deals with the apocalyptic cold side of the planet adding, “and this time you better bring a sweater. Because this time, it’s different.”

There’s a hilarious bit of online viral marketing going on for Ben Stiller’s new movie Tropic Thunder, in which he plays superstar Tug Speedman (an obvious play on Tom Cruise). Take for instance this site for the Panda Relocation Foundation — which features Speedman posing for a mock-PSA. Then there’s this funny blurb from within, “Though reports show that the numbers of wild Pandas are on the rise, the World Conservation Association (PANDA) believes there is not enough certainty to remove Pandas from the endangered animal list.”

Nice acronym.
