It’s a fair assessment that Bindi Irwin is potentially the most driving force in the field of eco-friendly fashion for kids. She’s basically a 10-year-old version of Stella McCartney — but with an even greater commitment to donating proceeds from the sale of her line to the environment.

Did we mention she’s only 10-years-old? I could barely match my socks at that age.

Launching today internationally is Irwin’s new RENEW ‘restore the planet’ line — which is made entirely from second-generation cotton. Huh? No organic cotton? Well, according to the press release, it’s even better than organic because it results in less pollution, chemicals and requires less energy and water as opposed to the heavy global footprint of conventionally-grown cotton. Bindi says of the new range, “I am always talking about re-using and replanting to renew the earth so this is a great way to get my message out. I am so excited about the range!!” The main slogans featured in the range – “Restore the planet” and “Reduce your ecological footprint” – are combined with Bindi Wear International’s own version of the well known recycle logo, replacing arrows with croc feet.

A portion of the proceeds will directly support Australia Zoo’s wildlife conservation programs. In the US, you can pick up your own RENEW goods at Zappos — which expects to have the clothing in shortly. More info is available at the official site.

Side note: If Bindi pulled that snake trick on me, I’d still be in therapy.

The Park operates as a rescue, rehab, and breeding facility for indigenous animals. Terri Irwin previously donated $20,000 to the program, with the money coming from a dress she auctioned off — which she had originally paid $91 for. Terri also mentioned further financial support will be coming from the Australia Zoo, especially for research. Visit the Natureworld website to read about the devils’ struggle with a facial cancer that has wiped out 60% of their population!!

Bindi is 10 now and little Bob, 4, is a mini-me of his daddy, the late great Steve Irwin.

“Mrs Irwin said Bindi and Bob were ‘expert tree planters’ and they were all excited to help the program.’We are seeing things in South Australia like drought and water levels dropping and the need for preservation and trees are directly linked with that,’ she said. ‘You don’t need a lot of time or money to do this kind of initiative.’

A new DVD commemorating the life of Steve Irwin titled Crikey, What An Adventure! will be released next month. The documentary features personal stories from Steve’s family and never-before-seen interviews and backstories on the famous Crocodile Hunter. More details here.

As a mid-twenty, non-parent, only child dude, I am happy to say that I’m totally tweenless. That is, on an average day I have about zero exposure to anything intended for people under the age of about 18. So you’ll excuse me if I step out of my comfort zone and cover something a little more…tweeny.

KEWL Magazine, a magazine considered to be the Entertainment Weekly for kids, is showing youngsters that protecting the planet from global warming can be…well kewl. Expanding on its regular Go Green feature, KEWL celebrated Earth Day with an jam packed green issue, including teen celebrity ‘green’ pledges, information on endangered sites and endangered animals, and tons of information on how your favorite kind-of-awkward, semi-moody tween can get involved.

The issue also featured the Top Ten Green Celebs including Hayden Panettiere, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Bindi Irwin, and more. Also, celebrity posters place top celebs in front of world destinations threatened by global warming. Along with the celebs, over twenty earth-friendly companies donated products as prize give-a-ways in the magazine, including necklaces made of recycled precious metals, re-usable gift bags, and solar cell phone chargers.

So grab that eye-rolling, five-foot-something bundle of joy in your life and go pick up Kewl Magazine’s new green issue or visit their website. GO BAYSIDE! (That’s a little something from my tween years.)

Yesterday in Sydney, Australia, Bindi Irwin — daughter of the late Steve Irwin — became the fashion world’s youngest designer by unveiling her Bindi Wear International clothing line. As we’ve mentioned before, the more than 100 different items in the collection will all have some measure of green — with 100% of the profits going towards various conservation efforts. Not only will the clothes carry environmental messages like “Tigers should be loved, not rugs” and “Extinct Stinks!” but where possible, they will also contain recycled materials.

Bindi is also looking ahead — with plans to run for Prime Minister of Australia or President of the United States already on the table. “In America they are looking for the next president and I’ve listened to everybody and, nothing against them, but they are talking about jobs, houses, developments, money, money and more money and there is nothing about conservation,” she said. “I haven’t heard anything about that. We really do need to start doing something – we can’t eat money in the long run.”

Bindi also got heavy on the subject of whaling — something her father was adamantly against. Last year, the Sea Shepherd Society honored his memory by dedicating an anti-whaling boat in his name. Said Bindi, “It’s awful what’s happened – it’s become war. It’s bullets now.”

Oh, by the way, she’s only 9-years-old and her environmental policies are already years ahead of the Bush Administration. Which, frankly, is not surprising.

For a slide show of her fashion debut, jump here.
