Calista Flockhart Hosts The 37th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner

We polled 100 random people and found that 98.5 percent of them prefer peace over violence. Okay, we didn’t REALLY pole 100 people, but I’m guessing – just guessing here—that if we DID poll a hundred people at least 98.5 percent of them WOULD have voted that way. Especially if Calista Flockhart was one of the voters!

You see, Calista Flockhart is set to host the 37th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner benefiting Peace Over Violence on Friday November 7th. It’s no surprise that Flockhart is hosting, as she’s the National Spokesperson for the organization that recognizes people who work to build a world of healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence.

The event will include a cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner and awards ceremony and feature stars like Harrison Ford, Bo Derek, Jane Seymour, James Keach and many others. Furthermore, guests are being asked to bring old cell phones to help the Verizon Wireless Hopeline program, which works to help stop domestic violence.

Bo Derek: A Little Hypocritical?

A recent article about her cosmetic surgery at Make Me Heal mentioned that Bo Derek, screen vixen star of sultry films such as “10,” is both an animal rights activist–and a hunter. Squinting to make sure I’d read right, I immediately did a quick search for more sources.

There’s not a whole lot about Bo the Huntress online; but according to Celebrity Wonder, the actress campaigned against the killing of horses overseas for food, launched her own line of dog products–and is a member of the NRA who regularly hunts. Um, WTF? To me, it just seems a little off the mark when you think eating horses is cruel while shooting wild animals is good clean fun. Plus, she’s a big supporter of the Bush Administration, whose animal rights record is hazy to say the least. A little consistency, Bo?

Schwarzenegger Names Bo Derek to Horse Racing Commission

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has named animal rights activist Bo Derek to the California Horse Racing Board. Bo is a long time horse lover who has been lobbying Congress for the last five years to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption!  Human consumption?! According to the Animal Welfare Institute, over 100,000 horses are killed each year and shipped to Europe and Japan to go on dinner plates!! It’s great to know such a strong vocal advocate for our equine friends will be watching over horse racing.

Grrrrreat! Harrison Ford, Bo Derek Launch Global Effort To Save Tigers

Harrison Ford surprised schoolchildren on a trip to Washington’s National Zoo, by appearing with members from the World Bank to officially launch a new global effort to save tigers from extinction. The 65-year-old star has been ramping up his philanthropic efforts — mainly we suspect due to the spotlight of the latest Indiana Jones movie shining brightly on him.

The campaign, which also has the support of celebrities like Bo Derek and Robert Duvall, will highlight how deforestation, development and illegal poaching are having a devastating impact on tiger populations across Asia. “I am concerned about the future of the entire animal community and human community as well,” Ford said. “The focus on tigers today is a critical opportunity to talk about tigers and talk about the communities in the places in which they live and the others who share that environment - humans included.”

Most recently, Ford participated in some new 30-second PSA’s for the organization WildAid urging people not to purchase or support illegal animal skins or poached products from abroad. “No thanks, just send me a postcard,” he says in the videos.
