One of my all-time favorite stars, Carrie Underwood, recently opened up her checkbook for a great cause.

On Friday, the country music star presented more than $117,000 of musical instruments to schools in her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma.

The gift was a joint ever between Underwood’s C.A.T.S. Foundation (Checotah Animal, Town and Schools) and ACM Lifting Lives (Academy of Country Music).

“I am so proud to have come from such a wonderful community that helped shape me as a person,” said Carrie. “And I can think of nothing better than to share the gift of music with the students in my hometown. It’s so great to be able to give back in a way that can truly better the lives of these kids and help create dreams and opportunities.”

We love that! Check out more of what Carrie has to say in the video below!

As expected, Rush Limbaugh’s endorsement of the Humane Society of the United States is not sitting well with pro-hunting groups — particularly Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. The latter has especially been vocal in rallying support against HSUS ever since Carrie Underwood decided to donate to the group through music sales. According to the Washington Times, twenty-eight groups representing millions of hunters and sportsmen are demanding that the conservative radio commentator end his collaboration with the HSUS and stop “helping them to mainstream their image in the minds of reasonable people.”

Said HSUS President Wayne Pacelle to the WP, “I’m embarrassed for them that they would criticize Rush for amplifying our message that dogfighting and other malicious forms of animal cruelty are unacceptable in society,” he said. “I think the folks that are criticizing it are unbelievably knee-jerk — I guess they want to provide comfort to dogfighters? It just doesn’t make any sense. . . . There are certain things that civil society should agree on.”

Interesting enough — when Limbaugh was asked about his endorsement of the “Humane Society” on FOX News, he veered away from the topic saying, “Well, now, you’re getting into politics…” Hmmm…one thing I thought we were supposed to take away from these PSAs that respect of animals is neither left or right — but just good, common sense? If Limbaugh won’t even back up his support of HSUS in an interview, could it be that he’s feeling the pressure?

Despite the best efforts of groups like the The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, Carrie Underwood prevailed last night in winning the Academy of Country Music Awards coveted “Entertainer of the Year” honor. Pro-hunting organizations like the ‘Sportsmen’ have been promoting campaigns against the singer ever since she announced that profits from the sales of her new song Home Sweet Home would go towards the Humane Society of the United States.

With the CMAs offering online voting for the first time, the ‘Sportsmen’ encouraged members to vote for “anyone but Underwood” in the category. As word spread like fire through Twitter and websites, fans of the singer and those that support her mission to help animals came out in droves to counter the offensive. Of course, with such passionate backing from both sides over something that has nothing do with music, we wonder if the CMA’s will allow online voting again next year.

Either way, congratulations Carrie on the honor! Your compassion for animals and support of organizations like the HSUS is an inspiration to many. More info on her big night available here.

We first heard from Rick Story, vice president of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, who called the HSUS a “radical organization that seeks to end hunting and other responsible uses of animals in America.” Now, a new article on American Daily under the category of “Terrorism” is claiming that Underwood and American Idol are directly funding domestic terrorism.

Can these people fall any further down the proverbial rabbit hole?

The article quotes David Martosko, research director for the Center for Consumer Freedom, who says there is a “disturbing underbelly” to animal rights groups and that “detonating bombs, making death threats, and physically assaulting people” is a part of their MO.

In response, Michael Markarian, Executive Vice-President of External Affiars at HSUS, called the Center for Consumer Freedom an” industry front for tobacco, alcohol and agribusiness interests, and its stock-in-trade involves taking aim at organizations that promote food safety, public health, or animal welfare.” He also mentioned the group’s previous attacks on Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for their anti-drunk driving and public health campaigns. “CCF’s libelous statements are outrageous, and speak to the disreputable nature of this corporate front group,” Markarian adds. “In fact, it’s not the first time CCF has lied about us. Two years ago the group retracted previous statements they knew to be false and defamatory.”

It’s no surprise that these groups would make such leaps of drama to tie Underwood and American Idol to terrorism. In their bag of tricks, it’s the most sensational way to smear someone. Thankfully, most Americans can see through this smokescreen and laugh off such commentary as desperate and baseless. Rock on, Underwood!

Earlier this week, Carrie Underwood announced that she will be donating a portion of the proceeds from her new version of Mötley Crüe’s Home Sweet Home to The Humane Society of the United States. Underwood’s song will get the prime-time treatment each week on American Idol — as the show has adopted the single as its goodbye theme for voted off contestants.

Of course, not everyone is a fan of this charitable donation — particularly the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, a lobbying and hunters rights group. “Carrie Underwood has decided to use her talents to benefit an organization dedicated to destroying the rights of thousands of her fans,” Rick Story, vice president of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, said in a news release. “HSUS does not operate or oversee animal shelters; it is a radical organization that seeks to end hunting and other responsible uses of animals in America.”

The U.S. Sportsman Alliance is urging hunters across America to contact executives at FOX Broadcasting and “demand that Underwood’s song not be given a stage to raise money for HSUS.”

Um, yea, good luck with that one. Underwood is a heavy star and FOX isn’t going to drop her single and alienate her music because some hunters are upset at her choice in charity. ‘Nuff said.

Home Sweet Home will be the new song played on Idol when contestants are voted off and will be available for download on iTunes on March 16. About her generous gesture, Underwood said:

“I’ve always loved this song, and besides being very fitting for Idol, to me, the title is also very fitting with animal rescue and finding animals their own homes. So we felt it was important to tie the release into an amazing animal charity like the HSUS.”

So I think it’d be really awesome if the guy just kind of, you know, put a lot of thought into it. . . made the atmosphere nice. Maybe light some candles or make some decorations or something to sit around, and make me a good meal, a home-cooked meal.”

“I’m a vegetarian, too, so you’d know, it’d be like he went through some thought and looked up a recipe that he figured I would like, and you know, complete with dessert, of course.”

Confession: I have three very serious celebrity crushes. And the lucky ladies are (in no particular order):Natalie Portman, Jenna Fischer and Carrie Underwood.

Man oh man do I love me some Carrie Underwood! A super-talented country singer who’s not only uber gorgeous, but a long-time vegetarian! I mean do you get any better than that? SERIOUSLY??

In a new interview with CBS, Underwood discusses her family, musical influences and being VEG. She says:

“I’m a vegetarian and there are some parts of the United States where you do not announce that to the audience. And while the crowd might be kind of playing with me, sometimes if I do let that slip, I do get booed. So it’s something I’m working on-keeping me vegetarianism to myself.”

Come on, don’t keep that to yourself! We need badass celebs like you serving as role-models for all those hopeful young veggies out there! Think about it Carrie. And also…will you marry me?

Check out the whole interview in the video below.

-Carrie Underwood on respecting her cattle-ranching parents and being a vegetarian. Considering how much I love country music and how much I love being veg, I think it’s safe to say that Carrie just might be the perfect woman!
