If you’re like me and grew up watching Captain Planet, you’re probably pretty psyched there’s now an organization in the planetary hero’s name — aptly titled the Captain Planet Foundation.

This years the foundation is holding their 14th annual Xmas Party in Atlanta, GA to raise money for their work supporting hands-on environmental projects for youth in grades K-12.  The event will feature musical guests such as Rolling Stones keyboardist and Georgia tree farmer Chuck Leavell, Night Ranger singer Jack Blade, .38 Special’s Jeff Carlisi and the Romantics’ Wally Palmar. The evening will also include a cameo by celebrity guest Chevy Chase and his environmentalist wife, Jayni. 

Oh yeah, and for all you fashion-curious folks out there, Turner Seydel, chairwoman for the organization will be wearing an eco-friendly dress made out of sustainable silk, courtesy of a “free-range silk worm that was allowed to turn into a moth.” Go, Turner!

Over the weekend, Gavin was in Miami for the Chris Evert/ Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic to raise money to fight drug abuse, child abuse, and homelessness. Chris Evert is a charity rockstar who helps support wonderful organizations like Make-A-Wish Foundation, Women’s Sports Foundation, Save the Children and many more. 

Avid player Gavin was joined by fellow celebs Chevy Chase, Jim Courier, Greg Norman, Jon Lovitz, Mary Pierce and others who participated in The Classic — which has raised over $16 million for its sponsored charities in the past.

What’s your definition of eco chic? Wanna know mine? My definition of eco chic is taking the A train uptown to the American Museum of Natural History and going to a fancy environmentally aware fashion show sponsored by green companies and shock full of eco-celebs. At said party I might even drink expensive wine, say hello to Adrien Grenier and watch stars model the latest and greatest eco-clothing amongst some of New York’s top fashionistas.

Yes Ecorazzi readers, you guessed it! Last night I had the privilege of attending the Be Eco Chic fashion event at none other than New York City’s famous American Museum of Natural History. The evening was a blast and besides the Adrien Grenier siting, I spotted Chevy Chase, Dominque Swain, Coltrain Curtis and many more famous faces who all came out to support green fashion.

As the show began our hostess Angela Lindvall reminded us that being green doesn’t mean you can’t be fashion forward. And even though I myself dress like a clueless straight dude, after watching a runway full of eco outfits by designers like Chado Ralph Rucci, DKNY, Carmen Marc Valvo, Nicole Miller and Loomstate, I seriously thought about learning a thing or two about fashion.

Besides hob-knobbing with New York’s elite, I also got the chance to say hello to some of Ecorazzi’s nearest and dearest, including our friends at 360 Vodka, Bradford Rand (founder of the Go Green Expo), and the folks at the Sierra Club.  As the night winded down we were treated to a performance by Jon McLaughlin — who I have to say was frigin fantastic – and then invited to a glorious after party that, sadly, I wasn’t able to make. Of course on hand was one of Ecorazzi’s most fashionable photographers, Melissa Rosenberg, who managed to get some great shots from the evening.

Chevy Chase frightened the hell out of one blogger this morning when he appeared to resemble Dick Cheney sitting in the crowd during the Democratic National Convention. “At first glance, it appeared to be evidence of hell freezing over,” she exclaimed. “Still, the resemblance is scary enough to warrant our recommendation that Oliver Stone immediately recast Chase as Cheney in his upcoming George W. The United Nations is sending massive thanks to Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s Not On Our Watch organization — after the group donated $500,000 to rescue a UN Food Program that was at risk of shutting down completely. U.N. spokeswoman Bettina Luescher says, “We sent out a press release one day saying we were on the verge of closing it down and the next day we had $500,000. They shine the light on the real emergencies and step up where we really need help.” Nice work, boys. [Read more...]

Tomorrow he’ll do just that in East Hampton, with fellow actors Lori Singer, Mercedes Ruehl and others for the annual Artists vs. Writers Charity Softball Game. Sadly, regular participant and pitcher Roy Scheider of Jaws fame will not be starring as pitcher this year; the actor died in February.

In its 60th year, the event will be benefiting the charities Phoenix House, the country’s leading nonprofit center for drug rehabilitation; East End Hospice, a New York hospice where no one is ever denied care for inability to pay, and East Hampton Day Care Center, which provides support for working families and single mothers.

Last Thursday, media mogul, eco-warrior (and future cannibal) Ted Turner held a fundraising event for his Captain Planet Foundation at Producing Director Anthony Pratt’s penthouse atop New York City’s Sherry-Netherland hotel. In attendance were a crowd of deep pockets, Chevy Chase, and his environmentally-focused wife Janie.

According to emagazine, most vegetarians (vegans would have left after five minutes) would have been disappointed in the cuisine being served: tiny grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken satay and mini versions of Mr. Turner’s famed bison burgers. See, Ted is the largest landowner in North America — which also contain the largest herds of bison — something he would like to see a lot more of in the American diet. We’re not sure if Captain Planet know about these plans yet…

“Chase and his enthusiastic eco-advocate wife Janie were the celebrity du jours of the evening. They gamely posed for pictures, and Janie discussed the importance of greening the nation’s schools from top to bottom, and educating kids about the process while they’re at it. She mentioned the traveling art show called Cool Globes, which brings attention to global warming solutions by various artist renderings on actual globes. The globes are beautifully detailed and colored, some with striking designs, some with technical wizardry, and the project involves a whole curriculum for classrooms.”

For his part, Chase assume the role of auctioneer and received bids from the audience on signed guitars, photos, and other memorabilia. A dinner with Turner even went for $9K. Hope the winner likes meat.

Anchorwoman Katie Couric arrived fashionably late for the red carpet entrance but the host of the Global Green USA’s Designing a Sustainable and Secure World Awards had to first deliver the CBS Evening News to the American public.

The awards event was held at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park City and was packed with eco-friendly celebs, active environmentalists and green innovators. Speakers included actors Josh Lucas, Josie Maran, playwright Eve Ensler, and the beautiful and talented Glenn Close. Other notable celebs in attendance were comedian Chevy Chase, actress Kyra Sedgewick, CNN contributor Jeff Greenfield, and Matt Peterson, President & CEO, Global Green. Josie Maran, who recently launched a green beauty product line, proudly also announced that her baby wears G Diapers. She shared and interesting green fact that I was unaware of: flying on a red eye gives off more carbon gas than other flights so she tries to avoid doing so.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg excitedly shared the details and video of plans for the city’s first Green School in the Lower Manhattan. Sloan & Roger Barnett, owners or Shaklee Corp. and winners of the Organizational Design Award, explained how they got started. Their son was diagnosed with severe asthma. After extensive digging they discovered no family history of asthma and realized their son must have gotten asthma from the environment. They urged for every school to use natural cleaning products.

Pratt Industries earned the Industrial Design Award and was accepted by Anthony Pratt, CEO & Chairman. This year’s winner for the Green Building Design Award Media and Entertainment Design Award given to Discovery and accepted by David Zaslav, President & CEO. The Founder Award was given to Scott Seydel, President, EVCO.

The night included a silent Eco-Auction and contributors included BOSCH, Citizen Watch, Farm 2 Market, EDUN. My personal favorite was the ME & Ro bracelet. During the delicious, organic dinner I had a chance to talk to some attendees and a heard repeated sentiment about the great Brad Pitt. Most agreed he has been doing a stellar job getting people aware, but several people expressed mild disappointment that he did not even mention the name Global Green on the Today show interview yesterday in New Orleans.
