Christian Bale’s Acting Finesse Came From Studying Horses

Filed under: animals — michael @ 10:36 am

Christian Bale grew up a vegetarian and was instilled with a strong appreciation for animal welfare. That childhood education has carried over to adulthood as all of the actor’s pets were at one time stray cats and dogs.

But the Batman star credits his greatest influence on acting to horses. “I love horses. I’ve learned from them,” he recently told The Japan Times. “Once you master a horse — but it also masters you — you gain more confidence in yourself. When you can mount it and move it and move along with it, that is a hard-won and very real accomplishment,” he said.

All mounting aside, Bale has been known to make up stories and fabricate background info to mess with the media. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the case — but if not, kudos to him for drawing inspiration from a truly original source.

The Green Picture: Christian Bale Wears Sea Shepherd

Filed under: campaigns, green and famous — lori @ 3:01 pm

The Caped Crusader aka Christian Bale was photographed at the Heathrow airport wearing a different  super-hero outfit - a Sea Shepherd T-shirt.  Recently we reported Christian’s stats as a vegetarian and prolific activist, so it’s no surprise to see him wearing the mark of the good pirates of the seas.

Sea Shepherd is an international non-profit working for marine wildlife conservation, and they’re known for using kick-ass direct action to investigate, defend, and shut down evil wrong doers. This, fall the org will be featured in a new documentary series on Animal Planet called Whale Wars.

I can totally picture Christian out on one of their boats defending whales and seals.

The Dark Knight Is Also A Vegetarian

Filed under: animals, food & drink — michael @ 11:32 am

Amongst the vague, but disappointing chatter, that actor Christian Bale was arrested today in London for assault (of which kind, we have no idea) against his mother and sister, I also came across an interesting tidbit that the actor is vegetarian. This may be a small detail to some, but for those that still believe vegetarians/vegans can’t possibly bulk up, I offer Bale as additional proof.

Apparently, the actor had an early influence from an animal-activist parent and went completely veg after reading the story Charlotte’s Web. He’s also a devoted animal lover, with two dogs [Mojo and Ramone] and three cats [Miriam, Molly, and Lilly], all of which are strays that he found. For your trivia pleasure, here are some additional Bale facts courtesy of IMDB:

>>Christian is active in many organizations, including Ark Trust, Greenpeace, the World Wildlife Foundation, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the Redwings Sanctuary, and the Happy Child Mission, and a school for street kids in Rio De Janeiro.

>>Auditioned for the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic (1997) and almost got the role but people felt that it wouldn’t be “fair” having two Brits playing two Americans (Rose was American as well, she says in the movie that the Titanic was a slave ship bring her back to America).

>>If he plays an American character, he will use an American accent in all the interviews related to the film. He says he does this so the audience isn’t confused.

Could Batman’s Next Villain Be An Eco-Terrorist?

Filed under: movies — michael @ 8:58 pm

With the next Batman movie set to hit theaters this summer, fans are already speculating what’s next for the Dark Knight and if a third movie might be on the horizon. Apparently, Christian Bale is interested in creating a trilogy and would consider signing on for a third flick. “Let’s wait and see,” Bale said. “I would, knowing the ‘Dark Knight’ story, like very much to complete a trilogy. And I think that knowing the story of ‘The Dark Knight,’ it leaves you anticipating something that really can get very, very interesting for a third. Now, the question would be: Is Chris [Nolan] going to be doing it? Because to me I find it tricky to imagine working on it without it being a collaboration with Chris.”

Those are promising words — and with Bale looking ahead — fans are now debating what villain or villains might be featured next. One of the potential baddies could be none other than Poison Ivy — an eco-terrorist obsessed with plants, botany, and environmentalism. From Wikipedia,

“She uses toxins from plants and her own bloodstream for her criminal activities, which are usually aimed at protecting the natural environment. She creates love potions that ensnare Batman, Superman, and other strong-willed individuals.”

Sounds like someone I dated in High School. God, her breath…

But seriously, we’ve seen Ivy before in the critically-acclaimed Batman and Robin played by Uma Thurman. Could an updated, Gore-educated, Whole Foods-shopping, Living With Ed-watching, Prius-driving Ivy be far away? No idea. We’re thinking it will never happen and join the hordes of others that believe Two-Face will take the bad guy position for the next film.

But here’s to being proven wrong. Bring on the plants.
