If I told the average person that Clay Aiken was working with the Tap Project, most would probably assume it involved a cane, top hat and a shuffle, shuffle, flap. But they’d be WRONG!

The Tap Project is a program that raises money for UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world by asking restaurant patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free. For every dollar raised, a child will have clean drinking water for 40 days. That’s pretty frigin incredible, right?

Check out Clay on the video below and make sure you stop by TapProject.org to find out how YOU can get involved!

It seems like this guy has been focusing on more than just his music. According to his posts on the UNICEF blog, Clay Aiken has been visiting Somalia and Kenya to promote UNICEF’s work getting kids back to school in areas that have been all but destroyed by election-related violence. He talks about the sight of kids trying to learn among the charred remains of their former classrooms and the need to get the children back to school.

Here, he makes a touching statement about the importance of education and the work UNICEF is doing:

“Every child has the right to an education. Education transforms lives and breaks the cycle of poverty that so many children are caught in. And an educated child will make sure his or her own children receive an education too. This is just another one of the many amazing ways UNICEF is helping children today, while also building a safer Kenya tomorrow.”

Personally, I believe that education is the key to our future and the key to solving our environmental problems, so hooray for Clay for bringing some celeb status to these issues.

Here in New York we have this little thing called Broadway. You might have heard of it – big shows, big voices, big budgets, and well — luckily — also big hearts.

The Broadway community came out this week for the annual Easter Bonnet Competition to raise money for Broadway Cares Equity Fights Aids. Basically how the event works is that companies from various Broadway, Off-Broadway and touring productions offer skits, songs and/or dances as well as a bonnet created specially for the competition with all the proceeds going to BCEFA. I wasn’t able to make it out this year, but some friends of mine attended and said it was super great!

As always, the event was star-packed with famous faces like Megan Mullaly, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf, David Hyde Pearce and the dude with the biggest (and arguably craziest) fans I’ve ever seen, Clay Aiken.

Oh and the best part: this year those illustrious Broadway Belters earned a whopping 3.7 million dollars all for charity! Oh me oh my!

If you missed the event but still want to give a little pocket change, visit the Broadway Cares website and anti-up!

Shortly after posting, the comments came rolling in with support for the pop star turned Spamalot actor. Say what you want about Aiken…but that kid has some serious fans.

Well now another UNICEF ambassador, Lucy Liu, is asking Americans to pitch in during World Water Week and pay the extra $1 for a glass of tap water to help save children’s lives in Africa. Liu is particularly aware of the problem, having just returned from Cote d’Ivoire in Africa — an area lacking clean drinking water.

Liu says, “If you go to a restaurant and they’d give you tap water for free, they’re asking you to donate a dollar for the tap water. One dollar will provide water for 40 children for one day, which is incredible. It’s kind of great – you get to go out and enjoy food with people and you get to give back in such a small and simple way.”

To learn more about The Tap Project visit their website and find a participating restaurant.

That dollar will then be donated to UNICEF where it can provide safe drinking water for a child in a Third World country for 40 days.
