Colin Firth Hopes You’ll Pay $360 For A Cardboard Bag

Don’t get me wrong, I love all the cool, wacky, sustainable ideas coming out of the fashion world. But I’ve yet to get my head around the crazy prices associated with a designer’s name. Take this new environmentally-friendly handbag from designer Giles Miller. It’s made from cardboard sourced from sustainably-harvested forests. It also costs more than $360 US.

Of course, your investment won’t just sog away in the rain — Giles has made sure with a water-resistant spray coating the item. We’re just not so sure how eco-friendly that is — nor whether including a leather strap was a wise idea either. Don’t expect Natalie Portman to be lugging this around.

Regardless, actor Colin Firth has decided to sell the paper bag in his new green shop in West London. We wish him the best, but if these prices are the norm, we expect there’s going to be a bit more browsing than buying going on.

Scarlett Johansson Offers Up A Date For Oxfam

Although the auction for a date with actor Colin Firth has ended (a personalized birthday message from the actor also just ended yesterday for over $3K!), Oxfam is offering up their next prize in the form of actress Scarlett Johansson.

From today until March 12th, you can bid on the opportunity to win a date with Scarlett at the premiere of her latest film, He’s Just Not That Into You. Well, I guess it’s not so much a date as it is a “meet n’ greet” — you get two tickets as Scarlett’s guest and the opportunity to briefly chat with her. We figure, however, that Johansson will probably be quite gracious as she’s a firm supporter of Oxfam and takes the whole charity angle quite seriously.

You’ll also receive chauffeured car service to the premiere (see if you can sneak onto the red carpet!), and hair and makeup styling for one. Check out the video below for more from Scarlett!

eBay and Oxfam Help You Win A Date With Colin Firth

These days Oxfam seems to be popping up just about everywhere. Earlier this week I spoke with Minnie Driver about her steadfast loyalty to the British charity, but it’s not just the Minniemeister who’s all up in Oxfam’s grill.

Oxfam has just teamed up with eBay to help raise money for their world wide poverty relief effort by offering four charity auctions (each lasting 10 days) to get some one on one time with a few famous Oxfam Ambassadors. First up is chance to win a date with Colin Firth and attend a screening of his new movie, Mamma Mia.

The Colin Firth package (not to be confused with Colin Firth’s package) will include two VIP tickets to the world premiere of Mamma Mia, an invite to the after party, and of course chauffer service for the evening. Other upcoming celebrity auctions include: tickets to the New York premiere of The Sex and the City Movie and a chance to be Scarlett Johansson’s guest at the June premiere of He’s Just Not That Into You.

So take out a loan, borrow from your parents, or just rob a bank, and hightail it over to eBay to win a date with Colin and help out a super great charity. Sprig Enjoys Some Celebrity Eco-Mania At Sundance!

Our stylish friends over at Sprig have just released a video of their good times at Sundance. Sprig stalkerazzis (though we’re naming them honorary ecorazzis) Brit Liggett and Jennifer Prediger hit the streets and spoke with Tom Hanks, Colin First, Emily Blunt, and a bunch of other celebs about their eco-friendly habits and naughty sins. For instance, Tom Hanks has solar panels above his office, drives two electric vehicles — but feels horrible about reading the morning paper. Yea, we think he’s an a#$hole too. C’mon Tom, pick up your game!

Colin Firth: Saving The Planet One Estonian Christmas Decoration At A Time.

Colin Firth will soon be turning in his bangers and mash for something new: organic bangers and mash. That’s right mate, Firth, along with brother in law Nicola Giuggiolis, is opening an “ecological destination store” next week in west London. What in the world is an ecological destination store? Well, just that. Firth’s shop will include a spectrum of environmentally friendly and world healthy products that are impressive enough to make even Daryl Hannah crack a nut.

From a computer made of bamboo to Estonian Christmas decorations ( an obvious must have on any Christmas list), Firth is practicing what he preaches by not only selling earth conscious items, but setting a new precedent for “green” London. The pollution free paradise will be Britain’s first and only self-sustainable building by way of sun, plants and solar heating. “We want this to be a good place to meet, and enjoy, as well as learn how to improve the planet”, says Giuggiolis. So in the spirit of education (liquid “u” of course), there will also be solar panels, wind turbines and a green-roof insulation system installed for each guest to explore on their own.

A little bit Hollywood, a little bit Britain, there’s no question that Colin Firth is putting his money where his mouth is. Now if only he could fix that nasty food.

Colin Firth To Open Eco-Friendly Shop In London

Actor Colin Firth is placing the final touches on a new green store in London imaginatively called “Eco”. Set to open next month, it will stock Fairtrade and ethical goods, as well as offering customers the services of environmental experts who can teach them how to make their homes greener. Kind of like a green Home Depot, but not really. From the article,

“I’m no eco hero’, said Firth. ‘I’m doing the shop because I think it’s a good idea. If I’m in a position to say anything, it is because I’m one of the culprits. I’m culpable because I’m a consumer. When you start to think about global warming, Western over-consumption, our energy wastage, it makes you want to improve the negative effects of your complicity in it.

‘The thing is, if you have been given the privileges we have, if you have this many perks, surely you can help out. Rather than being a luvvie with a lofty opinion preaching to people, I prefer to do things, to get involved, put my money where my mouth is and learn along the way.’”

For those of you wondering what a “luvvie” is (like me), here’s the definition: “A luvvie is a rather overexuberant thespian.” Your word of the day, compliments of Firth.

The new “Eco” store will be the actor’s third green business. He also has two ethical cafes in Covent Garden and Notting Hill. Awesome. Now go watch Love Actually. C’mon, you know you want to.
