Back in September of 2008, Daryl Hannah mentioned that she was planning on taking the iconic Trans Am her character from the movie Kill Bill drove and turning into an all-electric vehicle. She did have some reservations about the conversion, however. “Because it’s a heavier car, it’s not going to get as long a range,” she said.

Looks like Hannah decided to wait and instead focus on using the gasoline engine she already had. The actress told MNN that the Kill Bill Trans Am has been converted to run on 100% pure alcohol (or ethanol). This would make it the second car in her garage running on an alternative fuel after her “badass” biodiesel El Camino.

What’s next for Hannah’s growing fleet of eco cars? According to MNN, as soon as they’re available, she has her heart set on an all-electric Phoenix truck.

The stars came out in costume this weekend for the 16th annual Children Affected by Aids Foundation’s Dream Halloween event. The goal of the night, which also includes fundraising, is to create an experience that exemplifies what every child would dream of when celebrating Halloween. Celebs in attendance included Jamie Lee Curtis as a flower child (who also arrived in her hydrogen-powered Honda Clarity), Daryl Hannah as a cat, Hilary Shephard as Dorothy, and Noah Cyrus and Emily Grace Reaves as, well, I’m not sure. While most people arrested during an anti-mountaintop removal protest last June have pleaded guilty to the charges filed against them, Daryl Hannah is not one of them. In fact, it looks like she’ll be fighting the arrest come this November, when the trial against her is expected to commence.

Of course, this is probably some calculated thinking on her part. A movie star on trial? The media laps up such moments — and while this probably won’t be something that lasts more than a day, it gives Hannah yet another platform on which to express her views on mountaintop removal. The more people that know about this issue, the better.

Mountaintop removal (MTR) is happening in extremely economically depressed areas with the vast majority being in southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. In these areas, people don’t have a loud voice, or the resources to let the world know, raise hell and fight it…and these communities are dying fast.”

Daryl Hannah is once more being asked to come to West Virginia, but this time she’ll be in the court room instead of demonstrating against mountaintop removal. The actress was arrested last month during a coal mining protest for “obstructing and impeding traffic in front of a Massey Energy mine in Raleigh County.” She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to a Raleigh County magistrate clerk, Hannah could lose her driver’s license if she fails to show up for the hearing. This should be interesting. If anything, hopefully the media will latch on to her once more being in town and she can continue spreading the word on destructive mountaintop removal.

The hearing date has yet to be set, but we’ll keep you updated as more develops.

A little more than a week after being arrested for civil disobedience during a mountaintop removal protest in West Virginia, Daryl Hannah is telling her side of the story in a new article for the Huffington Post. She writes: “Why would I fly across the country on my own dime knowing I would most likely end up in jail in one of the poorest parts of America? Well, have you ever heard of MTR? Don’t feel bad, my friends are intelligent, well-read and informed people, but most of them had never heard of MTR (Mountain Top Removal) either.”

Hannah goes on to explain her position on the destructive practice — including the respect she has for the miners that depend on the work for their livelihood. She also includes some letters that she’s received since her arrest for citizens of West Virginia deeply effected by MTR. “I am sorry you were arrested but I thank you for standing up for what is right,” writes one woman. “We need to work on sustainable communities here in the mountains so that coal miners will have opportunities for jobs not so dangerous.”

The actress then rails against the fallacy that is “clean coal” technology saying: “Let me make one thing clear… there is no such thing as clean coal!!! ‘Clean coal’ is the industry’s attempt to “clean up” its dirty image — the industry’s greenwash buzzword. It is not a new type of coal. ‘Clean coal’ methods only move pollutants from one waste stream to another. Coal is a dirty business!”

As we covered previously, Daryl Hannah, along with NASA climate scientist James Hansen and former U.S. Rep. Ken Hechler, were among 31 people arrested during a display of civil disobedience at a mountaintop removal protest in West Virginia on Tuesday.

You’ve seen the pictures — now check out video from the event of Hannah being arrested and the ensuing craziness that erupted after the fact. Hey — at least she got to sit shotgun in the police cruiser.

Daryl Hannah has been arrested. Again.

The actress was charged this afternoon with about 30 other people — including were NASA scientist James Hansen and former Rep. Ken Hechler — for blocking State Route 3 near a Massey Energy subsidiary’s coal processing plant in Raleigh County.

The peaceful protest on mountaintop removal coal mining, organized by local residents and the Rainforest Action Network, was met with strong opposition by a surprising crowd of Massey Energy workers and coal supporters. According to police, tensions ran high and one Massey supporter was arrested and charged with battery during a brief confrontation with protesters. From the Charleston Gazette,

Speeches at the rally were often difficult to hear, drowned out at times by a large crowd of miners and their families who gathered around the stage and frequently shouted at and tried to argue with the speakers. Other miners blew air horns, revved motorcycle engines and blasted car stereos, at one point cranking up the 1984 song, “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” by Twisted Sister.

You know the shit’s about to hit the fan when Twisted Sister starts blaring!

Apparently, Hannah and Co. were arrested only after they dropped their initial plan to trespass on the Massey operation and sat down in the middle of the road, blocking traffic.

We commend all those at the rally for protesting this awful practice and drawing attention to the cause. Mountaintop removal is an incredibly destructive and irreversible mining technique that should have no place in America’s energy future. Unfortunately, there are some that fail to see the big picture — and how we’re related to it. Take, for instance, this awesomely ignorant and unbelievably real comment over on The Charlotte Gazette:

“What is the value of the mountain other than what is in it? Actually it is a thing of beauty when foliated, but not all that pretty when leaves are gone. They make some people sick to drive in and always impede transportation. They present danger during snow and ice. How many people, who live in the areas affected, really give a hang about the mountains keeping their original contour?”

“Just thought I would ask an obvious question that I have not seen posed heretofore. Would the people living in the area prefer a peak on a mountain or have it flattened out for alternate use. Make a place for housing, industry, schools, recreation, etc. Actually, what is preferred if the coal profit were removed? It seems that it is OK to create jobs, but the fact that some entrepreneur makes a profit gives rise to a problem for some.”
