Every now and then a blogger needs a break, and today I took mine today at Candle Cafe. Eight years ago, Candle was one of the first vegan restaurants I’d ever been to, and today it’s still one of my all-time favorites!

While chowing down on the Tofu Club I spotted Quatum Wellness author and friend of the site, Kathy Freston across the room. Kathy was recently included on Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed List and is constantly representing for all the cruelty-free fashionistas out there.

After a quick chat with Freston, I walked back to my table and noticed David Duchovny dining with friends. I know that David is an animal lover and it’s been whispered that he’s vegan. Wouldn’t that be the best?!

Moral of this story: if you want to see some of your favorite stars, just hang out at veggie restaurants. That’s where all the cool kids on the block go.

David Duchovny is representing Mother Earth this week and lending a hand to the gang at EHM. According to MyStateline.com:

“The star of X-Files and Californication helped the crew with the Stott’s organic garden. Duchovny prides himself on living an eco-friendly lifestyle, and the Stott’s home was rebuilt to include a lot of green elements.”

Sounds pretty awesome!

The family gets to view the house today and we can’t wait to see their reaction/ already have a box of Kleenex waiting.

With all those celebs getting hooked on various substances, it’s nice to see some of them are getting hooked on books! 

What Book Got You Hooked is an initiative of First Book — a charity whose mission is to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. 

From now until Sept. 30th, you’ll can log on to BooksForKids.org and “vote for the state to receive 50,00 new books for children in need” by sharing a memory of the first book that made reading fun for you. You’ll also have the opportunity to make a $10 donation that would provide four brand new books for a children in need.

Stars like Selena Gomez, Morgan Freeman, John Krasinski, David Duchovny and many more have already joined the campaign and shared some of their favorite reads!

“David Duchovny, totally solo (like, duh)hitting up Brentwood eatery A Votre Sante for brunch to go this past weekend. Double D opted not to let onlookers stare at him while he ate alone at the vegan-friendly place, so he waited outside for his takeaway meal.”

I’m still waiting to hear if David is rocking the vegan diet (he was at one point), but it sure looks like he might be.

“I’ve had my RAV4 EV [Toyota’s all electric 4x4] for the last four years,” Duchovny told the UK Times Online. “It was supposed to be a prototype for the next generation of cars. But the problem is that the car needs charging every night and the most you can do in a day is 80 miles. It is like being tethered.”

While 80 miles/day is probably enough for you and me, Duchovny is obviously traveling a bit more. Since moving back to New York City from Los Angeles, the 48-year-old actor has purchased a Vespa scooter to cope with the congestion and limits of his electric RAV4.

Fast forward a couple of years and David’s choices in green wheels should widen considerably — especially with regards to the range of electric vehicles. In an interview last year, the actor admitted that going green has its benefits, but cost is still a barrier. “We try to set an example. Unfortunately, you have to have the means to be green. That’s what has to change in this world. It should be cheaper to be green.”

Before I wrote about celebrities, I waited on them. As a young person in NYC I’ve worked in some of the city’s most famous vegetarian restaurants delivering tofu to the rich and famous. Therefore I can personally vow that David Duchovny (or Mulder as I was so tempted to call him throughout the meal) loves him some veggie nosh! 

In fact I have known for a while that David and his wife Tea Leoni were vegetarians (and perhaps vegan) and I was almost positive that Gillian Anderson was as well. However a recent tip from an Ecorazzi reader revealed that Anderson likes the occasional duck salad. Still, no one is hating because both Duchovny and Anderson have worked hard to help PETA with some very important campaigns.

In 1996, David signed PETA’s “Get Gillette Off the Set” petition to convince the company to stop testing on animals. Gillian’s also has worked on a series of animal rights campaigns and even won PETA’s Humanitarian Award in 2006. 

And so because Gillian and David are so damn involved in great campaigns, Ecorazzi and PETA are both encouraging you to sneak some healthy snacks into the theater and go check out X-Files: I Want to Believe. (Cue creepy X-Files music.) 

In attendance were such stars as Ed Begley Jr., Justin Long, David Duchovny, Farrah Fawcett, Daryl Hannah, Gary Ross, and many others. Here’s a bit about the film itself:

Ray Tuckby (Dylan Walsh) is a gentle soul stuck in a dead end job, trying to make ends meet for his family while living in the cheerless, remote desert town of Trona, California. Married to an agoraphobic wife and father to an awkward teenage son, Eddie (Jonah Hill), life has become an endless routine. Adding to his uneasiness is the local teenage drug kingpin’s control over his son and the community. When unforeseen events result in his family’s dissolution, Ray unexpectedly forms a new friendship with an outsider, Merl Striker (Danny DeVito), and his first love, who encourage Ray to hope for a better life, both for himself and for the forgotten community of Trona.

While the warm-up act that generally is considered the Golden Globes never showed, we’re all waiting with sick anticipation for the 2008 Academy Awards. Regardless of how the writers’ strike impacts things, there for sure will be plenty of alternative parties to enjoy. First and foremost on our radar is the 5th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party.

As with previous years, the event promotes “smart solutions to global warming”. Proceeds raised go towards Global Green’s climate initiatives and also their current main focus, the green rebuilding of New Orleans. Last year, Maroon 5 was the headlining act. This time ’round, Michelle Branch will be entertaining, as well as some “surprise musical guest” not yet announced.

This party is one of the most star-studded in attendance during Oscar week. Of course, it helps to have some of the top A-listers on your Los Angeles committee. These include Orlando Bloom, Kate Bosworth, Penelope Cruz, Leonardo DiCaprio, David Duchovny, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, and Charlize Theron.

Tickets are limited, but that doesn’t mean you can’t register now and enjoy the fun. $250 is the starting price for general admission — while $5K will get you “green carpet” access and entrance to the Patron Lounge. Remember, this is all for a great cause.

As always, we’ve no guarantees that any of the above celebrities will be in attendance. If previous years are any indication, however, you can expect to have one hell of a good time.
