flowersGoogle, which essentially has the economy of a small country, has answered Al Gore’s call to come up with a plan to reduce the United State’s dependence on fossil fuels. Google says the plan would cost about $4.4 trillion but over a 22-year period would save a net of about $1 trillion and create new jobs. Highlights include vehicle mileage being raised from 31mpg to 45mpg, complete replacement of electricity generation using coal and oil in favor or renewables, and Increasing use of plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars. Razzi Snap: Charlie Sheen Saves Pups with Wedding Vows

Filed under: animals, donations, events — sara @ 3:54 pm

flower snapCharlie Sheen, the hollywood bad boy that Denise Richards apparently just couldn’t turn good, got married (again) to a real estate investor, Brooke Mueller, last week. In lieu of china and candlesticks, the couple asked guest to make donations to Chrysalis: Changing Lives Through Jobs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless and disadvantaged people get jobs, and Pugs ‘N Pals, which rescues dogs in Southern California.

flower snapNick Lachey will be hosting the third annual Tacoma All-Star Celebrity Weekend September 21-22 to support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Tacoma General Hospital and the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Parenting Partnership Program (say that one three times fast). So far $1.4 million has been raised for these charities in the past; this year Nick and Sarah Larson, Ryan Stiles, Vanessa Minnillo and other celebs will be playing softball at Cheney Stadium in hopes of raising even more.

flower snapThe Detroit Red Wings are hosting the Ilitch Charities Celebrity Golf Classic today. Tim Allen, Dave Coulier, John Cusack, Cuba Gooding Jr., Thorsten Kaye, John McGinley, D.B. Sweeney and others will be playing to support Ilitch Charities, which supports community programs in community development, human services, education and recreation.

flower snapBen Affleck, Seth Meyers, Paul Rudd and Sarah Silverman will be playing at the PPA’s “Poker in the Ballpark” charity tournament tomorrow in support of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Wait, check out that lineup again. I would love to be a fly on the wall to just hear the conversations between these people. Can you imagine?

flower snapAustralian singer and soap star Imogen says it’s nice to be sexy for a cause. “One of the funny things about doing PETA work and other campaigns and then doing a lot of mens’ mag stuff is that I’ve always had this internal debate. Am I being a powerful female or, as some people might think, objectifying myself to men? But it’s been nice to do some sexy images that have a strong message.”

Gwen Stefani Gives the Clothes Off Her Back

Filed under: babies and bumps, donations, events, fashion — sara @ 9:10 am

Hots Nancy O’Dell of Access Hollywood and Samantha Harris of “Dancing with the Stars” kicked off the two-week long Isabella Oliver Celebrity Maternity Fashion Auction yesterday to benefit the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation. Founded by Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford, the foundation holds celeb charity auctions to benefit children’s programs. This year’s programs include America’s Second Harvest, The Art of Elysium, H.E.L.P. Malawi and Hope North.

While there were many famous faces at the kickoff tea and fashion event, including Denise Richards, Alison Sweeney, Julie Benz, and Anne Dudek, the list of stars who gave up some threads for charity is even more impressive. Along with garb given by many of the launch attendees, donations include a maternity top from Gwen Stefani, a wrap dress from Melissa Joan Hart, and items from Lindsay Lohan, Teri Hatcher, Julianna Margulies, Jenna Elfman and others.

Bidding continues until August 27. For more info, click here.

More on Pets of Bel-Air

Liar Liar - Don't Buy from Pet Stores!

Filed under: animals — rebecca @ 5:14 pm

Last week we wrote about celeb favorite pet shop, Pets of Bel Air, being closed down for operating without a license. The Humane Society sent in undercover investigators to check out the place, and the results are shocking. Watch the video below to see advice that employees of the store give to the investigator, including…”Never tell a customer that a puppy is sick. Even if he is.”

Pets of Bel-Air has responded to the video on their website:

Dear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to have the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we’ve held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

Each of our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from a USDA approved pet breeder. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected, and when we see the conditions that these animals are living in it feels as though the USDA has failed our business, and most importantly they have failed the animals that do not have a voice.

All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we are already in the process of paying the full amount owed. The permit fee is not a significant number, and went inadvertently unpaid. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, as we will continue to do business with the highest level of integrity.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Hmm. I’m going to side with the HSUS on this one…the video evidence is overwhelming. Besides the fact that I despite both pet stores and breeding.

The celebs such as Paris Hilton and Denise Richards that associated with this store are sure to be up in arms, as well. To learn more about puppy mills, visit the HSUS Stop Puppy Mills website.
