Bono Makes History With Valentine’s Day Charity Auction

Warms the heart

bono.jpgSome people love him, others can’t stand him. But whatever your take on the guy, you have to admit he’s a powerful force in raising money for charity.

Yesterday, an auction organized by Bono and artist Damien Hirst raised more than $42.5 million towards the fight against AIDS. Auctioneers Sotheby’s have hailed the total as one of the biggest single charity events in history. From the article,

Hirst donated seven of his works to the art sale in New York, including a cabinet filled with drugs to treat HIV, which fetched $7.15m (£3.6m). The auction broke records for 17 artists, including Banksy, whose Keep It Spotless work made $1.8m (£950,300). The price reached was more than six times its pre-sale estimate.

Said Bono of the event: “Tonight we got serious about love, and not just the love of art, but the love of our brothers and sisters suffering from Aids in the poorest places on the planet.”

The money raised will go towards the United Nations Foundation to support HIV/Aids relief programs in Africa, organized by the Global Fund to fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria. Among those that attended and/or purchased items were Christy Turlington and her husband Ed Burns, tennis legend John McEnroe, supermodel Helena Christensen, and actor/director Dennis Hopper. Since last year, Bono’s (RED) organization has raised more than $100 million dollars. Incredible.

Celebrities Get Spoiled Green At The Sundance Film Festival

Filed under: events, green and famous, healthy living, products — parrish @ 10:52 am

Sure, I write a lot about celebrities, but truth be told, I have no desire to ever actually be famous…until I hear about cool things like this. The Main Event Red Carpet Lounge will be setting up shop at the 27th Annual Sundance Film Festival with a treasure chest full of goodies for your favorite A, B, C, and even D list celebrities.

This year though, the lounge will be a little more colorful (talkin’ green here, people) by showcasing some new eco-friendly products, and offering the opportunity for celebrities to donate some of their precious time (and even more precious money) to a great charity, Friends Of Animals.

Some celebrities rumored to attend are: Dennis Hopper, Rex Lee (Entourage), Armand Asante, (American Gangster), Shar Jackson, Bart Johnson (High School Musical) and Christine Lakin (Georgia Rule). And the list of free eco-products is endless with some of my favorites being: Nanas Cookie Company, Fair Coffee Love, Terralina Organic Skincare, and La Dolce Lulu Organic Bakery.

Ok, I know some of you hate the fact that the privilege are getting even more privileged, but just think of it this way: the rich and famous are mere technicalities in this whole grand scheme. It’s way more helpful to the all the green companies to be publically recognized than it is to a few spoiled celebs. So, yes, maybe us common folk don’t get the luxury of free product, but we can wear a bathing suit in public without the fear of paparazzi zooming in on your midsection. I say it’s a pretty even trade.
