Diane Lane is so fun to watch on screen — I’ve seen Under the Tuscan Sun, like five times. Though you might be surprised to learn that off-screen she is known as a “bag lady”. At a recent fundraiser for Oceana she explained how she keeps reusable bags everywhere, and that is how she’s picked up the friendly nickname. She is passionate about the state of our oceans saying, “If we all make a very slight adjustment then we can all still have some whales, some walruses, and be able to swim in the ocean [and] not die from eating the food we’re fishing out of the ocean. People are becoming sick and don’t know it. The governments aren’t going to tell you anything about it, what’s in it for them?”

I appreciated this last comment most of all, ”Ignorance is a verb, it takes effort to be ignorant.

Hundreds came out Orange County’s Laguna Beach for The Sea Change Summer Party to raise money for environmental group Oceana, and to honor Harrison Ford’s consistent work for the environment. Ford sits on many boards for different environmental groups, he’s donated acreage in Wyoming for conservation, and his recent chest waxing to bring attention to deforestation is one of the most creative acts of advocacy I’ve scence in a long time. A perfect choice for someone to honor…he deserves it!

Oceana protects the world’s oceans and receives mondo celebrity support for their work. An impressive list of eco-stars were flown to the party in helicopters from L.A.! Crikey!

Celebrities who showed up were Ted Danson, Diane Lane, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, Beau Bridges, and Sam Waterson (also honored). Oceana paid $1,000 to purchase carbon credits to offset the party’s carbon emissions.

Global warming is hitting our oceans hard, and it seems the media often forgets to mention our troubled salty waters. I’m glad Oceana is out there working it and raising awareness.
