Joining the likes of of Emma Watson, actress Selena Gomez is prepping a new fashion line for young girls that will debut late next year. The UNICEF Ambassador, who recently spent time in Ghana to help raise cash for children in poverty, plans to make the line as eco-friendly as possible. “I want the pieces that can be easy to dress up or down, and the fabrics being eco-friendly and organic are super important,” she said. “Also, the tags will all have some of my inspirational quotes on them. I’m just looking to send a good message.”

The collection, to be called Dream Out Loud, will be created in partnership with designer Tom Melillo and fashion businesswoman Sandra Campos. It will include dresses, floral tops, jeans, skirts, jackets, and accessories like hats and scarves. Hooray for more green fashion for tweens!

We had heard that Emma Watson was prepping a collection to benefit UNICEF, but now we know that it will be called “Love From Emma” and launch late February 2010.

The Harry Potter actress and budding fashionista will be collaborating with green-clothing company People Tree on the new line — which will feature an eco-friendly range of  jersey t-shirts, dresses, woven skirts, trousers, shorts and knitwear for both men and women. “I wanted to help People Tree produce a younger range because I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” she said in the release. “It has been the most incredible gap year project.”

As we mentioned before, Emma is striving to make a difference with this clothing. Beyond the 100% organic and Fairtrade certified cotton, it is also made entirely by Fair Trade groups by hand, using hand weaving, hand knitting and hand embroidery to create livelihoods for some of the most disadvantaged people in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. “I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there,” she added.

She might ride around on broomsticks in the Harry Potter films, but in real life actress Emma Watson prefers hitting the streets in a hybrid. 

Last night on David Letterman the star revealed:

“I passed my test last year…and I’m driving my little, or my quite big, bulky, ugly Toyota Prius.”

Dave goes on to quiz the star about hybrid vehicles, asking whether she spends more time in the internal composition mode or if she prefers the electric mode. 

Here at the Razz we love to hear that Watson is a proud, green driver and hope that she’ll encourage all those 16+ Harry Potter fans to go Hybrid.

If ethical fashion is one road to take for a budding designer, then Emma Watson is basically walking in almost the opposite direction. There’s reason to hope, as I’ll explaing in a second, but first the bad news.

Watson, who plays Hermione in the Harry Potter series, is fronting the Fall advertising campaign for fashion house Burberry. As some of our readers know, Burberry does not have the most stellar credentials when it comes to animals. PETA even has an online game called “Bloody Burberry” where you run around a Burberry store spray painting fur coats and other tasks. Thankfully, Watson’s photoshoot does not contain any fur, but she’s still fronting for a company that still refuses to go with a faux alternative.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old actress has also announced that she’s creating a new clothing line for teenagers — with all of the profits going towards children’s charity UNICEF. That’s fantastic news, but it comes with a bit of trepidation. Apparently, Watson has been getting design advice from Karl Lagerfeld; the same guy labelled by PETA as a “fashion dinosaur who is as out of step as his furs are out of style.”

Now, obviously, we don’t expect Watson to start designing t-shirts with fur lining, but for someone who takes the environment seriously, we also hope she’ll consider more ethical realms of the fashion world — and steer clear of advice from those who continue to dabble in cruelty. That charitable clothing line definitely gives us hope!

The actress added, “I did my end of school project on global warming and hurricane Katrina. I studied the effects on a small scale, like the dam projects in London, but also on a bigger scale. My car is electric, I recycle, I take public transportation, I try not to buy and drink bottled water. I’m not perfect, but it’s something I feel strongly about.”

With regards to giving back, Watson is considering her options — saying that she wants to take a decision based on thorough information and to make a difference. She doesn’t want to just be the face of a project.

With thinking like that, it’s no wonder that Greenpeace might love having her involved.
