Hayden Panettiere has a new blog post up on TakePart.com sharing her thoughts on the fight to save whales and dolphins; and the passion that drives her to support orgs like The Whaleman Foundation and Surfers for Cetacean. She writes,

“The goals of our campaign are to end whaling along with all commercial dolphin and porpoise hunts worldwide while raising awareness to the other threats whales and dolphins face.”

“There is a brutal practice in Japan that has unnecessarily and painfully taken the lives of tens of thousands of dolphins and other small whales. They blind and frighten these helpless animals by hammering on metal poles in the water, driving them into small coves where they are trapped in nets and then killed. I experienced this first hand when Jeff invited me and Isabel Lucas, our Australian spokesperson, to join him on a trip to the notorious dolphin-killing cove of Taiji, Japan in October 2007.”

That now famous event  — one that almost ended violently — is currently being shown in the new documentary The Cove; which reveals the horrors of the Japanese dolphin slaughter.

The stars came out yesterday for the New York city premiere of the dolphin documentary The Cove, starring Hayden Panettiere and Isabel Lucas. In attendance were Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, and Adrian Grenier — who made the gossip fly by accompanying former flame Lucas.

The movie is a heart-wrenching affair and documents the more than 23,000 dolphins killed in one little cove in Taigi, Japan, each year. Back in November of 2007, Panettiere and Lucas joined several other activists in paddling out to the cove in an attempt to stop the slaughter of a pod of dolphins. Japanese fisherman cut off the group and they were forced to return to the shore due to escalating violence. (You can see some harsh video of the confrontation here.)

After the premiere, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., actor Fischer Stevens, Netscape founder Jim Clark and Mr. O’ Barry sat in front of the audience to take questions. According to the New York Observer, Kennedy told the group, “All people have to do is see this, and it’s going to change because it’s so outrageous what is happening there. They’re destroying public health, they’re destroying 23,000 dolphins a year, they’re slaughtering them in the most inhuman, awful way, they’re subverting democracy, they’re corrupting democratic institutions across the world.”

The usual suspects were out in full force and included Razz faves Constance Marie, who having recently given birth to a baby girl, couldn’t help but extol the virtues of veganism; the oh-so-beautiful Emily Deschanel; James Cromwell, Wendie Malick; Jennifer Coolidge; Esai Morales; Corey Feldman; and Jillian Reynolds, who reminded us to get our dogs from shelters and not pet stores. Other celebs lending their support included Gabrielle Anwar, Matt Grant, Joe Mantegna, and Victoria Stilwell.

Gorgeous ANTM judge, Nigel Barker, made hearts flutter as he strolled the red carpet, but was all business when it came to ending the Canadian Seal Hunt. “I’ve always been interested in marine biology so the Humane Society approached me last year to take over the Save the Seals Campaign from Sir Paul McCartney, and I’m very happy to do that.” And by the way, he LOVES the Razz!

Oakland Raiders star, Jarrod Cooper, was emphatic about animal shelters and volunteering. When asked if he was going to become a spokesman, Jarrod replied, “Well I’m thinking about just beating people up who don’t spay and neuter their dogs!” And that he would also be the first to whoop Michael Vick’s behind when he got out of jail! He was joking, of course!

Michael Vartan is also an impassioned supporter, especially against the atrocities committed in China. “In 2009 it absolutely shocks me that we haven’t gone to that next level in human consciousness. Events like this really help.” Heather Mills (who despite recent media reports is not the spokesperson for a new vegetarian menu at Burger King) has actively used her celebrity to campaign against the skinning of dogs and cats in China, and has just had the ban supported and passed by 27 countries. Way to go, Heather — and Burger King, if you’re listening, she’s open to the idea!

True they might be 12 years apart, but we thought Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere were definitely going to make it!

Sadly, long-time vegetarians Ventimiglia and Panettiere have recently called it quits! According to US magazine, the duo split because of a “lifestyle conflict.” Long story short: Hayden liked the club scene and all things “Young Hollywood,” while Milo was more of a homebody. Sorry to hear the sad news, guys!

When it come to Hayden Panettiere I’m torn right down the middle.

This chick does AMAZING work with whales, but then turns around and designs a calf-skin bag. She promotes Animal Planet like it’s her job, but also does the same for Neutrogena (which tests on animals). She attends green events, but has STILL yet to trade in her HUGE gas-guzzling SUV for something more eco-friendly. Right! So you can see why I’m conflicted. 

In “good” Panettiere news, the Hollywood starlet recently caused commotion on the set of Heroe’s when a member of the crew attempted to disperse a flock of birds in a tree who had disrupted a scene by  blasting them with a leaf blower. Hayden saw this, got pissed, and shouted, “What are you doing? How would you like someone to blow that thing inside your house?” She made such a ruckus that the crew had no choice but to move the scene to a different location.

So one point for Hayden, I guess. But twenty dollars says next week she designs a hat made out of bird feathers and chopped down trees. Stick to your guns, chica! We want you on Team Awesome!

We were pretty disappointed when Miley Cyrus’ first car turned out not be the Smart Car we had seen sporting her name — but instead was her Mom’s ‘used’ Porsche Cayenne SUV. After the “Go Green!” video she produced with her friend, the eco-themed song off her latest album, and the discussion with her dad on hybrids and pollution, we thought for sure that some fuel-efficient vehicle was in her future.

Turns out, we were right! It just took a little time driving around a massive SUV to convince her.

Miley recently announced on her website that she ditched the Porsche in favor of a new black Prius. “I didn’t like it ’cause it was bad for the environment, and it was too big,” she says in a new video. “My dad surprised me last night with a black Prius.” She says she prefers it over the SUV because it’s “good for the environment, and it’s adorable!”

Apparently not adorable enough. Miley’s first accessory for her new car? “I’m gonna get Hello Kitty floor mats!” Oh man, kill me with teen-cuteness.

And for those of you playing along at home, both Miley Cyrus and Paris Hilton have now beaten Hayden Panettiere to the hybrid scene. This, after the Heroes star announced in 2007 that she would get rid of her own Porsche Cayenne for some fuel-efficient wheels. C’mon Hayden!

The Heroes actress and longtime anti-whaling activist has been working with the Whaleman Foundation to help promote their Save The Whales Again! campaign. She also revealed that Barack Obama and her have already had conversations regarding the issue. “I’ve actually talked to him about it before,” she said. “He was raised in Hawaii, so I think he would agree with me about [protecting marine life].” Then she added: “[But] I’m not going to speak for him.”

Panettiere is also working on a documentary with the Whaleman Foundation to further educate the public. She added, “There’s movement [on this issue] every day — just generating awareness, which is the best way to stop it because a lot of people are unaware of what actually goes on.”

Hayden Panettiere took patients from the Los Angeles’ Children’s Hospital who are currently being treated for problems including aneurisms, strokes, paralysis of the nerves and spine and sickle cell anaemia, on a shopping trip San Gabriel department store Kohl’s on Saturday.

Rumor has it that Hayden tried to give some friendly-fashion advice, but the girls had their own ideas about what to buy. The 20-year-old actress laughed: “Not many of them listened to me!”

While my heart is still broken about the Panettiere’s calf-skin ways,  what Hayden has done for dolphins in Japan is totally commendable and this good deed just proves that the young starlet does indeed have a great heart! Hopefully, PETA’s undercover footage will help educate Hayden on how cruel and environmentally destrucive leather can be!

As many of you know, Panettiere is not only a vegetarian, but has worked super hard to bring attention to saving the whales in Japan. So I’m just a little confused about why she’s not only peddling their less than cruelty-free products, but has even created her own $295 “Hayden Clutch” – an Italian calfskin clutch decked out with a 24-carat gold plated lion head. CALFSKIN!!

I think there’s a real disconnect here with Hayden (and many other animal-friendly people) when it comes to leather products. How can you work so hard to help one animal and then actively contribute to the deaths of so many others? Do you think Hayden is being a little hypocritical or is leather not that big of a deal?
