Jack Johnson is one lean, green, music-playing machine, and he’s about to prove it!

On October 27th, “En Concert” will officially be released — a film chronlocing one leg of Johnson’s 2008 “Sleep Through the Static” tour.

Here are the Razz we were pretty much obsessed with the Static tour, thanks to their use of biodiesel buses, coaches and generators and their above and beyond recycling and composting efforts.  The tour also offset more than 4,000 metric tons of carbon through donations to renewable energy sources and programs that save jungles and forests.

About the film, director Emmett Malloy said:

“Getting a shot of him is kind of similar to getting a shot of the Loch Ness Monster; it’s a rare occurrence. Surprisingly, he let our cameras really join him on this tour. I just knew that I better keep a guitar or surfboard in his hands, because with either of those weapons he seemed to never know we were there.”

Visit Jack Johnson’s website to pre-order a deluxe edition of the film, a CD and a 60-page booklet of photos from the tour. All the proceeds will go to fund the Kokua Hawaii Foundation and the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation – an organization that supports environmental, art, and music education around the globe.

Only Jack Johnson could create a song about the recycling that’s not only easy on the ears, but worth repeat listening. His “The 3 R’s” song off of the Curious George soundtrack is a favorite on the green scene — so it’s no surprise that someone has already remixed it for the tween scene.

Mitchel Musso — film and television actor, singer and rapper, who is best known for his role as Oliver Oken in Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana — has released his new video for ‘The 3 R’s”. It’s got a groovier beat, rap vocals, and a teen gloss over that we dig — because, hey, kids will watch this and hopefully understand the message. That, or just swoon over Musso. Having lived in Florida for the first 18 years of my life, I have a special appreciation for the glory that is an awesome beach! Therefore, I am extra pleased as punch to hear that a slew of eco-minded celebs are auctioning off their shoes for the Surfrider Foundation – an organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.

We’re big fans of Donavon Frankenreiter here on the Razz — mainly because he’s got a kick-back, relax, crack open a Corona-type vibe that’s reminiscent of Jack Johnson. Actually, the comparison is appropriate since these two are good friends and surfers — with Donovan having rented a home from Johnson’s parents for a time in Hawaii.

Anyways, we’re also happy to spotlight him here because of the work he does on behalf of organizations like the Surfrider Foundation and Surf Aid. In a recent interview, he expressed he stressed the importance of having sponsors that give back to the environment. “If they are a surfing company first,” he said, “Then wherever we are able to give back to the environment, we should do so.”

Jack’s got demands. Contractual ones, as a matter of fact. USA Today reports that Jack’s contracts stipulate that event organizers must compost and recycle at least 50% of the waste at his shows and buy carbon dioxide offsets to cover his shows’ energy use. Talk about star power!

He also likes to keep the fans involved. To do so, he started allatonce.org to get people going green–and to reward them with free downloads. Wouldn’t it be amazing if every musician went that far?

The Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, is partnering with lovely Jack to raise some much-needed funds for Mother Earth’s waves. To do this, they’re offering a $45 donation deal which lands you a membership plus Jack’s new CD Sleep Through the Static, a hot Rise Above Plastics (RAP) SIGG bottle, and a chic RAP tote bag.

So what’s new in Jack’s green world? These days the singing sensation is advocating the use of homemade rain barrels to collect water for reuse around the house. Jack recently appeared on Susty to talk about these water-savers and how he’s used them to not only lighten his footprint, but teach his children about conservation. But hey don’t take my word for it…take it away Jack!

The Daily Green recently released a list of ten not-to-be-missed eco-friendly music tours this summer.

Radiohead is demanding that anyone on tour with them use water flasks. Doing everything they can think of to be environmentally friendly, they use bio-fuel in their buses, refuse to use airfreight, and their opening act, Liars, says “Plastic anything is like contraband.” Sounds like a good policy to me!

Jack Johnson, one of my fave green guitarists, has his own “eco village” at every venue he plays at. He keeps water efficient showers backstage, recycles on location with biodegradable bags, and even has leftover food sent to local food banks. Keep rocking, Jack.

Sometimes musicians will ask for the damndest things while on tour. Last July, Barbara Streisand’s odd request for 120 bath-sized towels backstage at all times came to light. Then there’s Cher’s request for a private “wig room”. And let’s not forget that all of Willie Nelson’s concert engagements must be “smoke free”. Uh huh.

Thankfully, Jack Johnson’s concert rider is a bit more sane — and actually beneficial. According to the Star Tribune, the 33-year old musician requests fluorescent lightbulbs and water efficient showers backstage, separate bins for waste and recycling (with biodegradable bags), an eco-crew to check tire air pressure for attendees and that all leftover food be donated to local food banks.

Cool, right? The rest of Jack’s tour policies are also created with sustainabiliy in mind — and he takes pride in making each year greener than the previous. Last week, he performed an impromptu two-set concert out in the tour’s green village — where several non-profits were setup. Even though the real concert was three hours away, Jack took time to thank his fans and play some tunes anyways.

On polluted beaches and becoming inspired to help:

I started spending every morning at my local beach. And on days when it rains, we usually have to spend anywhere from a day to three days — four days on a hard rain — outside of the water because the coastline is so fucked up. [The coastlines are] just so polluted that you’ll get sick. And it made me realize, we are some dirty people. Humans are becoming a bacteria over the surface, and I want to do what we can to clean this up. So I joined the Surfrider Foundation and wanted to give my attention, give my time, give my money to an organization that’s protecting our coastline.  

On those he respects working to reduce the impact of music on the environment: 

Certainly Guster for what they were doing — Adam [Gardner, Guster guitarist/singer], for starting Reverb with his wife. For someone who spends a lot of time on the road and realizes, “Hey, we can do this — it’d be easy to do this.” Definitely can respect that. 

I love the idea of what Jack Johnson did with his studio, running it off of solar energy and wind energy and building a studio right in the middle of L.A. out of all-recycled materials: recycled wood and the walls are stuffed with used pairs of blue jeans as sound baffling. Saving money and using old parts to put that together, I can most certainly respect that.
