We posted way back last summer that John Krasinski’s then-upcoming project, untitled at the time, was going to be very, very green. The eventually titled Away We Go turned out to be a groundbreaking green production as promised. Not only did producers utilize innovative ways to reduce carbon emissions and their environmental impact, but they also took detailed notes and documented the entire process, releasing it to the public as Away We Go: A Pilot Study of Sustainable Film Production Practices.

The crew worked closely with Green Media Solutions and TerraChoice to create what executive producer Mary-Jo Winkler calls “the most detailed carbon footprint measurement anyone has ever done on a film.” Editor of Filmmaker Magazine, Scott Macaulay, writing for Focus Features’ website, says that the report (and I don’t doubt it) “will help film producers everywhere as they assess the impact of their own future productions.”

The solutions they came up with for Away We Go ranged from using biofuels and hiring carbon accountants to distributing reusable water bottles and sourcing local produce. For all of the specifics in the four main areas of energy, transportation, catering/craft/water, and waste, check out the entire report at Green Media Solutions.

If everyone pledges to green even one simple aspect of their daily routines, such as walking to work, shopping with a reusable bag, or taking a shorter shower, together we can make a difference in our own lives and impact the environment.”

The ‘Green Your Routine’ campaign will feature celebs talking about what they do in their own lives to be more eco-friendly, and the line-up of participating talent is huge! Just a handful of the stars who will be giving their tips include John Krasinski of The Office, Jane Krakoswki and Jack Brayer of 30 Rock, Masi Oka and Zachary Quinto of Heroes, Tori Spelling, Tiki Barber, Debra Messing, Ann Curry, Meredith Viera, Al Roker and the ladies of Lipstick Jungle.

Be sure to tune into NBC next week, Nov. 16th – 23rd, to catch all the celeb tips and green programming! Check out the whole list over at NBC ‘Green is Universal’.

John Krasinski’s new yet-to-be titled film (though the name Farlanders has been tossed around) is yet another example of Hollywood productions going the extra mile to reduce their environmental footprint. The comedy, which stars The Office’s John Krasinski — as well as an ensemble cast with the likes of Maya Rudolph, Jeff Daniels, and Maggie Gyllenhaal — follows the journey of an expectant couple, as they travel the U.S. in search of a place to put down roots and raise a family.

Here are some highlights of what the production is doing behind the scenes to go green:

>>Everything waste-related on set was separated into five categories: bottles, cans, plastic, compost, and paper

>>Production cameras were equipped with 3-perf film, which uses 25% less stock and chemicals in the manufacturing and processing. All costume cleaning used low-energy washers and dryers. Sound production used rechargeable batteries, while publicity stills will be distributed online instead of in paper press kits.

>>A large portion of the trucks carrying the cast and crew ran on Biodiesel 5, a petroleum diesel fuel blend that runs on recycled/collected cooking grease from local restaurants.

>>Catering used only organic food sourced from local suppliers, as well as biodegradable and recyclable diningware. SIGG bottles on set helped keep more than 10,000 plastic water bottles out of landfills.
