Television journalist Bob Woodruff hit The Daily Show last night to talk about a new ABC special premiering tonight (9PM EST) called Earth 2100. The basic gist of the program is that over the next hundred years the “perfect storm” of population growth, resource depletion and climate change could converge with catastrophic results. The two-hour program gives us the worst case scenario and follows a character named Lucy (born in the year 2009) as she guides us through the collapse of civilization over the next century. Called “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All” — the one-hour special will include Stephen singing “Little Altar Boy” and Bing Crosby and David Bowie’s “Little Drummer Boy.” Besides Nelson, Colbert will also be joined by Toby Keith, Jon Stewart, John Legend, Feist and Elvis Costello to sing Christmas songs that were penned by Daily Show executive producer David Javerbaum and composed by Adam Schlesinger. The entire episode will take a place in faux log cabin — complete with a bear lurking outside and stockings by the fireplace, one labeled “Stephen,” the other “Colbert.”

“I had a clear, clear command to everyone involved: ‘No cynicism,’” said Colbert in a recent interview. “We’re not mocking Christmas specials. We’re doing MY Christmas special. And that was the aesthetic we tried to bring into it. Like, we’re really doing this. I want people to see this every year.”

Costume pieces from the special are being auctioned to benefit Feeding America, and a percentage of the DVD proceeds will also go to the charity. Sounds like a wonderful — and hopefully hilarious — Christmas celebration. Look for it this Sunday at 10pm on Comedy Central. Yes, this Sunday. For some reason, it’s now never too early to celebrate the holidays.

“[Sarah Palin] is like Jodie Foster in the movie Nell, ” Stewart continued. “They just found her, and she was speaking her own special language.”

“Have you noticed how [Palin's] rallies have begun to take on the characteristics of the last days of the Weimar Republic? In Florida, she asked ‘Who is Barack Obama?’ Hey, lady, we just met YOU five f-ing weeks ago.”

All money raised from the event went towards research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative neurological disease.

After an only mildly successful stint as the host of the Oscars, Stewart is putting on his master of ceremonies hat (it’s blue with feathers) once again for the second Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education.

The celebrity infused fundraiser will help raise money for schools and educational programs for autistic children and adults. The last benefit was held in October of 2006 and raised more than $2.6 billion. THAT IS NOT A TYPO PEOPLE!!! 2.6 BILLION!!!!! [Ed note: Actually, that is a typo. $2.6 billion? The sourced article was a bit too generous, though we'd love to believe it true. Actual amount was $2.5 million.]

This year the Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education will take place on April 13th at the Beacon Theater in New York and will also air live on Comedy Central at 8 pm EST. You can expect performances by Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler. And appearances by Jonah Hill, Matthew Broderick, Kevin James, Rosie O’Donnell and Susie Essman.

The Oscars can add one more eco-friendly highlight to their list: energy conservation. People either had their televisions turned off or were glued to Big Brother 9 on CBS (Dear. God.) as initial ratings suggest this was the least-watched Academy Awards show ever. According to Nielsen, 21.9 million people tuned in. Down from the 33 million from last year. John Travolta’s quip last night on the Oscars that his plane was double-parked out back didn’t land too well as a joke. Less funny was the fact that he actually flew himself home after the ceremony. We’re thinking this carbon sasquatch probably took his Boeing 707. Next year, can we just video conference the guy in?

Though we’re all pretty sure Angelina Jolie is pregnant with her and Brad Pitt’s second biological child (they have three adopted children), sources are saying that the star may sell the confirmation to a publication for charity. Jolie has been highly involved in driving awareness for displaced refugees in Iraq; having recently completed a humanitarian mission to the country for the UN.
