Last week’s Grey’s Anatomy episode titled “Life During Wartime” addressed the issues and ethics involved in animal testing. As one Ecorazzi readers writes, she was pleased to see some animal advocacy played out amidst the sex, lies, and drama of the series. Check out her thoughts below:

Last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy started with a disclaimer about animals not being harmed during that episode — and being a vegan, it totally had my attention. Anyways, cut to a few scenes later and one of the attending doctors is hosting a skills workshop for the residents and interns using “live tissue”, aka pigs. The attending then goes on to stab the six pigs in the chest and tells the doctors to “practice their skills” by saving the pigs. Katherine Heigl’s character refuses and walks out of the workshop and for the remainder of the episodes voices her opinion about animal cruelty.

She has a few confrontations with the attending aka “the slaughterer” should not and don’t need to be used as guinea pigs…no pun intended. They never make mention of her character being or becoming vegan, however it makes me happy that clearly someone involved with the show (maybe the strong willed Heigl herself) definitely has a soft spot for animal rights and wanted to get the message out there. So through the drama, sex, lies and medicine came a little animal advocacy.

Thankfully the pigs were fake, and in the show they were saved, but sadly euthanized afterward.

Besides being beautiful, talented and super smart, Heigl has a soft spot for animals and isn’t afraid to speak up!

The National Enquirer is reporting that on a recent trip to Mexico, the Grey’s Anatomy star confronted a local fisherman who had recently caught a yellow-finned tuna. Acting quickly, Heigl offered the man $100 to put the fish back into the water. The offer was declined and it was only after the star doubled the cash that the fisherman agreed. After the fish was thrown back, Heigl said, “Thanks, I hate to see anything die.” Pretty ballsy, Kat!

What do you think Ecorazzi readers? If dough wasn’t an issue would you have the courage to confront a fisherman mid-act. Chime in and share your thoughts!

We haven’t had a good celebrity litter bug story since Kate Bosworth ticked off Orlando Bloom in 2006 at a green music festival in Japan. Back then, the actress had just finished supporting an environmental rally up on stage when she reportedly threw some garbage and a cigarette butt onto the ground. Bloom blew up at her — but Bosworth told him that since nobody saw, it was all good.

Unfortunately for Katherine Heigl, when she recently threw her cigarette butt on the ground (no less than 10ft. from a garbage can at that!), a police officer biked over and told her to pick it up. From the Star,

“The officer told Katherine to pick up the butt and throw it away in the trash, 10 feet away,” the source says. “He added that he’d fine her next time he catches her tossing trash on the sidewalk.”

Nice! I’ve always wondered if anyone honestly ever enforces those litter laws. Good to see LAPD’s finest are up to the task. Now if Heigl would just drop that smoking habit in the first place, cigarette butts would no longer be an issue.

Seriously, it’s nasty.
