I know it’s uncouth to tell people who you voted for, but I just had to vote for Magpie after last year’s big furry let down. You broke my heart Maggie, you broke my heart!

Luckily the HSUS has released a report showing that the fur industry  makes enormous energy investments to run their fur factory farms and tanneries — including using a slew of gasoline-burning vehicles and a laundry list of toxic carcinogenic chemicals.

So Mags recently teamed up with Fisher-Price to help promote their Precious Planet Collection– a new wildlife themed set of baby gear and newborn toys. Sounds pretty good right? Keep reading…

The event was held at the Central Park Zoo, and to show they care, Fisher-Price donated $250,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Society — an organization that “saves wildlife and wild lands” through “careful science, international conservation, education, and the management of the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks.”  In other words — they manage zoos. 

A Fisher-Price rep said: ”We see our zoo partners doing a terrific job of connecting children to nature and animals – developing what they hope will be a lifelong passion for conserving animals and their habitats.”

Now zoos are a very touchy thing for people concerned with animal welfare. Thanks to wonderful books like Thanking The Monkey, we’ve learned that “conservation” is often a very loose term for animal prison and that profit is generally more important than welfare. 

Moreover, in 2005 Fisher-Price embarked on a branding program with several national zoos, many of which made In Defense of Animal’s Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants list. Fisher-Price currently partners with: Brookfield Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, San Francisco Zoo, San Diego’s Wild Animal Park Zoo, the San Diego Zoo, Toledo Zoo, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, the Bronx Zoo, Phoenix Zoo and the Buffalo Zoo.

Our week started on Sunday, with the Carrie Fisher-hosted Obama Pajama Party, a benefit for the Pajama Program, an organization that puts toasty PJs into the hands of needy children throughout this great land of ours. Among the celebs we bumped into included Bruce Cohen, the producer of Milk and TV’s reigning prince of deadpan, Mo Rocca. Last night, inauguration eve, we headed over to the National Portrait Gallery for the second Green Gala in as many nights. This one, hosted by Vice President Al Gore himself, featured performances by Will.i.am, Maroon 5 (whose lead singer, Adam Levine, is pictured here, Melissa Etheridge and John Legend. Tonight’s big shindig is the Creative Coaltion ball, with a glittering guest list, including Anne Hathaway, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, Sting, Maggie Gyllenhaal and a host of others. This past Wednesday, Maggie Gyllenhaal joined Duracell in announcing the winners of their 2008 “Duracell Holiday Ambassadors” — kids ranging in age from six to 15 years that will help spread joy to hospitalized children in local communities.

After the introductions, Gyllenhaal joined the ambassadors in hand-delivering Duracell batteries and Mattel toys to the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian. Here’s how it went: I see this picture of Maggie wearing what looks to me like real fur so I post and ask for your help identifying it. We get tons of comments/emails from people weighing in on the matter — including people from the HSUS who say with 90 percent accuracy that it IS real fur. Ecorazzi’s own contributer, Steph, finds out where it’s from –Louis Vuitton — and we announce in an update that it IS real fur. Tired yet? Keep reading.

Then, one of our commenters goes on to the Louis site and reads the official description which says, “FAUX-FUR.” I go online, find the exact page she was looking at and confirm that it indeed says “FAUX-FUR.” So I call Chloe Jo over at GirlieGirlArmy (who’s skeptical) and Ecorazzi posts an update saying that Maggie was indeed wearing FAUX.  PETA ends up covering it on their blog and everyone is happy with Maggie for not wearing the real stuff.

AND THEN THIS MORNING HAPPENS!

We get an email from a reader saying, “You guys must be blind, it says FOX fur, not FAUX fur.” I go back to the site where I read faux-fur and now it says FOX fur. Now I can’t really make any accusations here, but I’m going to say with 99.8 percent accuracy that when me and our readers checked the Vuitton site last week it most definitely said FAUX-FUR, not FOX-FUR. I’d bet my year’s salary on it! SO WTF? Was their a typo on the Louis last week? I guess we’ll never know.

For now it’s safe to say that it IS REAL FOX FUR, which means we’re all a little pissed and somebody has some serious explaining to do. So write it up, mark it down and charge the crime — Maggie Gyllenhaal WAS WEARING REAL FUR!!!!!

Wearing my proud NO FUR pin, I navigated through the crowd of beautiful people and munched on some delicious vegan hors d’oeuvers while listening to the DJ talents of super-model extraordinaire, Agyness Deyn. Dear Agyness, will you marry me?

Because gawking is creepy, I took a break from staring at Ms. Deyn and chatted it up with New York City’s very own discerning brute, Joshua Katcher and vegan shoe designer to the stars – Elizabeth Olsen. Olsen is the next big thing in vegan shoes and you’re gonna be hearing a lot more about her on Ecorazzi very soon.

Chatting all things vegan can make a boy thirsty, so I headed to the bar where I ran into the talented crew from SuperVegan.com and promised, promised, promised to attend one of their Vegan Drinks events before the year was over! We also gave love to some of our friends from the Farm Sanctuary and dished about their SUPER EXCITING winter event coming up in just a few weeks (more on that later today). Before the evening was over we made sure to say hello to America’s Next Top Activist, Nigel Barker, who’s screening of A Sealed Fate we’ll be attending next week! You guys have to check that out! Finally, I made a quick call to Chloe Jo, the General of Girlie Girl Army ,and gossiped about the whole Maggie Gyllenhaal fur controversy. Oh, jeez!

I’m don’t mean to be cheesy here (because we all know cheese ain’t vegan), but I gotta a little vaclempt being around so many compassionate people who had all come together for something truly important – a commitment to fur-free fashion.

Now I don’t want to be quick to judge here — I mean Maggie did host the eco-friendly catwalk during LA Fashion Week – but that outfit looks pretty real to me. But it can’t be, right? I mean this is the same woman who fought poverty with a designer necklace and even kicked off the Climate Matters video contest. Should, could, would the Magster actually wear real-fur?

I repeat: Maggie was NOT wearing fur. We send our apologies to the cruelty-free actress and thank her for not supporting the fur-industry. We owe you one, Mags!]

Maggie Gyllenhaal is no stranger to Ecorazzi — having graced these pages supporting climate change organizations, organic cloth diapers, charities, and other worthy initiatives. Now, we can also place her under ethical fashion due to recent hosting gig at the eco-friendly catwalk dubbed “Fashionably Natural”.

Used as the opener to kick off LA’s Spring ‘09 Fashion Week, the event highlighted spring collections crafted from all-natural and environmentally responsible textiles. Four new green designers were introduced by Maggie, including Brigid Catiis, Popomomo, The Battalion and Velvet Leaf.

“I didn’t know much about this at all until SoyJoy asked me to do this,” Gyllenhaal told ET. “I kind of thought that eco-friendly clothes meant misshapen hemp sweaters – you know, from like 1992 or something. I would not have hosted that fashion show.”

Obviously, Maggie has now come around after witnessing the beautiful clothes on display at SoyJoy’s Fashionably Natural.

This October, the top 10 videos will be featured during a Washington, D.C.-based event for the media, Congress and both presidential campaigns. These top videos will also be broadcast to millions via Link TV, FSTV, and online. “We know Americans are inspired to take climate action; they’re already taking steps everyday,” said actress and Climate Matters juror Maggie Gyllenhaal. “I’m excited to see what people create.”

Gyllenhaal will be joined by Leila and Nadia Conners, the producers/directors of The 11th Hour — as well as a host of other entertainment producers and environmental advocates in juding the entries.
