“Just to let you know that Martin Sheen has signed on supporting the Capitol Climate Action in D.C. tomorrow, Monday March 2nd. at the Capitol Power Plant.”

If this were any other celebrity, we’d call that a pretty lame act of endorsement — but we know Sheen is genuine in his support and would definitely be there if he could. The guy has been arrested an incredible 65 times for his political activism in non-violent protests.

In D.C.? Got warm clothes? Hit the protest at the Capitol Power Plant right now!

Almost a year ago, Ecorazzi heard a rumor that Captain Planet was coming back with a live-action movie. This of course made me stupidly happy as I was a huge fan of the show in my younger days! But just a month after we got our hopes up, the whispers were proved false and the world shed a collective tear. But wait!

While Captain Planet still might be on hiatus from filming any NEW episodes, for the next 12 months, the Mother Nature Network will unveil more than 20 episodes of this classic cartoon as well as some pretty rad never-before-seen bonus footage.

We mentioned earlier that stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Martin Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan, Sting, Jeff Goldblum and many more had all provided their voices for the original series — and this was waaaayyyy before saving the planet was thought of as cool.

Check out the clip below and make sure you visit the Mother Nature Network for some upcoming Captain Planet awesomeness!

I think the initial response by Paris Hilton to John McCain’s pairing her with Barack Obama was amusing and well done. Then, she released a second clip plugging her candidacy with Martin Sheen — and the joke was old. Now, with this latest third music video, I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that election season is finally coming to an end.

Adding to the pain of a terrible song, we also get a glimpse of a pink Cadillac Escalade Hybrid — which receives a dismal 20mpg on the highway and is far from the green statement so many assume it to be. But hey, at least Paris also suggests that we ratify the Kyoto Treaty right away. Moving on…

Here comes another environmentally-themed film. This time, instead of killer plants or deadly bacteria we’ve got something rooted in actual events.

Back in 1984, a chemical spillage in Bhopal, India killed almost 15,000 people. It is frequently cited as one of the world’s worst industrial disasters — and even today, more than 100,000 people have permanent injuries as a result. Groundwater around the area continues to be contaminated — and nobody is exactly sure what to do in regards to a cleanup, even more than 20 years later.

Perhaps a movie about the event will kick someone into action?

News today is that Sienna Miller is out and Mischa Barton is in for the lead role in Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain. Barton will play a young rickshaw driver who starts working in a sweatshop chemical plant. Actor/Activist Martin Sheen is also slated star. IMDB is calling for a release this year — but with Barton taking over for the lead so late, we’re guessing that will be moved back. More details here.

Can we all just agree that Martin Sheen is badass? Can we? Please? Lets.

The University of Notre Dame (see also: that movie about Rudy) announced yesterday that they will be honoring Martin Sheen for his humanitarian work with the ‘Laetare Medal’ at a ceremony on May 18th.

You might remember Sheen as Mr. President on The West Wing, but his work goes far beyond the screen. The 67-year-old actor has been arrested for taking part in non-violent demonstrations against various U.S. military policies and has donated money and time to such causes as the alleviation of poverty and homelessness, human rights for migrant workers and environmental protection.

University president, Rev. John I. Jenkins said: “He has used that celebrity to draw the attention of his fellow citizens to issues that cry out for redress, such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, the killing of the unborn and capital punishment”.

So from everyone here at Ecorazzi, we send our congrats on being recognized for your lifetime commitment to improving this world. Martin Sheen you are officially badass!

In the wake of Hayden Panettiere helping shed fresh attention on Japan’s dolphin slaughter, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is casting off to confront a Japanese Whaling Fleet. The organization, which has the backing of celebrities such as Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, and Pierce Brosnan is leaving Melbourne, Australia later this week to monitor and antagonize the Japanese. From the article,

“SSCS is repeating actions from last year. Paul Watson, captain of the SSCS ship last year, threatened to ram Japanese whalers with a giant “can opener” attached to his ship’s bow. This threat was not followed through, but society members tossed foul smelling chemicals onto the whalers’ ship decks and fixing steel plates onto the blood drain of the fleet’s factory ship.

Vasic said the organization would stop at almost nothing to help save the whales from the Japanese fleet. Vasic said: ‘Everything is on the table as long as it’s non-violent. I would rule nothing out.” He added: When we show up, the fleet tends to go on the run because of our reputation. When we’re pursuing them at high speed, they can’t hunt.’”

Japan continues to hunt whales under the guise of using such actions to study their habits. In reality, the meat generally ends up on dinner tables and is a lucrative trade for the country. Environmental group Greenpeace will also send a ship to monitor the fleet. We wish them luck in their efforts.
