Bernadette Peters To Sign Broadway Barks Book On July 12th

Filed under: animals, books, events, events: nyc, products, theater — parrish @ 10:12 am

A couple months ago Ecorazzi told you that two-time Tony Award winning actress Bernadette Peters, along with tons of other big Broadway stars, would be participating in the 10th annual Broadway Barks event to raise money and awareness for New York City dogs living in shelters. Well, Bernadette has taken it a step further by publishing a children’s book by the same name (Broadway Barks) and will sign copies next month at the Broadhurst theater.

Broadway Barks tells the story of Kramer, a down-on-his-luck dog who after being abandoned follows a woman home from the park and finds a whole new life.  The book was released in late April and features illustrations by Liz Murphy and a CD with an original song penned by Peters herself.  Proceeds from the sales benefit Broadway Barks, the charitable organization co-founded by Peters and good friend Mary Tyler Moore.

The book signing will take place at 12:30 PM on July 12th at the Broadhurst Theater, shortly preceeding the Broadway Barks event which begins at 3:30 in Shubert Alley. About Broadway Barks, Peters says: ”Our work is bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer have to euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping animals when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal — the elevation and continued welfare of animals in our society.”

So if you live in NYC make sure you stop by the Broadhurst Theater and Shubert Alley on July 12th with your copy of Broadway Barks and help improve the lives of a few lovely shelter dogs.

“Broadway Barks” Announces 10th Annual Pet Adoption Benefit

Filed under: green and famous — parrish @ 9:56 am

barks1.jpgHow much is that doggy in the window? The one with the waggily tail? I’ll tell you how much: TOTALLY FREE!!!!

It’s just been announced that Broadway Barks, Broadway’s annual adopt-a-pet benefit, will be held on July 12th at Shubert Alley in New York City. Broadway Barks was started 10 years ago by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore to promote the adoption of shelter animals.

Each year, the Broadway Barks fundraiser features an auction of celebrity autographed memorabilia as well as celebrity presentations of pets from animal shelters. In the past, celebrities such as David Hyde Pierce, Audra McDonald, Angela Lansbury, Harry Hamlin and Bebe Neuwirth pitched in to help raise awareness.

Bernadette Peters stated, “It’s bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer have to euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping animals when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal — the elevation and continued welfare of animals in our society.”

Make sure to visit Broadway Barks to learn how you can get involved! Also, visit Shubert Alley on July 12th to meet some of your favorite Broadway stars and find a new four-legged friend. I’ll be there all day, so if you stop by, make sure to say HELLO to your beloved Ecorazzi blogger!

Celebrity Bel-Air Pet Shop Closed For Selling Unlicensed Dogs

Filed under: animals, not green — parrish @ 11:10 am

Pets of Bel Air, a popular celebrity puppy emporium, has been exposed for operating without a license for over 3 years. The Humane Society of the United States lead the investigation and officially closed down the store yesterday afternoon for selling puppies from unlicensed mills, for at least $1,000.

The problem with these mills is that without a license there are no rules to govern how they treat their pets. Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States stated, “Often, they’re run by farmers who raise soybeans and corn, and this becomes another, more lucrative cash crop for them. It often becomes a dominant source of income because no money is spent on the care of these dogs.”

Pets of Bel Air is famous for their celebrity pooch selling skills, and just recently provided Britney Spears a yorkie and Paris Hilton a Chihuahua. Other celebrities like Alicia Silverstone, Sarah Mclachlan and Mary Tyler Moore all get warm fuzzies for helping spread good examples by buying rescued dogs from local shelters. Plus, we all know I kinda have a crush on Alicia Silverstone.

If you’re looking to adopt a new pet this holiday season, I recommend going to PetFinder.com and browsing through some adorable, rescued puppies that could all use some serious holiday snuggle time.
