It’s slated to star none other than the often scruffy Matthew McConaughey as the always scruffy,  always buzzed George Hayduke and Richard Dreyfuss as mentor-type Doc Sarvis. While the exact casting choices haven’t been posted officially, one trade site has also included Elisabeth Shue, John Goodman and Jack Nicholson on their list along with Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke directing.

As a big fan of McConaughey and a really big fan of Edward Abbey (though Desert Solitaire is my personal favorite) I’m looking forward to this idea, but it looks like I might be one of the few. Eco eyes will be on them so let’s hope they make some green choices and heed some of Abbey’s words. And omit his excessive beer can tossing. (Edit: Sorry for any confusion about this remark, what I meant to convey was that they should “omit his excessive beer can tossing” (read: litter) from the production itself, not from the story. I hope that the production goes green and also remains true to Abbey’s content.)

As we’ve mentioned previously, Roberts joins other stars like Matthew McConaughey and Orlando Bloom in conserving water by avoiding showers. I personally have nothing against it — but can attest to being in the company of some people that truly do smell; natural oils aside.

So, here’s the question of the day:

Having lived in Florida for the first 18 years of my life, I have a special appreciation for the glory that is an awesome beach! Therefore, I am extra pleased as punch to hear that a slew of eco-minded celebs are auctioning off their shoes for the Surfrider Foundation – an organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. 

The Barefoot Wine Rescue Project is a part of eBay’s Giving Works program and will feature shoes donated by Jack Johnson, Cameron Diaz, Matthew McConaughey, Kelly Slater, Sophia Bush, Andrew Keegan and many more!

“Barefoot Wine is committed to helping make beaches ‘barefoot-friendly’ through the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project,” said Jeremy Soine of Barefoot Wines. “We’re donating 100% of the proceeds from this charity auction to support the Surfrider Foundation’s ongoing efforts to keep our world’s beaches healthy for generations to come.”

This week, PETA’s keeping up the momentum with pleas to Heidi Klum to use her star power and refuse to wear Armani after she, like Close, sported a design from the company at the Emmy’s. A letter has also been sent to Kristin Chenoweth of Pushing Daisies fame, another Emmy Armani-Wearer.

Do you think that these stars will pledge to go Armani-free until the company itself goes fur-free? Your guess is as good as mine. But one thing’s for sure: if you’re famous and you’re wearing Armani, you’re gonna get a letter from PETA. When PETA’s not happy, nobody’s happy!

The second annual Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF) in Abu Dhabi is going green this year. Festival director Nashwa al-Ruwaini says, “This programme showcases films whose themes are about the environment and humanity’s place in the world.” The festival will run October 10-19.

Google, which essentially has the economy of a small country, has answered Al Gore’s call to come up with a plan to reduce the United State’s dependence on fossil fuels. Google says the plan would cost about $4.4 trillion but over a 22-year period would save a net of about $1 trillion and create new jobs. Highlights include vehicle mileage being raised from 31mpg to 45mpg, complete replacement of electricity generation using coal and oil in favor or renewables, and Increasing use of plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars. Lopez raised a whopping $127,000 and finished the intense running, cycling and swimming competition in two hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds. I don’t really know triathlons… is that good?

After Jennifer crossed the finish line she told the crowd: “Thank you guys so much. This is an amazing day.I feel really great and so glad I finished and that I made it out of the water but more amazing than that, I feel really great that we raised $127,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and hopefully it’ll go to good use.”

The actress wasn’t the only famous face participating in the event, beef obsessed Matthew McConaughey also competed. By the end of the day, the Nautica Malibu Triathlon raised a total of $950,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. WOW!

Though the lawsuit hasn’t been settled (or dismissed) yet, Kate Hudson is still promoting her new hair-care line, David Babaii for WildAid. Not only is the actress actually using herself to test the products (Go Kate!), she’s also filming ads out in the bush with WildAid workers. “There was a black rhino right in front of our hut. It is one of the top on the endangered species list. It was so sad. It was all alone,” she said.

While the Atkins meat frenzy hasn’t completely left the planet yet, there are plenty of celebs who use veggie means when they’re dieting. Look for the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid to feature on J.J. Abrams new television series, Fringe. While she’s investigating strange occurrences around town, the character of FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, played by actress Anna Torv, will drive the green vehicle. “J. J. Abrams is a big environmentalist, and he wanted to have a hybrid vehicle on the show,” Ross Mackenzie of Ford Global Brand Entertainment said. “Since Olivia Dunham is the lead character, the Escape Hybrid was a nice fit.” [Read more...]

Back in July, Matthew McConaughey took a gig promoting beef for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). “We are certain once consumers hear it,” said a spokeswoman, “they will recognize the new voice for its endearing quality and it will reinforce their passion for beef and the protein body benefits it provides.”

Understandably, the ad received a bit of scorn from the vegetarian community. A little late to the game, but nonetheless concerned, Pamela Anderson is now planning on addressing McConaughey — through the mail. “He is so cute, how can he do that?” she tells Daily Star Sunday. ‘I’m going to send him a letter.’

Anderson made news recently after she called Jessica Simpson a “whore and a bitch” for her “Real Girls Eat Meat” tee. Simpson later remarked on the attack by PETA and Simspon saying, “They’re all about animals,” she says. “I love animals too but I definitely eat meat. I love vegetables but I could not be a vegetarian. I wish I could but I really do like meat. And yeah, I caught a lot from that but I just wore the shirt because I thought it was funny, I didn’t know that it was going to be so offensive to so many people. Oops.”

Matthew McConaughey has put together a VIP package to auction off on Ebay to help raise funds for his j.k. livin foundation. The organization is dedicated to helping boys and girls transform into men and women through programs that teach the importance of decision making, health, education, and active living.

The package includes Matthew’s custom-made orange-and-white bike (suggested retail price: $40,000), tickets for two to a college football game in Austin, TX, and other autographed collectibles — including headshots, “If you want ‘em!” the actor quips.
