Yesterday had director M. Night Shyamalan calling housing developments “soulless”, and today brings Neve Campbell outraged and concerned over the growing exploitation of Canada’s tarsands.

The actress, who most recently starred in the made-for-tv eco-thriller Burn Up, toured the oilsands development north of Alberta to see first-hand the effects on the environment. Coming along with her for the ride was photographer Colin Finlay; whose work was featured recently in the green issue of Vanity Fair.

“I’m horrified by the pace and scale of development in the tarsands, and the weak response by our federal and provincial governments,” Campbell is quoted as saying in a Mikisew Cree First Nation press release.

“I’ll be working with ForestEthics and the First Nations to continue to raise awareness in the coming months.”

Oilsands are generally considered to be much more environmentally degrading than other resource tapping — like crude oil. The main issue opposed by groups like Greenpeace is the land damage and its ability to support forestry and farming — as well as greenhouse gas emissions, and water use. For more information, check out the main Wikipedia page here.

Part I of the eco-thriller drew 2.4 million households during its debut last night. The plot deals with Big Oil clashing with an environmentalist (played by Campbell) who’s brought on for what’s eventually revealed to be a massive greenwashing venture. I’m sure Big Oil is loving it. [Read more...]

They break it down in a handy graph (scanned in here) and also call some celebs on their hypocrisy. Most surprising? Grey’s Anatomy star Kate Walsh flew to a sustainable living event in San Diego on June 14th — in a private jet.

Neve Campbell has a new television role as an eco-warrior who wants to save the planet. I’ll watch it as long as that creepy Scream mask doesn’t show up anywhere! England’s BBC has this new drama coming out called Burn Up. The British two-parter is being filmed in Canada, where Campbell will portray Holly who works for a British Oil company’s renewable energy division. Holly is committed to creating change and doing good for the environment, but…duhm duhm duhm duhm (scary music sound) the company only hired her to greenwash their image! Bastards! Then Holly goes and falls in love with her boss at the evil oil giant. Sorry, I’m getting way too into this. (You can see our previous take on the hilarious trailer for this film here.)

Neve is into it too because she’s really worried about the environment, so much that she’s not decided yet on becoming a mom.

“I’m really not sure about having kids. Maybe I’ll shift my view in a couple of years,” she says. “People say things like, ‘You could have the child who makes a big difference to the planet, but we’re not talking about changes happening to the planet in 50 years. It’s more likely to be 20 years and we’re going to be in a mess. Part of me thinks it is not necessarily fair to bring kids into a world like that. It seems selfish to and it is something I have struggled with for the past few years.”

The BBC Press Release describes this show as a ”provocative drama set in the real-life context of climate change.” Cool.

The plot deals with Big Oil clashing with an environmentalist (played by Campbell) who’s brought on for what’s eventually revealed to be a massive greenwashing venture. The former Party of Five actress says that the message of the film is very timely — something she’s not always keen to push in film, but happy to have done in this instance.

However, while Canadian and British TV have been receptive to airing the mini-series, producers have yet to find an American network that’s interested. “Networks are sometimes afraid of these topics depending on where their politics are,” Campbell told the Canadian Press. “When you’re making a piece like this, there’s got to be balance. You want to give adequate and accurate information and not feel that it is just sensationalist.”

Let’s hope some network (ahem, Planet Green) decides to grab Burn Up. For the rest of the interview with Campbell — including why she’s disappointed in Calgary’s environmental efforts — hit the article here.

What does Party Of Five and The West Wing have in common? Well, absolutely nothing…except for the fact they both have two very eco-savvy alumni. Bradley Whitford and Neve Campbell are both involved in a new mini-series that deals with global warming, entitled, Burn Up. Campbell and Whitford agree that they joined the project because of their strong passion for the environment and the subject of global warming. In the series, Neve plays an environmentally conscious oil company worker opposite Whitford’s less than green, oil company lobbyist.

Wait a tick-Neve Campbell plays an environmentally conscious oil company worker? Something about that seems awfully strange…oh yeah, it’s the words “environmentally conscious” and “oil company” in the same sentence. In response to that little paradox, Campbell says, “(My character) figures out how to fight for what she wants and how to do that in the sense of going along with what the oil company needs for its purposes, but also trying to angle things so that she can be helpful to the environment.”

Whitford is known not only as an actor, but as an outspoken environmental and political activist. Regarding our current president, Whitford says, “George W. Bush is the worst president we have ever had at the most dangerous time we have ever had, and you can quote me on that.” Well Mr. Whitford, considered yourself quoted.

U.S.-based Alchemy Television is distributing the project globally and is already talking to American networks about acquiring the two-parter. Check your local listing for more information.
