Kate Hudson has her own organic shampoo and now Sandra Bullock has released a line of eco-friendly soy candles. Called Bessence, they’re made from plant and flower essential oils and contain no lead wicks. Even the packaging is made from organic and recycled materials. From her website,

“Every Bessence candle is poured, cleaned and packaged individually, by hand, using a specially formulated soy based wax, designed for our high fragrance levels. This meticulously crafted mixture is combined with eco-friendly 100% lead free paper wicks to produce an exquisite smelling candle that burns cleanly and evenly for up to 50 hours”

Bullock was on Oprah yesterday promoting the candles. She explained, “I started researching and you find out about lead wicks and chemicals in your candles. (Soy wax) is a renewable resource.” And Bullock is so happy with her new business, she joked that it could provide her with a second career: “(It’s) something to fall back on.”

Interested in picking some up? Prices for individual candles start at $40; votives are cheaper at $10. Jump here for more. The video from Oprah is below.

Julia Roberts Does Not Wear Deodorant. We’re Smelling A Trend Here.

Filed under: green and famous — michael @ 11:54 am

First Orlando Bloom’s natural smell came into question. Then, it was Matthew McConaughey enjoying several days in between showers. Now, Julia Roberts has admitted she doesn’t touch deodorant saying it’s “just not my thing.”

The actress was on Oprah’s Earth Day special promoting her friend’s new book “Gorgeously Green” (by author Sophie Uliano) and chatting about the small changes one can make at home to create a healthier environment.

Sophie brought out a bunch of deodorant brands and talked about the dangers of aluminum within the antiperspirant products. Roberts then told Oprah that she never wear deodorant — but will often freshen up throughout the day — whatever that means.

Check out the video below — perhaps Woody Harrelson should get her one of those crystal deodorizers.

Charlize Theron Talks About South Africa Visit On Oprah

Filed under: campaigns — michael @ 8:30 am

theron.jpgAs part of Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network, actress Charlize Theron recently visited her native South Africa to check out the mobile AIDS testing and counselling clinic her donations had created. Yesterday, on Oprah, Theron presented a video of her time spent in Kwazulu-Natal and chatted about the lasting impression the experience had on her.

“She says, ‘To see kids be able to talk that way with each other, with an adult, with a counsellor, that never happened when I grew up in this country. It’s hard because part of me feels incredibly blessed in my life and then you come here and you see people struggling, and then you see this beautiful thing which is the spirit of these people and how resilient they are and that’s the miracle.’”

Theron chatted with the kids, handed out gift bags, and assisted with the AIDS testing. The experience left her feeling grateful for the life she has, and even more determined to give back in return. She told Oprah, “Those kids have a 50 percent chance of contracting HIV and AIDS and dying from it, and that could have been my life.”

Oprah’s Big Give To Feature A Little Help From Jennifer Aniston

Oprah Winfrey’s new reality show, Big Give, is getting some help from actress Jennifer Aniston. The show — which premieres March 2nd — challenges 10 people to help change the lives of complete strangers. At the end of the challenge, the contestants will be judged on their leadership, accomplishments, creativity and presentation with one “giver” being eliminated. The judges include “world-renowned “Naked Chef” and philanthropist Jamie Oliver, NFL star Tony Gonzalez, and Malaak Compton-Rock, charity founder and the wife of comedian Chris Rock.”

Aniston will join John Travolta, Jada Pinkett-Smith, tennis legend Andre Agassi, skateboarder Tony Hawk and racing star Danica Patrick in assisting the contestants with the various challenges. Judge Jaime Oliver couldn’t be more thrilled to work with her again — after meeting her and then-husband Brad Pitt at a private dinner party he helped cook for. From the article,

“‘Jennifer’s a friend of mine, she’s a beautiful, beautiful character,’ he tells OK!. ‘She was perfect to be a part of Oprah’s Big Give because that’s her personality — she’s a beautiful, giving person. It was lovely to have her involved, to have a friend be involved in the same show as me, and she comes along to one of the shows to pat the winners on the back.’”

No doubt that as with anything Oprah touches, this 8-episode series should be a big hit. Obviously, we really love the concept of helping out others in need and having Winfrey spearhead this effort is wonderful. Let’s hope there’s another season of giving in the works.

Obama and Oprah: Oprahpalooza 2007 Kicks Off

Filed under: politics — paige @ 9:49 am

As Oprahpalooza kicked off in Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire over the weekend, it is clear that when it comes to celebrity endorsements, Obama is the man. A flood of support continues to pour in from a range of celebrities including George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Stephen Colbert, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and oh, Dreamworks (because that is what you get with the three most powerful men in Hollywood - Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen).

Other candidates have their ringers as well. Senator Hillary Clinton has recent endorsements and support from Barbara Streisand, Donald Trump, Martha Stewart and Tom Hanks. And of course, her husband former President Clinton. I mean who doesn’t want to see Bill back in the White House, especially with all of his recent socially global and climate driven initiatives. Regardless, the campaign is truly heating up and while at the end of the day it is about electing a leader based on the issues and leadership capabilities, there is no denying the magic of the “O” factor and Obama earns big strategic points on that one!

Check out the latest celebrity endorsements on The Huffington Post Fundrace 2008.

Julia Roberts And Oprah Share (RED) Gift Idea

Filed under: campaigns, shopping — paige @ 11:20 pm

20071119_115_350×263.jpgAs the holiday season heats up, so do the vast array of socially conscious products and the causes they support. While Oprah has yet to showcase her holiday “favorite things” show, she gave a sneak peak of a gift idea from friend Julia Roberts. According to the show:

Julia also has been hard at work on a non-acting project. She and Danny have designed bracelets for Emporio Armani to benefit Bono’s (RED)™ campaign—which fights HIV/AIDS in Africa. There are “boy” and “girl” bracelets, each decorated with a sketch of a tree by Danny and the words “Revolution, Evolution, Devotion,” or RED. Julia got involved when Giorgio Armani asked her to collaborate with him on his EMPORIO ARMANI (PRODUCT) RED collection.

The bracelets go on sale December 1, World AIDS Day, and will be available through the end of the year at www.emporioarmani.com. Forty percent of profits go to the (RED)™ global fund. So take a holiday gift cue from this socially conscious celeb: “Christmas is coming up,” Julia hints.
