The legendary actor, who passed away in September 2008, bequeathed over $20 million to a variety of charities focused on education, the environment, health, human services, and more. Not surprisingly, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt came in second with gifts of $13.5 million, followed by Mel Gibson ($6 million), Richard Childress ($5 million), Oscar de la Hoya ($9.5 million), and Oprah Winfrey ($2.4 million).

To be sure, the Giving Back Fund prides itself on the accuracy of their reports. To collect the date, the group “culled media reports of charitable giving by sports and entertainment professionals; reviewed PF-990 tax-forms; contacted more than 250 publicists, attorneys, agents, agencies, and managers for information about their clients; polled more than 150 charities known for their celebrity associations; and contacted all of the major sports leagues.”

The June issue of the Oprah Magazine features a cover of Winfrey (as usual) covered in a array of rescued puppies from Chicago’s PAWS Shelter. “That’s Sadie on O’s June cover, hugging my right shoulder, making her bid for a new life with me,” Oprah writes on Oprah.com. “Right before we shot the photo—at PAWS Chicago, the city’s largest no-kill humane shelter—she had licked my ear and whispered, “Please take me with you.””

PAWS has got to be tremendously happy to be featured front and center in O Magazine. Check out the issue on newstands now — or hit up Oprah’s writeup here.

After we wondered aloud why PETA was so quiet regarding Oprah’s free chicken dinner promotion with Kentucky Fried Chicken, a rep sent us this official statement from the group:

PETA was horrified and immediately wrote privately to Oprah to enquire as to whether KFC had deliberately misled her the way it has been misleading other consumers on its Web site. Seeing how strongly Oprah had publicly criticized cruelty to chickens in the food industry, PETA believes that Oprah was likely the victim of the very consumer deception practices that PETA cited in its recent complaint to the FTC about KFC. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk wrote, “I believe you had no idea that KFC has refused to take any action to stop its suppliers from scalding birds alive and breaking birds’ wings and legs during live shackling.”

This angle is definitely in line with what some commenters were saying: that Oprah’s reps were given the run around regarding the chain’s factory farming conditions. What do you think? Was Oprah deceived? Or was there simply not enough vetting on the part of her reps to make sure this move didn’t contradict her earlier critiques of animal factory farming?

While many shots have been fired from blogs and news organizations over Oprah’s decision to align herself with KFC and give away free chicken dinners, the loudest cannons of all from PETA have yet to fire. In fact, the animal rights organizations has been oddly silent on the issue — which is largely surprising considering their usual snappy media retaliations.

There are two ways to potentially look at this. One, the PR team is attempting to gracefully protest Oprah’s decision while also suffering a hit with their naming her their “2008 Person of the Year“. The marketing blitz that PETA is currently engaged in to force KFC to improve the conditions of its suppliers’ factory farms is definitely taking a direct shot from this promotion. If someone other than Oprah had done something similar, I would bet the cannons would have been firing within hours.

Which leads me to my second point: This is Oprah. One of the most powerful media personalities (and individuals in general) in the world. My guess is they’re trying to figure out how not to piss her off — which could come back to haunt the group in various ways. If they slam her, they risk the wrath of her massive audience. If they go easy on her, they risk backlash from animal rights supporters. Of course, saying nothing doesn’t necessarily help your cause either.

So far, their blog, Twitter feed, and main media release page have all been quiet. Will the real PETA please stand up?

[UPDATE: PETA has responded.]

Remember that special Oprah had last year addressing the “dark side” of chicken factory farming? The same one that helped earn her PETA’s 2008 “Person of the Year” Award? Yea, well, we don’t see a repeat performance anytime soon.

On Oprah today, the host announced that she was hooking up with Kentucky Fried Chicken to give away a free two-piece Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal to every family in America. Obviously, this is going to come as a shock to PETA — who is in the middle of a renewed campaign urging KFC to change the way its suppliers treat their chickens. Famous folks like Pamela Anderson, Sir Paul McCartney, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, The Rev. Al Sharpton, and countless others have signed on to boycott KFC.

Some will argue that this is a free meal — and in a time of economic hell, any food is good food. It just bothers me that with everything Oprah has done to bring attention to the plight of chickens and animals in factory farms, that she would approach a chain like KFC to give people a free meal. Why not give something relatively healthy like a free salad instead? Spout off below.

Of particular interest was the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” — an area of floating trash estimated to be twice the size of Texas, and in some places 90ft. deep. Oprah described it as “the most shocking thing I have seen”. You can check out a short clip from the episode over on Huffington Post, or view a clip from VBS.tv on “Garbage Island” below.

Oprah Winfrey is continuing her annual ode to Earth Day with a green-themed show spotlighting trash disposal, ocean pollution, and saving green by going green. Here’s the bit from her site:

Do you know where your trash really goes? You might think differently about garbage after you watch this show! Plus, how going green could save your family thousands.

Previous Oprah Earth Day specials have featured Julia Roberts helping out with composting (we also found out she doesn’t wear deoderant), Matt Damon speaking about reducing junk mail through an org called GreenDimes, and other guest appearances by green folks like Simran Sethi and Sophie Uliano. Knowing Oprah, there could definitely be some surprise celebrities waiting in the wings. Don’t forget to tune in!

Looks like everyone is getting caught up in the act of giving over Twitter — and we’re psyched to see it infecting more and more celebrities. As an act of solidarity and congratulations on his beating CNN to one million Twitter followers, many celebrities are jumping on to Ashton Kutcher’s call to raise money for fighting malaria. One organization in particular, MalariaNoMore, is getting massive publicity across the media waves as a result of the competition and worldwide interest.

Just a few hours ago, CNN announced that they would be matching Kutcher’s donation of 10,000 nets (the original bet was that the loser would only give 1,000 — but we’re thinking that would just look lame at this point.). Ryan Seacrest also jumped in on the 10,000 nets and made a Twitter call to Oprah and Diddy to do the same. Oprah, who just started using Twitter today, announced that she would be giving cash for $20,000 nets — something that works out to around $200K.

Should be interesting to see who else joins the fun — but with other celebrities like Hugh Jackman also using Twitter to give cash to charitable organizations, we may be witnessing the birth of a new (and powerful) cash-raising machine for Hollywood initiatives.
