Of course, you may recognize this shirt as the one made famous by Paul McCartney in his vegetarian ad for the organization back in March of 2008. “Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realized, I am killing him – all for the passing pleasure it brings me,” Paul wrote in the ad. “Something inside me clicked. I realized as I watched him fight for breath, that his life was as important to him as mine is to me”.

Want to win one and help promote the vegetarian lifestyle! Hit the fold below for more information on how to enter. (To view PETA’s full range of animal-lovin’ tees and other goods, jump here.)

You gotta love all the behind-the-scenes drama that happens in the cartoon world regarding the diets of certain characters. Last month, we had the story of Casey Kasem petitioning for Shaggy from Scooby-Doo to remain VEG. Now comes word that Paul McCartney had some push in keeping Lisa Simpson’s dinner plate meat-free. David Mirkin, executive producer for The Simpsons, told how it all went down.

“It’s actually Paul McCartney who was responsible for another permanent change,” Mirkin said. “When I asked him to do the vegetarian episode, he agreed but made me promise to keep Lisa as a vegetarian – and I was happy to comply with that because I’m a vegetarian too! Every time I see him, he always checks – and he’s always surrounded by nine or ten lawyers, so it’s quite frightening!”

As the VegetarianStar points out, perhaps Lisa’s little sister Maggie will be the next to go VEG — should she ever decide something looks better than the binky.

Well, we’ve got a upset letter coming from the British Farmers’ Union, this time in protest of Paul McCartney’s new Meat-Free Mondays campaign.

The famous singer launched the initiative this past Monday with daughters Stella and Mary and a host of other celebrities in London. “Having one designated meat-free day a week is a meaningful change that everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical issues all at once,” he said. We should care about climate change because if we don’t, we are going to leave our children and their children in a hell of a mess.”

In response, a British Farmers’ Union rep said that the initiative is “overstating” the environmental problems caused by meat manufacturing. “Diet is a lifestyle matter, and individual choices must be respected, but this campaign has a rather gimmicky air to it,” they said. “It greatly overstates the contribution that British livestock make to climate change, compared to, for example, transport where emissions have been rising rapidly in recent years.”

While the British contribution to emissions from factory farming may be low compared to other countries, they’re still a great source of environmental degradation; not to mention welfare concerns for animals. I like the idea of Meat-Free Mondays — mainly because it opens up people’s palates to the fact that not every meal need include meat. One day a week without the red has also been determined to be better for one’s health — so why not give it a shot?

For more info, check out the Meat-Free Mondays UK site.

Stella, Paul and the rest of the McCartney clan is asking everyone to do their part for the environment and drop the cruel stuff for at least one day a week.

In a video on Channel 4 news, McCartney said:

“Basically, it’s just to encourage people to not eat meat for one day in the week — Monday — when they’ve overdone it over the weekend, possibly. And the idea is that it’s very beneficial for the environment.”

Yoko Ono has also joined the campaign and is hoping that she can encourage her fans to go flesh-free as well.

Check out the video below and tell us your thoughts on Meat-Free Mondays. We think it sounds swell!

“Kanye West is the person pissing me off right now. I was at Stella McCartney’s Paris fashion show with the vice president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Paul McCartney and Kanye West. The entire time Kanye is going, ‘They need more fur in this show’. He just wouldn’t shut up about how he loved fur. I mean, he’s saying this to me, the PETA guy and Paul McCartney! I was just so grossed out by him. I’m like, ‘You’re an idiot!’ There are so many people who I think are a waste of skin and he’s up there. I should wear him. Go on, donate yourself Kanye.
Paul McCartney has written to Pamela Anderson urging the former Baywatch star to help him in promoting vegetarianism. The two-page letter goes into great detail on the effects of livestock on the planet, climate change, and health and well-being. Paul wrote: “The Food and Agricultural (FAO) brought out a major document in 2006 titled ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’ which clearly brings out a clear message that the single most effective act that any individual can currently perform to lessen the emissions of greenhouse gases is to become vegetarian or reduce meat consumption.”

Maybe I’m the only one, but, um, why send this letter to Pamela? She’s been a vegetarian since her early teens and a staunch supporter of PETA. I mean, this isn’t some kind of “Hey, we admire the work you’ve done — let’s join forces to continue it!” but more like a “Did you know?” that a non-vegetarian should be reading. Also, the letter starts of with “We are sending you this letter” but is signed only by Paul in the end. Who’s the “we” here?

I need some coffee. Check out the full letter over at Pamela Anderson’s official site.

In true HSUS style, the stars shone brightly at the 23rd Genesis Awards last week in Beverly Hills. Dedicated to ending the Canadian Seal Hunt, the GAs also presented the Wyler Award to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, for their leadership in making news on behalf of animals. The award, named after Genesis Awards founder and former Broadway headliner Gretchen Wyler, has previously been awarded to Hayden Panettiere and Sir Paul McCartney.

The usual suspects were out in full force and included Razz faves Constance Marie, who having recently given birth to a baby girl, couldn’t help but extol the virtues of veganism; the oh-so-beautiful Emily Deschanel; James Cromwell, Wendie Malick; Jennifer Coolidge; Esai Morales; Corey Feldman; and Jillian Reynolds, who reminded us to get our dogs from shelters and not pet stores. Other celebs lending their support included Gabrielle Anwar, Matt Grant, Joe Mantegna, and Victoria Stilwell.

Gorgeous ANTM judge, Nigel Barker, made hearts flutter as he strolled the red carpet, but was all business when it came to ending the Canadian Seal Hunt. “I’ve always been interested in marine biology so the Humane Society approached me last year to take over the Save the Seals Campaign from Sir Paul McCartney, and I’m very happy to do that.” And by the way, he LOVES the Razz!

Oakland Raiders star, Jarrod Cooper, was emphatic about animal shelters and volunteering. When asked if he was going to become a spokesman, Jarrod replied, “Well I’m thinking about just beating people up who don’t spay and neuter their dogs!” And that he would also be the first to whoop Michael Vick’s behind when he got out of jail! He was joking, of course!

Michael Vartan is also an impassioned supporter, especially against the atrocities committed in China. “In 2009 it absolutely shocks me that we haven’t gone to that next level in human consciousness. Events like this really help.” Heather Mills (who despite recent media reports is not the spokesperson for a new vegetarian menu at Burger King) has actively used her celebrity to campaign against the skinning of dogs and cats in China, and has just had the ban supported and passed by 27 countries. Way to go, Heather — and Burger King, if you’re listening, she’s open to the idea!

She’s a smart girl. When she came in to the fashion industry, she came in to Gucci, which is leather city.
Over the course of last year, we heard many stories about the late Linda McCartney’s frozen vegetarian food line being given a refresh with new packaging and choices. This week, that new branding is finally being revealed in an effort to “communicate the benefits of the product”. Irving Designs handled the repackaging — with Sir Paul McCartney and his daughter Mary lending a hand.

Paul came up with the new tagline ‘Food to come home to’, while Mary supplied the photography. The three new ready-meals are Thai green curry, Balti curry and Moroccan tagine.

Wha? The author quoted the site, Paris Hilton Zone that details how the socialite went veggie in 2006 — apparently after a meeting with vegan-powerhouse Heather Mills. From the website,

“Paris Hilton hasn’t eaten meat since meeting Heather Mills McCartney. The blonde star says she converted to vegetarianism after the former model, the estranged wife of Sir Paul McCartney, showed her a shocking video of animal cruelty. She said: ‘From that point I’ve never worn fur and I never will. I also haven’t eaten any meat since. I just survive on pasta and stuff like that. I was grossed out. It was disgusting.’”

As far as we can tell, Paris is no longer a vegetarian. The Vegetarian Star points out that Paris was spotted eating meat and pork back in November 2008 with then-boyfriend Benji Madden. Deceiver says she’s had some issues sticking to that whole “anti-fur” commitment as well.

Hopefully we’re wrong and Hilton is a raging vegetarian. I’d just like to clear the air on this topic before another rumors is given fresh life a la “Clint Eastwood is a vegan” fame.

Anyways, Happy Birthday Paris!
