Road-tripping from Toronto to Vancouver just got a little easier for all the vegans out there. In a huge victory for PETA, KFC Canada has agreed to offer vegan “unchicken” as a menu item at its Canadian chains. This move comes in response to PETA’s decades-long and passionate Kentucky Fried Cruelty campaign, which has spawned dramatic protests outside KFCs all around the world. PETA will now call off its Kentucky Fried Cruelty barrage in Canada, which had enjoyed the boost of celebrity endorsements from native Canadians Pamela Anderson and Ryan Gosling. Furthermore, KFC Canada has taken an additional step towards the humane by pledging to buy chickens only from suppliers who use gas as a method of slaughter, which PETA calls “the least cruel form of poultry slaughter ever developed.”

So far, 461 Canadian KFC stores have agreed to offer the vegan chicken on their menus. Meanwhile, PETA will continue its campaigns in the United States and around the world in a an effort to get the fast-food giant to make a global change for the better. The move, however, raises an interesting dilemma for us vegans: will any of us actually walk into a KFC and give them any money at all, even if it is for unchicken? Introducing vegan meat to the mass public is a great and progressive idea, and I’m willing to give a one-handed rounded of applause to KFC for taking any steps at all–after all, chicken is the entire basis of their business, so expecting them to stop selling it entirely is unrealistic–but I doubt I’ll be forking over any cash to a company whose near-unparalleled animal cruelty stretches far beyond Canada.

I mean who DOESN’T want to end genocide and crimes against humanity (well besides those taking part)? But there’s a difference between wanting to do something and taking action, and Ryan Gosling is taking action!

Yesterday Gosling spoke at the 4th Annual Center for American Progress’ national conference at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. American Progress works to improve the lives of Americans through ideas and action. Ryan also spotlighted the ENOUGH Project — an advocacy organization working to help build a permanent constituency focused on preventing genocide and crimes against humanity….which is always a good thing.

Ryan chatted about his time in Darfur and how the residents looked him, saying: ”Not like I was just some actor from Hollywood who was there to have an experience. They looked at me like I was somebody who could really do something. And I didn’t consider myself in that way. I still can see the way they looked at me.”

By the end of the night Gosling had won the audience over and revealed ”I’m single, by the way. Do what you want with that.” Okay, okay — easy Gosling. Save some for the rest of us!

KFC is offering the duo a free meal after they were caught kissing in one of it’s Florida chains.

KFC is a media whore so of course when they received the free endorsement the firm’s chief marketing officer, James O’Reilly, sent Rihanna a letter with an offer.

The letter reads: “Clearly, like our founder Colonel Sanders, you two know how to kick it up a few degrees. We could feel the heat – literally – in our restaurant that night. So much so that we’d like to invite you and Chris back to any KFC for a free meal.”

Oh and to show that KFC has a heart of gold (yeah, fools gold) O’Reilly promised to donate money to the children’s charity, Believe, if the couple would repeat their show of affection.

If you think I’m being overly harsh, visit KentuckyFriedCruelty.com and prepare for the worst. KFC is the pits and I hope that Rihanna and Chris Brown stop eating, promoting or in any way helping this hellified company!

Well at least Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling sure would, and has joined the list of celebrity do-gooders that include Bryan Adams, Pamela Anderson and Ron Jeremy urging KFC to improve the conditions in their poultry slaughterhouses. KFC is notorious for the horrific manner in which they treat their chickens and their stubbornness to make any humane changes recommended by scientists and animal activists alike.

Gosling recently composed a letter on behalf of People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals to John Bitove, who oversees KFC Canada, asking him to stop the ongoing (and unnecessary) abuse of the chickens supplied to his restaurants.

Gosling writes, ”The time is ripe to do the right thing. By adopting the basic recommendations made by PETA and scientific experts (including raising birds in a more natural manner and employing less cruel slaughter methods), you could dramatically improve the lives and deaths of chickens raised and killed for KFC Canada.”

If you’d like to find out more about the horrific conditions KFC forces their chickens to endure, visit KentuckyFriedCruelty.com and by all means boycott KFC!!

Now Ryan is taking it one step further by joining the famous and fabulous who drive happy, green machines. Yes folks, this weekend Ryan was photographed hitting the town in a black Toyota Prius and just continuing to prove that you can be both a good actor and good citizen!
