NYC Marathon: Greener Than Ever And Star-Studded

Filed under: events: nyc, green and famous, sports — dana @ 11:35 am

This year, the New York City Marathon is going to be greener than ever. The world-famous event, which crosses the starting line in Staten Island on November 2, attracts runners from all over the world, including Hollywood. With so much paper waste during the marathon, the event organizers are pushing a massive green recycling initiative.

Last year when celebs like Katie Holmes and Lance Armstrong crossed the finish line, over 22,080 pounds of cardboard and plastic were recycled! In Manhattan alone, almost four tons of discarded cups were recycled.

With more than 2,271,500 cups of water and Gatorade available for thirsty runners — like actor Ryan Reynolds — the organizers are planning to increase the recycling efforts even more. Other celebs racing include New York restaurateur Joe Bastianich and iconic soccer player Brandi Chastain.

For more information on the marathon visit the official site. Not in town for the NYC Marathon but still want to run green? Check out Runner’s World’s list of the most eco-friendly races across the country.

Anyone out there planning on running this year?

Ryan Reynolds Joins Team Fox And Sacrifices Bloody Nipples At NYC Marathon

Filed under: campaigns, donations, events, events: nyc — parrish @ 12:31 pm

How’s that for a headline?! Seriously, I sat there for a good ten minutes trying to fit all those words in one sentence.

Ryan Reynolds has just announced that he will be joining Team Fox for the New York City Marathon in support of Michael J. Fox’s foundation to fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

Now to the bloody nipple part! Years ago Ryan watched the New York City Marathon and recalls: “I saw guys coming in to finish with bleeding nipples. Why in the hell were their nipples bleeding? People were crying. People were limping, hobbling, screaming, crawling… I breathed in deeply and decided something: I’d never f—ing do that ever, ever. What in the f— were these idiots thinking? Bleeding nipples. Bleeding. Nipples.” Ouch!

Ryan, however, has changed his tune and recently told the Huffington Post: “I’m running in The ING NYC Marathon as a member of Team Fox because I support the Foundation’s urgent mission and I believe that together we can improve the lives of those living with Parkinson’s and put an end to this disease.”

Reynolds has set a fundraising goal of $55,000 and needs your help to meet it! If you’d like to support Ryan, and his nipples, logon to TeamFox.org and drop a little dough!

Scarlett Johansson’s Eco-Friendly Wedding Not So Much

Filed under: green and famous — michael @ 12:23 pm

scarlett johanssonAfter Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds quietly tied the knot last weekend on Canada’s Vancouver Island, the world was abuzz over the details of the nuptials — and the eco-friendly setting in which they took place.

The new couple chose the ecologically-conscious and exclusive Clayoquat Wilderness Resort which, according to Cele|bitchy, “specializes in weddings and honeymoons, to offer their guests plenty of outdoor activities along with a luxurious nature-themed setting.” Want a spend three nights there? Prepare to dish out $4,458.00 USD per person!

Anyways, while the location may have been environmentally-friendly — the transportation in getting there certainly was not. Unfortunately, Johansson and Reynolds chose an island that was not accessible by ferry — instead opting to fly their guests over in seven chartered sea planes. From The Inquirer,

Approximately 35 close friends and family members were instructed to gather at a specific time at Vancouver International Airport on the wedding day, the insider revealed to the Enquirer. They were not told ahead of time where they were going. They boarded chartered seaplanes - five to six guests in each of seven planes - and were whisked to a secluded resort owned by a friend of the couple on a remote island, outside of Vancouver off the coast of British Columbia. “She and Ryan picked an island that was inaccessible by ferry. The only way to get there was by seaplane.” But despite the big hush-hush, the couple succeeded in pulling off the wedding of their dreams. “It was an absolute gorgeous event,” concluded the insider.

So it looks like the choice for the wedding was less because of its eco-cred and more because, well, the owner was a friend. Either way, this small blip does little to overshadow the good works that Johansson has lent her time to over the years — the latest of which was a trip to Rwanda to draw attention to the continuing fight against AIDS in Africa.

Did Stella McCartney at least get a chance to design the dress?

The Green Picture: Ryan Reynolds’ Obama-Hybrid

Filed under: cars-houses, green and famous, politics, transport — lori @ 3:07 pm

Handsome and funny…is actor Ryan Reynolds.  (That was like a Yoda sentence.) Now, I can add smart and democratic to describe this Hollywood A-lister.  He was photographed in Beverly Hills with his Prius Hybrid which is modeling an Obama bumber sticker on its ass. That’s one hot eco-badonkadonk!

Ryan Reynolds: The “Flighty” Love Bird

Filed under: not green — parrish @ 11:06 am

One day during college, my (then) girlfriend and her roommate locked themselves in their dorm room to study for a big test. I went to school in a different state, and because I’m sweet like sugar, I surprised them by calling their favorite vegan place and arranging for some veggie nosh to be brought to them. When Ryan Reynolds wants to surprise a girl, he brings them to the nosh.

Ryan Reynolds recently told the British radio station, Heart, he once was so eager to impress his British girlfriend that he flew to London just for a sandwich. He said, “It was a few years ago, but I once flew all the way to London to have lunch with this girl I was dating. She lived in the U.K. and I was in the U.S. obviously. We had just started dating and didn’t really get to see as much of each other as we would have like to because of the distance and work and everything… so I just flew here to have lunch with her.”

Yowzers!! Ok Ryan, while Cupid is sure to give you a thumbs up for that public display of affection, Mother Earth just had a stroke, heart attack and a nose bleed. Thanks to TerraPass’ carbon calculator, I learned that a flight from Los Angeles to London dumps roughly 4,246 pounds of Co2 into the environment. Now multiply that by two, and I figure Mr. Reynolds contributed to about 8,500 pounds of Co2 being flushed into the world in just one day. That’s a lot of waste for a little sandwich and some British nookie.

Ryan, you owe us like: 3 planted forests, 2 solar panels, one windmill blowing and partridge in a saved Rainforest tree. Or you could visit TerraPass and learn some other ways to help offset your dirty, dirty omissions. And dude, maybe next time just order delivery.
