I’ll give you twenty dollars if you can tell me what’s better than a room full of super cool people celebrating compassionate fashion.

Last night, I headed down to the Bowery Hotel in NYC to celebrate the Cool vs.Cruel Fashion Competion — an annual event put on by The Humane Society of the United States and The Art Institutes that challenges students to reinterpret the works of high-end luxury designers using cruelty-free fabrics.

Three winning garments were on display, each showcasing the creativity and talent of the contestants. But the big winner of the evening was Ingrid Bergstrom-Kendrick who got first place for a piece inspired by Michael Kors’ 2009 Fall collection.

Of course a slew of famous-famous were in attendance, including: Nigel Barker, Victoria Bartlett, Samantha Ronson, and many more. We also chatted with HSUS President Wayne Pacelle, talked fashion with the Olsenhaus and Vaute Couture gang and compared notes with our pals from Treehugger.com and TheDiscerningBrute.com.

During his speech, HSUS President Wayne Pacelle said, “Tonight we are focused on ending the fur trade. We are showing a way to be warm and fashionable without hurting animals.” And show they did! By the end of the evening, it was clear to everyone that no truly fashionable person would ever wear fur!

To find out more about this important campaign, visit CoolvsCruel.org. And for goodness sake, make sure that during this (and every) winter season you stay far, far away from fur!

I received an apology too many days late from the PETA folks (the blog removal was too little too late) and today I’m pissed at the bag of flour thrown on Lindsay last night. Not because I got powdered down, but because the girl who threw it acted like an animal herself. I take that back, it’s an insult to animals to group her in with them, my dog is FAR more civilized than that person. I would have more respect for them if they didn’t use other people to get their point across. Lindsay, Mary Kate, Ashley Olsen, Anna Wintour and the rest of the targeted celebrities aren’t the problem, I’m pretty sure they’re not the only ones wearing fur, in fact, they should be appreciated by PETA for giving them a target. If it weren’t for them, who would get them press?????

I know I’m probably going to get a lot of angry emails in response, but I don’t really care. I got enough last week for no reason so I’m more than happy to ignore the nastiness after seeing what I saw last night. I’m not about to throw on a fur coat in retaliation, but had I had one within reach, I’m not sure I would have walked away from it.

p.s. when was the last time you saw an animal attack one of its own in defense of a human? hmmmmm….. that’s one to grow on!

p.s.s. i think there are plenty of families that could have used that flour for a meal. nice job, lady.”

- Samantha Ronson discussing the whole Lindsay Lohan flour incident on her blog. On Sam’s blog, she writes:

“i guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that’s really sad to me.

yes, i am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but i just think it’s frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow’s dinner than for the chef.

yup, miss piggy and chicken little may rest easy, but gay people in florida and california can no longer get married and gay couples in arkansas can’t adopt children. g-d forbid a loving family (regardless of sexual orientation) give a needy child a home! there aren’t children out there in dire need of love and shelter, no this country is thriving and no child is in need.

oh well, i guess one out of four ain’t bad!”

In response, PETA wrote a letter to Ronson saying: “Abusing animals is always wrong, and discriminating against gays is always wrong. We’ll continue to fight against the ban on gay marriage, and we hope that we can have your support in our efforts to eliminate cruelty to animals.”

Okay, let’s hash this out Ecorazzi style.

Here’s the thing: while it’s unfortunate that Prop 8 was passed and that a group of people will be denied rights based on their sexual preference, I don’t really see how it’s valid to compare and contrast Prop 2 and 8. Proposition 2 grants animals who are tortured in the most brutal ways a smidgen of relief, while Proposition 8 takes away the right for gay and lesbians to get married. Using the argument that “people care more about farm animals than they do about their fellow man,” seems lazy and backwards to me. Compassion and understanding is infinite, not case specific. Furthermore, as an oppressed people I would hope that the gay and lesbian community would support the liberation of other oppressed beings.

How do you feel about comparing Prop 2 and 8? Can specific parallels be drawn between the two enough to warrant a valid argument? Chime in and share your thoughts!

It seems that waves of criticism have started to flow from the celebrity world on Sarah Palin; especially when it comes to the environment, animal rights, abortion, and gay rights. Lindsay Lohan and her gal pal DJ Samantha Ronson are just the latest in a string of scathing comments from folks like Pink, Matt Damon, and Pamela Anderson. Check out the pair’s latest blog entry below:

“I really cannot bite my tongue anymore when it comes to Sarah Palin.

I couldn’t be more supportive of a woman in office, but let’s face it, it comes down to the person, and their beliefs, male or female.

Is it a sin to be gay? Should it be a sin to be straight? Or to use birth control? Or to have sex before marriage? Or even to have a child out of wedlock?

I find it quite interesting that a woman who now is running to be second in command of the United States, only 4 years ago had aspirations to be a television anchor. Which is probably all she is qualified to be… Also interesting that she got her passport in 2006.. And that she is not fond of environmental protection considering she’s FOR drilling for oil in some of our protected land…. Well hey, if she wants to drill for oil, she should DO IT IN HER OWN backyard. This really shows me her complete lack of real preparation to become the second most powerful person in this country.

Hmmmm-All of this gets me going-Fear, Anxiety, Concern, Disappointment, and Stress come into play…

Is our country so divided that the Republicans best hope is a narrow minded, media obsessed homophobe?

I know that the most important thing about this election is that people need to exercise their right to vote, regardless of their choice… I would have liked to have remained impartial, however I am afraid that the “lipstick on a pig” comments will overshadow the issues and the fact that I believe Barack Obama is the best choice, in this election, for president…

Palin’s desire to “save and convert the gays”-really??

According to this Associated Press story, the church of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is hosting a kind of conference devoted to the “conversion of Gays” — no kidding.

Here’s the AP text: ‘Gov. Sarah Palin’s church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer. You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality,” according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed since she was a child. Palin’s conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain’s candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice. She is staunchly anti-abortion, opposing exceptions for rape and incest, and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.’

I feel it’s necessary for me to clarify that I am not against Sarah Palin as a mother or woman.

Women have come a long way in the fight to have the choice over what we do with our bodies… And its frightening to see that a woman in 2008 would negate all of that.

Oh, and…Hint Hint Pali Pal- Don’t pose for anymore tabloid covers, you’re not a celebrity, you’re running for office to represent our, your, my COUNTRY!

And in the words of Pamela Anderson, “She can suck it“.

Lindsay- “I have faith that this country will be all that it can be with the proper guidance. I really hope that all of you make your decisions based on the facts and what feels right to you in your heart-vote for Obama!”

Samantha- “I love this country- however i wasn’t born here and don’t have the right to vote- so i beg of you all to really do your research and be educated when you cast your vote this coming november…. and if you’re in doubt- vote for obama! Mainly because if she gets elected my green card probably won’t get renewed!!!”

xoxo
Lindsay and Samantha“

Actress Lindsay Lohan has been on our radar over the last year after sporting a “Anti-Fur” button one month, and then going out on the town with a mink coat the next. This was followed by VISA bizarrely naming Lohan as the face of “ethical fashion” for their unwanted clothing campaign in London. Now, we’ve come almost full circle with Lohan attending the fur-free fashion show of Charlotte Ronson on Saturday, sponsored by the Humane Society of the US. Phew.

While no one can say for sure if Lindsay honestly gives a crap about this issue, we are happy to see her getting exposed to fashion that does not include fur — even if she’s only there to support her partner/best-bud Samantha Ronson and her fashion designer sister.

The HSUS worked with Charlotte to give out buttons, merchandise, and promote anti-fur messages throughout the event. “We are thrilled to continue our support of Charlotte Ronson and applaud her ongoing commitment to animals and fur-free fashion,” said Kristin Leppert, director of The HSUS’ Fur-Free Campaign.

Let’s hope Lohan gets the message.
