Soles4Souls is a non-profit that help provides footwear to people in need. During Barefoot Week, the organization will be collecting gently worn shoes and distributing thousands of pairs of new shoes right here in the old USA.

Johnasson has already donated 2000 pairs of shows from her Reebok line and is encouraging everyone to get involved.

Most recently Oxfam recruited nineteen actors, musicians and activists – including stars like Scarlettt Johansson, Annie Lennox, Colin Firth and Kristin Davis — to sign a climate change letter written to world leaders who attended the UN climate negotiations in Poland.

“It is desperately unfair that the poor should again feel the brunt, despite being least responsible,” read the letter. “Wealthy nations, who are in their advantaged position because of heavy industrialization, are the most responsible and able to lead the world in tackling climate change. This is why they must show leadership in Poland and provide solutions that have the interests of the world’s poor at their heart.”

With so many people getting involved, it’s hard to believe that only a few years ago the verdict was still out on climate change. Here’s to hoping that 2009 is full of even more delicious environmental progress!

Grammy-winning singer Rihanna is set to rock the stage at the Recording Industry Association of America’s Presidential Inauguration Charity Ball on January 20. The event will help raise millions for this season’s charity rockstar, Feeding America.

Remember that used tissue that Scarlett Johansson was auctioning off on behalf of USA Harvest, a hunger-relief organization? Yea, well it just sold for $5,300! Actor David Spade recently surprised the Phoenix Police Department with a donation of $100,000. Will this money go towards funding programs to help with poverty or drug rehabilitation? Nope. It will buy about 50 high-powered rifles. Spade, a Phoenix native, provided the money to a non-profit police foundation after seeing a jarring television news report about gun violence. The unfortunate reality is that criminals often have better weapons than officers. So, he’s hoping to level the field with this donation. Oh, and I’m scratching Phoenix off of my “places to live”. The holidays have officially arrived!! Know how I know? Because Scarlett Johansson is pawning off her snotty tissues!

That’s right! Ms. Johansson recently appeared on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and was quite under the weather. During the interview she blamed her “celebrity cold” on The Spirit co-star Samuel L. Jackson, saying she caught it from him. Scarlett believed that for this reason, her cold had some “value.”

And so in an act of pure class, Scarlett blew her nose into a tissue, put it into a Ziploc bag and autographed it. The tissue is now up for auction on eBay and is up to $2,000!!!!

While the whole idea of this grosses me out, knowing that all proceeds will benefit USA Harvest makes me feel a little bit better.

Hathaway kicked off a new campaign sponsorded by Netflix and Feeding America to help raise awareness and funds to combat the worsening hunger crisis in America.

Stars like Scarlett Johansson, Ben Affleck and Jessica Alba have also got involved by pledging their time to create holiday-themed artwork that will adorn Netflix gift subscriptions this holiday season, proceeds from which will be donated to Feeding America.

In addition, each actor’s work will be featured in a limited-edition Netflix Holiday Gift Box, a red, velvet-lined commemorative showcase featuring an individually signed and numbered print and a lifetime membership to Netflix. Only 100 boxes have been produced and and each cost 5,000 big ones! Of course, one hundred percent of the $5,000 donation will go to Feeding America and is equivalent to providing 80,000 meals to those in need this holiday season. Good deal!

The new couple chose the ecologically-conscious and exclusive Clayoquat Wilderness Resort which, according to Cele|bitchy, “specializes in weddings and honeymoons, to offer their guests plenty of outdoor activities along with a luxurious nature-themed setting.” Want a spend three nights there? Prepare to dish out $4,458.00 USD per person!

Anyways, while the location may have been environmentally-friendly — the transportation in getting there certainly was not. Unfortunately, Johansson and Reynolds chose an island that was not accessible by ferry — instead opting to fly their guests over in seven chartered sea planes. From The Inquirer,

Approximately 35 close friends and family members were instructed to gather at a specific time at Vancouver International Airport on the wedding day, the insider revealed to the Enquirer. They were not told ahead of time where they were going.They boarded chartered seaplanes – five to six guests in each of seven planes – and were whisked to a secluded resort owned by a friend of the couple on a remote island, outside of Vancouver off the coast of British Columbia. “She and Ryan picked an island that was inaccessible by ferry. The only way to get there was by seaplane.” But despite the big hush-hush, the couple succeeded in pulling off the wedding of their dreams. “It was an absolute gorgeous event,” concluded the insider.

So it looks like the choice for the wedding was less because of its eco-cred and more because, well, the owner was a friend. Either way, this small blip does little to overshadow the good works that Johansson has lent her time to over the years — the latest of which was a trip to Rwanda to draw attention to the continuing fight against AIDS in Africa.

“It was important for me to come here and understand the issue we’re up against firsthand,” she said. “It’s not until you’ve had the privilege of meeting healthcare providers who are fighting the daily battle, heard from people who are now getting antiretroviral drugs to stay alive, and met mothers whose babies are born healthy because they received treatment that stopped transmission of HIV, that you understand that we absolutely can do something to reverse the AIDS crisis in African countries.”

Johansson visited AIDS clinics in the country and worked alongside volunteers in assisting those in need. She continued: “I came here with an open mind, wanting to listen, understand and learn; I leave with the overwhelming understanding that the small action of making a (RED) choice in your purchases in the West has an enormous impact on the lives of people in countries like Rwanda.”

Starting this Friday, Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes will be starring in a series of Public Service Announcements to encourage people to recycle their discarded cell phones. The initiative is a cross promotional campaign with the Environmental Media Association and Lionsgate to help reduce CO2 emissions (while promoting The Spirit). 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average user replaces his or her cell phone every 18 months and that Nationwide, 130 million cellular phones go out of use annually, creating an estimated 65,000 tons of electronic garbage. That’s a lot of trash!

Here at Ecorazzi we give major props to celebs who work with Oxfam, including famous faces such as Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth, Kristin Davis, and Bill Nighy.  Earlier in the year we even had the chance to sit down with long-time Oxfam Ambassador, and new mother, Minnie Driver who explained to us just why she loves working with the organization so much.

I did a little research and was overwhelmed by the fact that more than 25 million people have died from AIDS since the disease first emerged in 1981, and 33 million people today are living with HIV. Furthermore, ninety percent of those infected live in poor countries and only three million individuals, or less than a third of those in need, have access to precious antiretroviral drugs.

The 34th G8 Summit, which is taking place until the 9th, is a gathering of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, the United States, Canada and Russia. In a letter drafted by the Oxfam ambassadors, the group remarked “The Millennium Development Goals that were set out in 2000 were chosen because they were ambitious, but also because they were realistic and achievable. The current delays in meeting these commitments are a disgrace.”

Actor Bill Nighy is truly no stranger to these proceedings — both personally and professionally. His 2005 movie, The Girl in the Cafe, features a love story that revolves around the G8 Summit in Reykjavík, Iceland. He’s currently in attendance at this year’s summit to make sure the letter is delivered.

Unfortunately, there appears to be a typo in the letter we received a link to. One sentence simply ends with “Failure to address these issues risks undermining much of the progress that has been made since Japan’s Presidency of”

Hmmm…obviously, the overall point of the letter is clear, but let’s hope the final version read a bit better.
