I mean sure I can grab a Starbucks and go sit in Central Park, but sometimes I just want to escape to a private little garden and do my thing. Good thing for me that Bette Midler just announced the opening of the Target East Harlem Community Garden.

The new garden – which was conceived by famous designer Sean Conway – uses cutting-edge sustainable technology to eliminate dependence on outside energy. Wind turbines and solar panels power the 5,000 square foot garden’s LED energy efficient lighting, and a rainwater harvesting system helps conserve resources by collecting fallen rainwater. Furthermore, the garden rocks some serious compost bins that make recycling organic household and yard waste super-duper easy.

Midler is the founder of the New York Restoration Project, a non-profit dedicated to developing and revitalizing parks, community gardens and public space in New York City. Ecorazzi loves us some NYRP and have covered their accomplishments on many, many occasions.
