So wait! Mary Kate and Ashley are actually budding environmentalists? Sharon Stone is up with Planet Earth? Hmm…

Luckily the HSUS has released a report showing that the fur industry  makes enormous energy investments to run their fur factory farms and tanneries — including using a slew of gasoline-burning vehicles and a laundry list of toxic carcinogenic chemicals.

Check out the short video below to show how stars like Aretha Franklin and Maggie Gyllenhaal are not only making the cruel choice when wearing fur, but also the environmentally-destructive choice.

Fur-wearers beware! The latest news on the celebrity activism circuit is that Sharon Stone and the Olsen twins have seen their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame defaced with the words “Fur Hag” by anti-fur protesters.

Both the twins and Stone are frequent fur-wearers and have been subject to various protests and public demonstrations over the years from those who disagree with their cruel fashion sense.

While I’m never shy about my stance on fur, I am 100 percent against any and all acts of vandalism or destruction in the name of a peaceful goal like animal-rights. Personally I see nothing wrong with protests, but believe acts of vandalism to not only be counter-productive to our mission, but highly ineffective. Hey, but that’s just me!

Sharon Stone recently gave away a closet full of clothes and unused furniture to a charity for abused women. “I got a letter from (actresses) Mariska Hargitay and Hilary Swank about a charity for abused women, and here was a gigantic, refrigerator-size bag, and could I fill it with clothing,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling More magazine. When I first saw this photo, I thought it was a nice change for Sharon Stone to be snapped promoting something good for a change. Here she is leaving the Ivy restaurant in Los Angeles, California today with a tee that reads “PEACE”.

However, upon closer examination, it appears that the bag she’s carrying looks to be made from snakeskin. Potentially python. Ugh.

Every now and then, while having a particularly trying day here in NYC, I might “lovingly” refer to my home as Garbage Island. Of course it’s usually accompanied by an expletive and generally instigated by some sort of subway malfunction, but at the end of the day I don’t REALLY think my city is a trashy place. Well, at least no where near as trashy as the island I’m about to tell you about.

Indeed there actually IS a massive blob of trash floating out in the Pacific Ocean just north of Hawaii that is quite often refered to as “Garbage Island.” Like Big Foot or the Bermuda Triangle or Sharon Stone’s ability to feel compassion, some say this mysterious mound of pollution simply doesn’t exist. Well skeptics get ready to be converted.

VBS TV has just released a 12- part documentary series that shows the world just how real (and serious) Garbage Island is. The film documents the crew’s discoveries and shows the unbelievable impact our waste has on the ocean.

So blow up that raft, pack a bag and take a little trip on down to Garbage Island.

The next time you go to throw something out in London, don’t be surprised to hear Paris Hilton exclaim, “That’s hot.” The city is considering experimenting with trash bins featuring celebrity voices as a way to get more people to properly dispose of their garbage. Currently, Finland is utilizing the tech for their own public bins. According to one source, a detector in the bin will activate a loudspeaker every time rubbish is deposited and the celebrity voice recording will say: “It’s great that you care about the city. Cool isn’t it?”

Um, yea. And creepy too.

A spokeswoman for the Mayor of London said that he is very interested in innovative schemes “that will encourage Londoners to recycle their rubbish.” The bins in Helsinki are just another example that they think might work really well in the capital.

Right — now the only question is: Who do you think should be featured as one of the voices of trash? Better yet, let’s have a vote!

Welsh TV presenters Rhodri and Lucy Owen, along with new baby Gabriel, are leading the George Thomas Hospice Annual Walk in the Park. Walkers are encouraged to walk for their local hospice; the Owen family is supporting Cardiff Hospice.

Sharon Stone isn’t all bad, as PETA might think. Along with James Caan and Joe Pesci, the actress has helped the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAG) Celebrity Golf Classic raise over $5 million. This year’s tournament will be held on October 6.

At last week’s third annual Hot in Hollywood Benefit lots of stars came out to play and raise funds for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Among them were host America Ferrera, Jaime Pressly, Neil Patrick Harris, Elijah Kelley, Jason Biggs, and Emily Deschanel.

World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk joined the Chicago Cubs in supporting the Organic School Project last week during the fifth annual Kerry Wood’s Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling Tournament.

Looks like no one is safe when it comes to Sharon Stone – not even spiders! According to Ernest Borgnine, the Oscar-winning actor who costarred with Stone in 1981’s Deadly Blessing, Stone had a tarantula’s pincers removed before she would do a scene with the insect.

PETA is positively furious. Spokesperson Ingrid Newkirk said to the New York Post,

“She chose to make a tiny insect an amputee. Perhaps she should change her name legally to ‘Heart of Stone.’ “

Sharon Stone’s rep seems to think that the whole situation is pretty laughable, being quoted as saying,

“If the tarantula was a male, we could add him to her list of her extraordinary leading men…”

All this is following pretty hot on the heels of PETA’s offer earlier this month to have Sharon Stone’s brain scanned because of her supremely careless comments about the earthquakes in China.

If she didn’t take herself so seriously and her comments weren’t so cruel, some of her antics might be laughable. (Especially some of the outfits she’s worn.) But especially after reading the quote from Stone’s rep, you’ve got to wonder if everyone surrounding her is just a whole bucket of messed up.

Remember when PETA sent Britney Spears’ parents

PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk has sent Sharon Stone a letter offering the actress an opportunity to have the prefrontal region of her brain scanned for emotional defects. Awesome. Here’s a highlight:

“I am writing with an offer that could provide an opportunity for you to escape all future public condemnation when you show insensitivity to the suffering of others.

Given that millions of people – including children – were killed, injured, and left homeless by the recent earthquake in China, everyone was shocked to hear you dismiss the devastating effects of this disaster. However, your cavalier attitude did not come as a surprise to us. We are used to the indifference that you flaunt and the callous remarks that you make about the suffering and death of the animals whose fur you wear so often.

Scientific studies suggest that the prefrontal regions of the brains of people who lack empathy might be underdeveloped. Here’s our offer: Would you allow PETA to pay for a scan of the prefrontal region of your brain to determine if comments and actions that seem to demonstrate a lack of empathy are the result of a physical defect?”

Greatest. PETA. Letter. Ever.

As Cele|bitchy put it ever so eolquently: “This is my favorite angry letter of all time. Offering to buy a famous celebrity a brain scan under the obviously fake guise of concern because you think she’s a crazy bitch? Brilliant. You know the follow-up letter will be to buy Stone a needle and thread and pay to have her mouth sewn shut… for her own sake.”

On hand to support her was Oprah’s flavor of the month, perky Brit and “Gorgeously Green” author, Sophie Uliano, who also recently took Deborah’s wedding dresses on “The View.” Sophie, who wore an iconic Lindquist “Skull and Crossbones” cashmere cardi alongside good friend Julia Roberts on Oprah! is one of Deborah’s biggest fans.
