PETA has stepped up their campaign to educate people on the dangers of leaving pets unattended in hot cars. The group re-released an ad featuring American Idol judge Simon Cowell after a dog perished in a car waiting for its owner to return from an audition for the television reality show in Denver. From the LA Times,

Vanderbilt had driven with his girlfriend from North Dakota for the open audition and left the dog, a small terrier, in the car with the windows rolled up. He had apparently planned to check on the animal periodically throughout the day, but neglected to do so until 2 p.m., by which time the car had been parked in hot weather for a number of hours. When Vanderbilt arrived to check on the dog, it was already dead.

Vanderbilt has since been charged with animal cruelty and given an August 20 court date for his negligence. Check out Cowell’s ad on the dangers of keeping pets in hot cars after the jump below:

American Idol judge Simon Cowell has long been on our list of famous animal lovers — but in a new interview with PETA, he really opens up on the topic. Everything from his feelings on Obama’s decision not to get a shelter pup to Michael Vick’s abuse of pit bulls is covered. Below are some highlights:

His thoughts on the First Family’s new pup:

I think we’ve got to be balanced on this. I think—on a positive note, I think it’s nice that they have made an issue of buying a dog for the kids. What I think would be great would be if they also took in a shelter dog, just from anywhere, to balance it. I’ll even pay for the dog food!

On people who chain dogs up for life outside:

That’s disgraceful. The awful thing about what that person doesn’t realize is that in the dog’s mind, as he’s being chained up … that dog has put his trust in the person who’s chaining him. That dog would give up his life nine times out of 10 for the person who’s chaining him up. … For a dog, under those circumstances, just to be left alone, starving to death, lonely and thirsty, is about as low as a person can go. You’ve got to have a really warped, disgusting personality to want to do something like that. That really disgusts me.

On Michael Vick’s animal abuse:

He should never, ever be publicly supported again. Ever. If people really knew the gory details of what he was doing …. They think it was just a dogfight, but what do you do after the fights? The way they kill the maimed dogs ….

Check out the rest of the interview here.

Yesterday evening Elton John and his partner David Furnish held their 10th annual White Tie and Tiara Ball to raise money for the (aptly named) Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, which has recently been given its third consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity evaluator.

About 630 guests showed up, including famous faces like Bill Clinton, Denzel Washington, Elizabeth Hurley, Simon Cowell and Will Smith, who all had to pay the 3,000 Euro ($4,700) donation simply to enter. DAMN!

The night included dinner, concert and an auction that boasted such prizes as a trip to Africa with Elton John and lunch for six with Bill Clinton. By the end of the night the auction alone had raised $20 million for the charity.

Don’t have a tiara, white tie OR $4,700? You still can help out! Vist Elton John’s AIDS Foundation to learn more about the organization and to find out how you can get involved!

But beneath that growly snarl and botoxed complexion there’s a warm-hearted charitable dude who’s sprinkling his philanthropic fairy dust all across the globe.

Ecorazzi previously reported that Cowell is planning to leave his almost 200 million dollar fortune to animal and children’s charities when he eventually passes away…but Simon isn’t letting death stand in his way. The American Idol judge recently wrote a check for $162,000 to the parents of a cancer-stricken girl to pay off their mortgage.

The money went to Amy and Randy Stoen who’s daughter Madelaine was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma — a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Amy and Randy travel over 100 miles each day to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Minnesota where Madelaine receives regular chemotherapy treatments.

Simon announced the good news yesterday on Oprah Winfrey’s new show Oprah’s Big Give, saying: “I never knew that doing good could feel so good. It doesn’t stop here. If there’s any problem, I’m her guardian angel now.”

Well if this isn’t the feel good story of the week I don’t know what is. Oh Simon…you old so and so!

thanks: femalefirst.co.uk

When I think of Simon Cowell, the first expression that pops in my head is, “That was by fah (far) the wehst (worst) thing I’ve eva (ever) seen (seen). ” Do you like my cyber Brittish accent? True, the snotty, English judge of American Idol has made a name for himself by pointing out how “bloody awhful (awful)” most Americans are at singing, but it looks as though the cool critic does indeed have a streak of kindness after all.

Cowell has just announced that when he eventually passes away, he will leave almost all of his fortune (about 180 million dollars) to both animal and children’s charities. Not the first good deed of his life, Cowell has shown a generous side before when he donated 20,000 dollars to set up a dog sanctuary in Barbados. He’s also used American Idol to promote various charitable organizations.

I’m impressed with Simon’s decision, but if I were him I’d be careful about letting this information slip out. I can see it now: Simon Cowell Gunned Down Today By Gang Of Orphan Children And Rescued Dogs! Be careful, Simon! If you die who will tuck Ryan Seacrest in at night?
