Jon Stewart To Host Autistic Benefit for Comedy Central

Filed under: campaigns, events, events: nyc, film-tv, television — parrish @ 9:07 am

This year it seems that Jon Stewart is the host with the most. Ok, well maybe not the MOST viewers…or the MOST jokes…or the MOST ratings…I’ll rephrase. This year it seems that Jon Stewart is…the host.

After an only mildly successful stint as the host of the Oscars, Stewart is putting on his master of ceremonies hat (it’s blue with feathers) once again for the second Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education.

The celebrity infused fundraiser will help raise money for schools and educational programs for autistic children and adults. The last benefit was held in October of 2006 and raised more than $2.6 billion. THAT IS NOT A TYPO PEOPLE!!! 2.6 BILLION!!!!! [Ed note: Actually, that is a typo. $2.6 billion? The sourced article was a bit too generous, though we’d love to believe it true. Actual amount was $2.5 million.]

This year the Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education will take place on April 13th at the Beacon Theater in New York and will also air live on Comedy Central at 8 pm EST. You can expect performances by Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler. And appearances by Jonah Hill, Matthew Broderick, Kevin James, Rosie O’Donnell and Susie Essman.

Can’t afford to attend the event live (like me)? Don’t have cable (like me)? No worries! This year you can download the show on iTunes and xBox Live Marketplace for $1.99…with all of the proceeds going to charity, of course.

Stephen Colbert’s Broken Wrist Raises $171,000 For Charity

Filed under: campaigns — michael @ 2:30 pm

070822_colbert_hmed_2phmedium.jpgWho says lunacy doesn’t make a difference?

When Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, broke his wrist last June, he decided that it was a perfect opportunity to raise some money for those in need. So, as a parody to Lance Armstrong’s cancer-awareness “LiveStrong” bracelets, he sold similar ones with the words “WristStrong”. He then encouraged celebrities from Katie Couric, Brian Williams and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to wear them. All of the profits went to help the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a charity that assists injured service members and their families. From the article,

“Colbert earlier auctioned off the cast from his broken wrist, raising $17,000, which also benefited the Yellow Ribbon Fund. The bracelets have since been a badge of honor for the so-called Colbert Nation.”

Way to go, Nation! In late 2006, a painting of Stephen Colbert standing in front of a painting of Stephen Colbert raised over $50K on eBay for Save The Children Charity. We can only imagine what’s next (sprained ankle=Colbert socks?) that will entertain and help out for a great cause.

Obama and Oprah: Oprahpalooza 2007 Kicks Off

As Oprahpalooza kicked off in Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire over the weekend, it is clear that when it comes to celebrity endorsements, Obama is the man. A flood of support continues to pour in from a range of celebrities including George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Stephen Colbert, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and oh, Dreamworks (because that is what you get with the three most powerful men in Hollywood - Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen).

Other candidates have their ringers as well. Senator Hillary Clinton has recent endorsements and support from Barbara Streisand, Donald Trump, Martha Stewart and Tom Hanks. And of course, her husband former President Clinton. I mean who doesn’t want to see Bill back in the White House, especially with all of his recent socially global and climate driven initiatives. Regardless, the campaign is truly heating up and while at the end of the day it is about electing a leader based on the issues and leadership capabilities, there is no denying the magic of the “O” factor and Obama earns big strategic points on that one!

Check out the latest celebrity endorsements on The Huffington Post Fundrace 2008.
