In a pretty hilarious split screen Formidable Opponent segment, Colbert started off by interviewing himself and then introduced the former Vice President to chime in. Gore shared this piece of information:

No Impact Man, aka Colin Beaven, appeared for the second time on The Colbert Report last night — updating Stephen on how his year of no impact went, and talking about his new book.

When Colbert asked Beaven what he hoped to achieve by living a no-impact life, he responded, “I hoped to show that there was someway each of us could make a difference. And we went the “full hog” when it came to living environmentally — but the real question is, is there anything all of us can do? And that was the hope, to see if there was something we could all contribute.” Beaven then turned the questions on Stephen, asking if he might join his campaign, called the No Impact Project, which challenges people to live one week with no impact. “No way in hell,” the host responded. “In fact, while I’m sitting here, I may just burn a stack of tires.”

This year, however, Colbert has decided to use his birthday for good by signing up with DonorsChoose.org and — in lieu of present — asking people to donate to help schools instead. He writes, “Nation, May 13th is an important day. My birthday. Please help me celebrate by donating to one of the needy classroom projects below. DonorsChoose makes me feel like every day is my birthday. That, and my 364 counterfeit driver’s licenses. You can donate your birthday too. And the great thing is, if you give your birthday away, you don’t age that year. Look it up.”

Not everyone is thrilled with the Obama organic White House vegetable garden.

Take the organizers of MACA (The Mid America CropLife Association) who recently sent a letter to the Obama family urging them to consider using pesticides in their garden because — and get this — “the time needed to tend a garden is not there for the majority of our citizens.” GASP! It’s nice to hear MACA reminding families that they have no lives — and therefore, shouldn’t consider gardening as a leisure activity. We should all just sit our fat asses in front of the television, continue buying non-organic food, and not take an interest in understanding how vegetables are grown. Thine eyes have been opened.

Treehugger cited a few juicy points from the letter — here are a couple:

We live in a very different world than that of our grandparents. Americans are juggling jobs with the needs of children and aging parents. The time needed to tend a garden is not there for the majority of our citizens, certainly not a garden of sufficient productivity to supply much of a family’s year-round food needs….

As you go about planning and planting the White House garden, we respectfully encourage you to recognize the role conventional agriculture plays in the U.S in feeding the ever-increasing population, contributing to the U.S. economy and providing a safe and economical food supply. America’s farmers understand crop protection technologies are supported by sound scientific research and innovation….

Stephen Colbert, in classic fashion, agreed with MACA saying, “I’ve always been against organic foods. If I wanted to ingest something a hippie picked, I would eat an autoharp.” Check out his commentary at the two-minute mark on this ridiculous request from MACA.

On Tuesday, The Colbert Report highlighted a new product called Schmeat — also known as lab-grown meat.

The segment featured thoughts from PETA’s co-founder Ingrid Newkirk and words from scientist Dr.Vladimir Mironov. Proving that lab-grown meat is just like real meat, Mironov said:

“You know, if its looks like cat, o.k, it’s behave like cat and it’s make meow, then it’s cat.” Classic.

Bittman, who claims to be a vegan until 6 pm, shares with Colbert that:

“It’s been said by the United Nations that about a fifth or a sixth of all greenhouse gases are produced by industrialized livestock production.”

“You treat the animals like they’re widgets, you churn out 10 billion a year in this country — which means about  30 animals per person in the United States — we eat those, it increases global warming. To the extend you eat less of that meat, you reduce global warming. ”
