Daryl Hannah is set to join thousands on Monday in Washington, D.C. for what’s being billed as the largest mass civil disobedience rally for the climate in U.S. history. The protest will take place at the Capitol Power Plan — the only coal-burning plant in the District, and a major source of sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and soot.

“We need to send a message to Congress and the president that we want them to take the actions that are needed to preserve climate for young people and future generations and all life on the planet,” said Dr. James Hansen, NASA’s chief climate scientist in a video posted on capitolclimateaction.org. ”What has become clear from the science is that we cannot burn all of the fossil fuels without creating a very different planet. The only practical way to solve the problem is to phase out the biggest source of carbon — and that’s coal.”

According to the website, the rally is intended to peacefully disrupt access to the plant by surrounding it. Obviously, the 2,500 people expected to attend all face the risk of arrest — but that hasn’t stopped people like Daryl Hannah from standing up for what they believe in before. In 2006, the Splash star was arrested after she refused to come down from a tree while protesting the destruction of an inner-city LA garden. Joining her in D.C. on Monday will be Hansen, former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, singer Kathy Mattea and James Gustave Speth, dean of Yale University’s School of Forestry. Susan Sarandon, who recently recorded a PSA for the event calling on people to join the rally, will be unable to attend due to a scheduled performance.

To find out more on the event, jump to the Capitol Climate Action website here.

In the video, Sarandon says: “Civil disobedience can overcome great challenges and global warming is the greatest challenge of our time. On March 2nd, thousands will come together in Washington D.C for a historic protest on the climate crisis. Many will continue our tradition of peaceful, civil disobedience.”

That’s the case with Lev Leviev, the Israeli billionaire denounced by Oxfam America in January for his unethical diamond mining practices and settlement construction. Famous Hollywood photographer Timothy White gives thanks to Leviev in his new book, Hollywood Pinups, released today; Leviev’s diamonds are being featured in the book. In an ironic twist, the book names Oxfam America as one of the recipients of its proceeds–and Oxfam isn’t happy.

Neither are the celebs featured in the book. The PR company that represents Tea Leoni, Kate Walsh, Felicity Huffman, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Melissa George has asked for their names to not be associated with the Leviev, and Oxfam Ambassador Kristin Davis has had her photo removed from Leviev’s website. New York rights coalition Adalah-NY has contacted others and asked them to renounce the company as well, including Susan Sarandon (who wrote the book’s introduction), Vanessa Williams, Kate Hudson, Molly Sims, and Gina Gershon.

An Oxfam America spokesperson, Adrienne Smith, said, “Oxfam reiterates our policy that we are not and never will be partners or beneficiaries of Leviev because of both his mining practices and his support of Israeli settlements on Occupied Palestinian Lands which is in contravention of International Law and a major obstacle in the road to peace… Oxfam is disturbed to find ourselves used in this way and we intend to be proactive in informing those in our community about the deliberate strategy of Leviev Diamonds to connect itself with unwitting charities and celebrities.”

What do you think? Did Leviev redeem himself at all by trying to work with Oxfam? Or is everyone right to continue denouncing this corruption?

During an interview with The Advocate, Susan was asked if she would play as Hillary if a movie about the politician’s life were to be made.

No. I’ve been around her and don’t find her… At this point, to say after what’s happened to her campaign and how they squandered all that money and all the different reasons her campaign fell apart, to blame it on sexism, I find so destructive to every young girl who dreams about making a difference through government. Instead of saying, “Look how far I’ve gotten and you can do it too,” and all the positive things she could have done, she’s turned into such a blamer and whiner, as if that was the reason… – The Advocate

She went on to comment that she found it “dishonorable” and “destructive to young women all over” for Clinton to have blamed the failed campaign on sexism.

A bright spot in the interview? When asked if Barack Obama could actually win the election, she responded “Why wouldn’t he be able to win?” Right on, Susan. Right on.

Now it’s time to turn it over to you. What do you think? Do you think her comments on Hillary Clinton are off base? Right on target? Sound off!

The outspoken New York greenie, along with longtime companion Tim Robbins, has recently expressed concern with the expansion plans of Greenwich Village’s St. Vincent’s Hospital. The couple have a home in the area and are concerned with the impact that development will have on the neighborhood. That’s right, she’s now fighting sick people.

The couple lives just three blocks away from the proposed structure. While she admits that changes need to be made at the facility, she is asking the planners to consider some proposed alternatives. Let’s hope that the family’s health insurance covers emergency room visits at other hospitals.

While we New Yorkers are always concerned with the perils of expansion (not to mention collapsing cranes), we might want to look at something like NYU’s attempted urban domination before going after hospitals.

The multi-color, technicolor King of Pop has finally made that essential leap onto the green bandwagon. This weekend, Michael Jackson was seen scooting about town (or rather being scooted about town) in a fancy new Toyota Prius. Jackson has long since had a reputation for being a bit of a thorn in the side of Mother Earth. You know, owning private jets, massive mansions, his own amusement park…that whole bag. And I must say, it’s refreshing to finally see Jackson take a step in the green direction.

Jackson joins a goggle of other celebrities such as Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford, Jennifer Aniston and Will Ferrell, who have all been seen rocking a cleaner driving ride. Say what you want about the guy, but I must give credit where credit is due.

So Michael Jackson, a message from me to you: stay out of trouble and keep on chuggin away in that sweet, green machine.
