Harrison Ford Is The Newest Star Of The O.C.

Filed under: honors, thegreenpicture — lori @ 12:15 pm

Hundreds came out  Orange County’s Laguna Beach for The Sea Change Summer Party to raise money for environmental group Oceana, and to honor Harrison Ford’s consistent work for the environment. Ford sits on many boards for different environmental groups, he’s donated acreage in Wyoming for conservation, and his recent chest waxing to bring attention to deforestation is one of the most creative acts of advocacy I’ve scence in a long time.  A perfect choice for someone to honor…he deserves it!

Oceana protects the world’s oceans and receives mondo celebrity support for their work. An impressive list of eco-stars were flown to the party in helicopters from L.A.! Crikey!

Celebrities who showed up were Ted Danson, Diane Lane, Diane Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, Beau Bridges, and Sam Waterson (also honored). Oceana paid $1,000 to purchase carbon credits to offset the party’s carbon emissions.

Global warming is hitting our oceans hard, and it seems the media often forgets to mention our troubled salty waters. I’m glad Oceana is out there working it and raising awareness.

In celebration of World Ocean Day on June 8th, Oceana and skin care brand La Mer threw a cocktail reception in NYC last night. The main highlight was La Mer’s generous donation of $100,000 to the environmental organization. On hand to accept and celebrate were Ted Danson, Rosario Dawson, Michelle Trachtenberg, Bob and Lee Woodruff, Amber Valetta and many more famous and notable individuals.

“This is only the beginning of a partnership that will last a long, long time.” Ted Danson noted, “La Mer and Oceana are an elegant fit. Both are based in science and beauty.” Further cementing the relationship, La Mer announced a limited edition World Ocean Day crème, currently available in 173 locations in North America.

Check out some pictures from the event below. Oceana also released a “Top 10″ of things you can do to help save the ocean. Check them out after the jump.

Glenn Close Receives Golden Bone For Work With Dogs

Filed under: animals, products, shopping, web — parrish @ 8:51 pm

Paris has too many. DMX might have been too cruel. Michael Vick…well we all know how that story ended. Aren’t there any celebrities out there treatin’ Snoopy right? Enter Glenn Close

Glenn Close recently received a “Golden Bone” from LookToTheStars.org for her role as co-founder of Fetchdog.com — an online store that offers high-end canine supplies while raising money for charity. Each time you purchase an item through Fetchdog.com a percentage of the total will be donated to a select dog charity of your choice. Some doggy-options are: Little Angels Pug RescueAnimal Rescue New Orleans, the ASPCA and many more.

The site is also home to Glenn’s blog and a section called Lively Licks where Glenn interviews celebs like Mary Steenburgen, Ted Danson, Dan Zelman and Debra Messing about all things canine. “Our dogs love us and keep us laughing through good times and bad,” writes Close on her blog, “This blog is a tribute to all the fabulous dogs who trot and wag their way through our lives and to the people who they have so successfully trained.”

Close has several dogs herself and is known for bringing her “kids” to the set while shooting. Now I know some of you might be wondering if Glenn got her dogs from rescue shelters, so I did a little digging (no pun intended).  I couldn’t get word if any of her CURRENT dogs are from shelters, but she has a solid record of owning rescued dogs and she certainly supports some great rescue shelters!

So a big high five, Glenn, from me to you. Thanks for setting the example and doing them doggies right!

Ted Danson Calls Ocean Stewardship A Moral And Economic Obligation

Filed under: campaigns — michael @ 1:44 pm

danson.jpgOn the same day it was revealed that 41% of the world’s oceans have been ‘heavily-affected’ by human activity (see map here), actor/activist Ted Danson spoke to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. calling for better practices to protect the world’s oceans from overfishing and mercury contamination.

A founder and long-time board member for the organization Oceana, Danson passionately urged change saying, “This is not about saving fish from the goodness of our hearts or taking care of our oceans because we want to be thought of as environmental. It is economic. It is moral, and it is public health.”

As we’ve suspected, Danson touched upon the frustrations of public opinion focusing too much on global warming and not enough on the health of the ocean ecosystem. He said both equally deserve the spotlight. From the article,

“‘I guess it’s really tough to get people to focus on this great big, beautiful, gorgeous ocean,” said Danson when discussing media coverage of ocean contamination and the public’s awareness of the issue.”

Oceana recently became a partner in Discovery Channel’s Planet Green Network. Since 2001, they’ve won over fifteen major victories for the oceans — including the protection of one million square miles of ocean habitat. Law And Order’s Sam Waterston Joins Oceana Board Of Directors

jackpic.jpgOscar-nominated actor and star of NBC’s Law & Order, Sam Waterston, has been called up to join Oceana’s Board of Directors. He’ll be in good company — celebrity/activist Ted Danson has been a member of the board for over twenty years. For Waterston, the impetus to participate goes back to experiences from his youth.

“I got involved with Oceana initially because I grew up beside the ocean in New England and loved it, When I learned that the collapse of the New England cod fishery was final, with all that meant for the communities and fishermen there, I wanted to help,” noted Waterston. “I started to read more and more scientific reports clearly showing that our oceans are headed towards an irreversible collapse and I learned that Oceana was actually doing something about it. I like their science-based, results driven approach. When asked to join the board, I felt that I had to join and do all that I could.”

Ted Danson had nothing but praise for Waterston’s decision. “What a coup for Oceana,” said Danson. “I love Sam’s work as an actor and I am very excited to have an excuse to spend more time with him. I know he will help Oceana get even more done. It really is incredible how much we’ve been able to get done in the past few years.”
