The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s campaign features Jasmine, the 8 year old vegetarian daughter of a University of Miami pediatric epidemiologist.

The White House is refusing to comment on the ads. What do you think about calling the President out, via his children, in this sort of campaign, even if it is for something as worthy as more fruits and veg for kids?

It looks like Spiderman is taking on his toughest battle yet: getting schools to serve more lunches with fruits, vegetables, and low-fat vegetarian meals. Tobey Maguire has written letters to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Tom Harkin asking them to add these healthy additions to an upcoming re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

“As a parent, I am contacting you because I am deeply concerned that unhealthy school lunches are contributing to our nation’s childhood obesity epidemic,” writes Maguire. “My wife and I just had our second child, so this issue is tremendously important to us…Let me ask you please to ensure the Child Nutrition Act provides more fruits, vegetables, and healthy vegetarian foods. Young people deserve healthful food, and I can’t imagine a better investment in the future of our country.”

As Maguire points out in his letter, school across the nation are inundated with surplus meat — millions of pounds of beef, pork, and other high-fat meat products are purchased by the USDA and distributed to school as part of the government’s commodity foods program. I’m sure many of us here can remember the crap we were served growing up — and now our children are faced with the same unhealthy options.

Want to help? Sign a petition here telling Congress you want children to eat better in school.
The Times Online, from the UK, posted a piece about David Michael Bruno’s 100 Things Challenge and talks (somewhat blindly) about the recent push by a few celebrities to declutter and curb their consumerism too.

From the article by John Harlow:

“Some strong-minded personalities have always set their own limits. Leonardo DiCaprio, the actor and environmental campaigner, has become the latest convert to smaller cars and owns a relatively modest home in the Hollywood Hills. He has told friends he may stick at about 150 personal objects, including comic books illustrated by his father.

Other wealthy Hollywood stars, such as Reese Witherspoon and DiCaprio’s friend Tobey Maguire, say that children have complicated their desire to declutter.

The Spider-Man actor “is fighting a battle against the stuff which materialises in the house. He does not want it or need it unless it’s related to basketball”, said a friend last week. “That is like his sweet tooth, and we all have that.”

Could you pare your life down to 100 things, or even 150? Or maybe you already have!

(P.S. The first comment on the article by one ‘Steve Ward;; gets an honorary mention: “100 items? Even my smallest Lego kit has more than this.” Well played, Steve, well played.)

The latest comes from Demi Moore — who directed and edited the following clip featuring over 50 celebrities naming their pledge of service. The idea came from President-elect Barack Obama’s call for every American to help deliver change. People featured in the clip include Cameron Diaz, Hayden Panettiere, Laura Linney, Dakota Fanning, Jaime Pressly, Ashlee Simpson, Nicole Richie, Toby Maguire, Diddy, Alyssa Milano, Eva Mendes, Molly Sims, Courtney Cox Arquette and David Arquette.
Of course, as suspected, there were plenty of famous faces in attendance, including Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Tobey Maguire, Josh Groban, Amanda Peet, Nick Lachey, Kevin Connelly, Lukas Haas, Jason Bateman and many more.

The event showcased street artist Shepard Fairey’s new work, which will raise awareness for Feeding America and help them continue to provide food assistance to more than 25 million low-income people.

So a big thanks to Davey Boy for doing well and keepin’ all them bellies full!

Seriously!

This weekend, Aniston threw a holiday/housewarming party at her new Beverly Hills mansion for some of her close friends, including veggie-superstars Ellen DeGeneres, Portia De Rossi, Tobey Maguire and his wife, Jennifer Meyer.

Now as many vegetarians and vegans know, the holidays can be a bitch when it comes to eating at parties. See also: GET THAT DEAD TURKEY AWAY FROM ME!!! But Aniston proved to be a classy broad and made sure the catered event included lots of vegan food for her meat-free friends. SCORE!

As somebody who knows what it feels like to attend those holiday parties that are less than veg-friendly, I so appreciate Jennifer’s gesture and am sure that our favorite famous veggies did too! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Take a deep breath. Can you smell that? No it’s not Sienna Miller covered in cow’s blood, it’s the smell of Election Day. As many Americans wait for hours in local poll lines (reading Ecorazzi on their Blackberry, of course) we’d like to remind all of our West Coast-rocking, Californians to vote YES on Prop 2.

While the Razz has not officially endorsed any candidate, we HAVE joined our favorite stars like Ellen Degeneres, Persia White and Tobey Maguire by publicly announcing our support for Proposition 2.

To review: Prop 2 is an initiative to add a chapter to Division 20 of California’s Health and Safety Code to prohibit the confinement of certain farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs.

And you don’t have to be a vegetarian to support proposition deuce! Major publications including the New York Times (which is traditionally insensitive to animal rights issues) have endorsed the historic proposition.

So when all you lovely Californians head to the polls this morning, vote with your heart and vote YES ON PROP 2! It’s time for some positive change up in this house!

In a recent conference call with the media, Silverstone promoted Obama’s global warming policies and revealed her reasons for backing him saying, “I was impressed when I heard him talking about how we give corporations free rides regarding their use of the environment,” Silverstone said. “Obama will make corporations pay for the harmful emissions that they put into the air and keep corporations responsible.” [Read more...]

The film follows seven presenters, personally trained by former US vice president Al Gore as part of the Climate Project.
Hilary Swank wasn’t the only new celeb to pick up a BMW H7. Actor Tobey Maguire was also spotted burning the hydrogen while out in LA the other day. We talk about offshore drilling and he said he would quote, consider, offshore drilling. We talked about nuclear power, well it has to be safe, environment, blah, blah, blah.” Could McCain be any less presidential?

Here’s a secret: there’s only one thing that makes me happier than amazing vegan pumpkin pie. And that, my dear friends, is amazing vegan celebrities. Apparently I’m not the only one that feels this way. In fact, the good folks over at Sprig.com have rated a list of their favorite vegan celebs and we think that’s just dandy!

Because it’s hard to actually pinpoint who is vegan and not in Hollywood, earlier this year The Vegan Society reached out to Ecorazzi to help design a comprehensive list of confirmed vegan celebrities. As the resident vegan I took on that project and I think it’s safe to say that Sprig did a pretty good job. There were, however, a few blunders.

On the list, Sprig includes Andre Benjamin and Shania Twain – two celebs who are currently believed to not be vegan. In March of 2008, Andre told Pittsburgh City Paper that, “I’m not totally vegan now –I eat fish occasionally.” Then in September of 2008 he confirmed with Rolling Stone, “Besides, I’m not totally vegan. I still eat honey and wear leather.”

Shania at one time called herself a “sensible person and non-smoking vegan,” but later reported that she doesn’t “eat meat, fish, or eggs.” This left many to believe that dairy was still included in her diet. Finally, they included Tobey Maguire who Ecorazzi reported is mostly vegan except when he has to gain weight for a role.

Overall the list was thoughtful, smart and right on! To find out who made the cut, visit Sprig.com!
