Love was definitely in the air last Sunday night as Hollywood’s finest came out in support of VOTE YES ON PROP 2 at the “Making History Under the Stars” gala hosted by lovebirds, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi. Prop 2 is the Californian Prevention of Farm Cruelty Act which aims to help stop animal cruelty, improve our health and safety, support family farmers, and protect our air and water.

The star-studded fete, held in Bel Air, brought out passionate and vocal supporters of the Proposition, including Heather Graham, James Cromwell, Amy Smart, Jared Leto and a bevy of others all with the same call of concern for a better quality of life for farm animals who spend all their lives incarcerated in crates, where they do not have enough room to turn around, lie down, or even stretch their legs.

James Cromwell, who is one of the animal kingdom’s staunchest supporters, literally brought us to tears when discussing the reality of farm animals’ lives and suffering. “It’s like being in a concentration camp. I’ve worked with animals and they’re extraordinary creatures.”

One of my personal faves of the green carpet brigade, Constance Marie, who was very pregnant and glowing, told us “It is such a wonderful step in raising our animals humanely, raising them in a more healthy way which in turn will be healthier for us.” Jennifer Coolidge and Meredith Eaton both concurred, whilst Emily Deschanel said, “It’s a no-brainer for people’s health, for the environment and for the humane treatment of these animals.”

Corey Feldman and Esai Morales were having far too much fun on the green carpet but were all business when it came to Prop 2. As Esai said, “If you’re going to eat animals, at least let them live a life.” Corey, a vegetarian for 25 years agreed, “You have to be healthier about it; organic, cage-free, there are so many ways to go. People need to be more collectively conscious of everything that’s going on.” Wendie Malick joined the party and told us that “At the very least when an animal gives up its life for you to be on your table, you don’t want to feel like you’re eating fear and suffering. It’s not a good thing to do.” And Olivia Wilde, who is credited for bringing recycling bins onto the set of House, chimed in that we need to stop industrialized farming in the US. “It’s really scary the road we’re going down, and it’s time to get back to small organic farms.”

The incredible Arianna Huffington could not believe there would even be opposition to the Act and told us that voting no doesn’t make any sense, whilst Wayne Pacelle, President of the Humane Society of the United States, was thrilled that so many wonderful people had come out in support. “Prop 2 is a measure to promote kindness to all farm animals. All animals deserve humane treatment including those raised for food. There’s just no good reason not to vote yes on Prop 2.”

So there you have it! The overwhelming consensus of the evening was that voting yes on Prop 2 is the obvious choice. For the goodness of animals, for the health of the planet, and for the health of each and every one of us. So come on all you Cali Razzis! This November, just say YES!!!

This past Saturday, Environment California held an event at the home of Paul and Deborah Haggis (80% solar-powered!) to discuss how California can lead the country in addressing global warming and jump-starting a clean energy revolution. Dana Delany, Morgan Fairchild, Peter Horton, Paul Gilmartin, Marshall Herskovitz, Sharon Lawrence, Bobby Moresco, Amy Smart and Alicia Silverstone were among the 100+ in attendance. Event sponsors sponsors and host committee included Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Redford, Lynda & Stewart Resnick, Betty & Stanley Sheinbaum, Lily Tomlin, Ed Begley Jr., Lawrence Bender, Esai Morales, Kyra Sedgwick & Kevin Bacon, and Jeremy Sisto.

Wendie Malick emcee’d the program, and speakers included U.S. Representative Jerry McNerney (11th District — a former wind-energy executive who defeated Rep. Pombo in 2006), Cal EPA’s Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols, Environment America Executive Director Margie Alt and Environment California Legislative Director Dan Jacobson. Environment California is calling on the Schwarzenegger administration to make global warming polluters pay for every ton of pollution and to create a $1-billion-a-year Global Warming Solutions Fund. Environment America, a federation of state environment groups, is working in 25+ states on similar solutions and also urging Congress to push forward on setting science-based global warming pollution standards.

In addition to contributing to the group, attendees noshed on organic brunch by Akasha Richmond of Akasha restaurant, checked out the new all-electric Tesla Roadster, signed postcards by Governor Schwarzenegger, and left with a recycled canvas Ecobag filled with more info on the organization and ways to take action.

The Hollywood Office of the HSUS celebrated its annual Genesis Awards last weekend in Beverly Hills, and a host of stars showed their support for our animal friends. The event was a gorgeous night of reverence, eco-consciousness, and in true Hollywood style, glamour! As HSUS President Wayne Pacelle reminded us, the Awards were to honor people using their talents to raise attention to animal abuse and cruelty, because without awareness, there can be no action.

Amongst the attendees was Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa who was extremely proud to be supporting the HSUS and of the fact that LA has the lowest no-kill rate in America and has just signed into law the toughest spay and neuter program in the US. Way to go, LA! Wendie Malick was her usual brilliant self and talked about living solar-powered in the country with horses, dogs and a cat, whilst still loving to get glammed up. She likes to shovel poop and then go party in the city! Constance Marie was a vision of loveliness, and is a true eco-girl (there’s nothing she doesn’t know!), animal lover, and walking example of why to go vegan.

James Cromwell, another vegan, thought we could all learn a thing or two about living and being from our animal friends, whilst Esai Morales, an environmentalist for 20 years and founding board member of ECO, barked us a message from his dog Frankie! Another celeb big on animal impressions was Hal Sparks with what he called a cross between a porpoise and a sheep! Hal and his girl are pescatarians who are building an environmentally friendly home and have banned leather from their life! Bill Maher arrived fashionably late and last, and would have loved to talk to us if not for the over-zealous pr girl pushing him up the red carpet! Other attendees were Emily Deschanel, Tony Denison, Kate Flannery, Linda Cardellini, Katie Cleary, and Elaine Hendrix. There were also young rising eco stars of the future, Nicole Lapin, Rob Stewart, and Dominic Scott Kay who are all devoting their lives and careers to making a difference. Definitely three to watch out for!

Even in the absence of Hayden Panettiere (who showed up much later after attending the Nickelodeon Awards that same evening), it was an impressive turnout with the big conversation of the night being about being vegan and taking a stand against animal cruelty, factory farming methods, and the effects of methane on the environment. And if the celebs on the red carpet were any indication, particularly the girls, being vegan is definitely the way to go!

[Editor's Note: This post comes to us from our new field reporter in LA, Anna Griffin. Anna and her cameraman Chris also shot interviews from the red carpet and we'll be getting those up shortly.]
