Unisex Fashion uses “future” fabrics instead of animals

For this company, ethical fashion is not an just an aesthetic – it’s a methodology.

Ecouterre reports that Brave GentleMan is making versatile vegan unisex fashion. The label recognizes the broad appeal of a well-tailored suit and polished oxford, and is making it so no one suffers for a sharp look. They utilize “future” fabrics and alternatives that the company’s founder, Joshua Katcher, says outperform traditional animal products.

People often ask why we’re called #BraveGentleMan.

“Futureleather” is a biodegradable, durable, and water-resistant material from Italy that is responsible for some seriously cool shoes. “They are shoemaking and sourcing experts when it comes to impeccable craftsmanship, ethical labor and vegan materials,” Katcher said of his collaborators. “So much of the ethical fashion community is about collaborating and community, and this is a great example of that.” Brave GentleMan also partners with Novacas, a cruelty-free label based in New York City and Portugal.

The line also utilizes sheep-free “Futurewool” tweeds that are made from recycled polyester and cotton fibers, and “Futuresilks” that are derived from diverted plastic bottles. Organic-cotton shirting and buttons carved from ivory-like tagua nuts finish the looks. Each elements, paired with ethical labour and gender equality, help Brave GentleMan make apparel people can feel good about wearing. “Our starting point is that good design should make you look and feel amazing,” he said. The second step is that the need for animal materials in the fashion production system is obsolete,” Katcher told Ecouterre.

More than just offerring up a new option for vegans, Brave GentleMan is proud to be a force for change. “We think our customers as citizen investors, not ‘consumers,’” Katcher said. “Because they are investing in ethical systems they want to see flourish.” A vote with your dollar is a powerful thing, made even more powerful by rocking a swanky, vegan suit. You don’t have to be brave to do that!

The outcry should go further than importation and should be directed at the fact that the animals in question were on their way to slaughter in the first place.
