Vegan Football Club wins ‘Menu of the Year’ Award
In the fall of last year, the Forest Green Rovers stunned the sports world by becoming the first ever vegan football club. After nearly a year of serving up vegan food and booze to the fans, staff, and players (maybe not the booze) they’ve received bragging rights.
According to The London Economic, The Sport and Leisure Catering Magazine Awards has given the Cotswolds’ club the ‘Menu of the Year’ award. Led by Nicolas Allan and head chef Em Franklin, this win helps confirm that making the switch has only improved things for FGR. Other teams take note – veganism isn’t only possible, it’s favourable!
In partnership with Quorn, the Forest Green Rovers now award-winning menu features veggie burgers, Mexican fajitas, sweet potato burgers, chips, pizza and their match day renowned Q-Pie, an adorable pot-pie complete with mash, gravy, and greens. The Cotswold Brewing Company is also responsible for the vegan lager and cider that has kept the bars busy.
Dale Vince, chairman of Forest Green Rovers told TLE “The best part of winning this national award is not that we’re a football club, special as that is – but that we did it with vegan food. Food that is sustainable in all senses of the word.” Sustainability is a hot word with the team, referencing other measures like solar panels, an organic pitch, and solar powered robot lawnmowers as ways they’re further lessening their impact on the planet. But it’s giving a metaphorical red card to animal exploitation that will have the most impact, especially for the animals.
